"...first-world nation with a massive army and nuclear weapons?"
North Korea
1. Nuclear Weapons, Apparently
2. Massive Admy, Definitely
3. First-World Nation... Ummmm no
Starvation, little shanty huts, intermittent power, poor sanitation, these things do not make a first world nation. Now if all it takes is a couple nuke regardless of the state of the rest of society then ok.
And the Crucial RAM is going to be better with a lifetime warantee. I expect Dell puts the cheapest crap they can find in there with a 1 year warantee standard.
Any species advanced enough to figure out that we were responsibe for deflecting a rock and to travel light years seeking retribution for our misdeeds is advanced enough to deal with said space rock before it does any harm.
Not to mention that rock is in orbit around the Sun so it is much more likly it will hit us than anyone else.
I think you are vastly overestimating our ability to have any effect the rest of the galaxy let alone our own solar system.
The artisans are left wingers like you say, but the exectutives and the people in power who make the real money RIAA, MPAA folks love whoever do their bidding, both sides to some extent but more so the Republicans.
Sounds to me like this is a scam. They are using the term "open source" and "free" to trick people into working for free when they fully intend later to close everything off and sell it as a retail release. I would recommend everyone to bail on this project.
The American Red Cross spent about 1 billion on relief for 911. 4000 people dead, but very few people displaced.
Lets see if we treat the rest of the world as well. Over 70,000 dead and over 1.5 million people displaced. If the US does not put in at least a 1 billion (including private donations) I will be very dissapinted (not that I have much faith left), but since the scale here is so much different it really should be 10 billion+.
Lets see the christian fundamentalists put their money were their mouths are, love thy neighbor. I am an athiest who makes only 30k and I gave 100$.
Such things do exist but my limited experience with them is that they are pertty sad. Japan has a whole genre of dating/romance games, I would be willing to best those have some porn elements to them.
And both are dwarfed by the porn industry. If you were to inclube porn in with movies though then well the videogame industry does not come even close. I would look up the stats on porn but I am at work and would rather not get fired today. I do recall porn being bigger than all of major league sports at the minimum.
The EOS 20D comes close, but the D70 and Digital Rebel (aka 300D IIRC), are crippled compared to a higher-end ($2000+) pro slr. The amount of shots captured per second, frame buffer, noise are far closer to that prosumer "all-in-one" solution than a Nikon D2X.
You made some ok, somewhat well informed points until you got here. You are flat out wrong.
First of all lenses cost a lot yes, but they also hold their value pretty well if you want to resell them. Lets see what your prosumer camera is worth in 2 years. Also there are off brands such as Sigma that make good lenses so you are not stuck with just Canon or Nikon if you buy one of their bodies.
The Canon 20D takes 5 frames per second for 5 seconds, it is very impressive.
The point where you are flat out wrong is with the Noise. I can speak for the Canon DR and 20D from personal experience and in comparison with prosumer cameras they are noise free. The reason I switched from my G2 to the SLRs was because of the noise issue. Check out DR review and look at the comparisons on noise at different ISOs vs prosumer cameras it is amazing.
And as for DSLRs not being there yet, they are way past "there" the Canon 1Ds is superior to 120mm medium format film, let alone the 1Ds Mark II. Face it except for some artists and a few hold outs film is dead.
I agree with the moral stance, I would do the same thing just for the independence and environment (I am a tree hugger). But if you are going to convince the world to do it (and the world if a greed driven place) then the economics of this choice has to include all costs including those that are less obvious such as opportunity cost.
6% would be no-low risk. 10% moderate-high risk.
I am not really interested in actually running the numbers I am just pointing out that their study probably did not include this as a cost.
Tinfoil hat on-- I would guess over a 20 year span there is a decent chance on a collapse of the US government (especially with GW) and a return to anarchy for a time. If such a thing happens you can be sure such a independent system would be invaluable.
Indeed this would be nice but I would like to know if this 20 year span factored in the oportunity cost. One can expect to earn 6-10% a year on investments, does his 20 year plan take that into account. If so I would think everyone would do it.
It doesn't impress people when you explain to them that the dramatic increase in cancer rates in their town isn't due to some inherent flaw in fission energy or nuclear materials handling, it's just that they've been hiring idiots lately.
I wonder if they ever consider that the reason they find more cancer around power plants, power lines, garbage dumps, cheese factories, is because they are looking harder there.
I have spent a lot of time playing the C&C series but considering all we have heard about the Evils of EA I will not buy this game and encourage the rest of you to boycott EA as well. Until EA treats their employees properly I will not buy their games.
Notice the dark smear does not go all the way to the lamp post. My theory is it is a smog trail from a plane taking off or landing from an airport just across the bay. The smoke near the light pole is from a boat at the pier warming up its engine, and the sun is reflecting off the lamp post.
It was really my 1/5 scale remote controlled F-22 testing its air to surface missiles.
I am a Linux newbie but one of the things that really impressed me was when I started up GAIM in Mandrake and it had a spell checker built in. I am a horrible/lazy speller and it is a feature I love.
I find that hard to believe. I admit that I have not used GIMP but that sounds like giving a bunch of ricers Ferraris but they decided to stick to their Civics instead. If Adobe open sourced photoshop (and they never will) GIMP would be instantly dead. I would guess the GIMP developers would love to see the PS source. Or maybe they would copy all the PS code and call it GIMP and add in some small improvements.
While I personally would love to live for 1000+ years there are some great things that normal lifespans provide for society.
Where do you think the civil rights movement if all the now if the slave owners did not die off. Or the KKK members from the early part of the century, or anyone who accept bigotry. Death provides up with a socially mobile society. Without it what the young consider progress will grind to a halt as the old keep everything the same.
What would happen when rulers never die? When someone has an iron first and complete rule over everyone at least we can currently look forward to that person's death within a reasonable amount of time. With these treatments not only will that dictator not die but will have centuries to strengthen their grasp on power.
If humanity can not get past their greed something like this will only make the divide between the haves and have nots 1000x greater than it is now.
I gave freenet a try for well over a week constantly on and in the end it was still basically useless. It was about 10x slower than a modem. It is a great idea but from my experience it just doesn't work.
I think this just goes to show what has happening to our prison system. There is all sorts of talk about reforming the criminal or deterring them from crime with harsher punishments but the reality is that neither of these is the truth.
Reform is expensive and in some cases unfair. Should a prisoner be given a chance to get a college education and thus chance at a life free of crime? If so is that fair to a person who has done nothing wrong and yet can not afford a college degree? Many prisons are for profit institutions they are not interested in reform, nor are they interested in deterring crime, both are bad for business.
Crime prevention though deterrents such ah harsh punishments does not work either. People don't do these things expecting to be caught. They don't sit there and do a cost benefit analysis of the rewards vs jail time.
The truth is that our prison system is designed to lock away the undesirables, to remove them from society. Reform is just political speak to make us all warm and fuzzy about locking up so many people.
If you are already killing babies isn't then pissing in their bathwater just a tad anti-climactic? Or perhaps you are trying to imply your piss is so toxic that after diluted in 50 litres of water a child bathing in it would still die?
Perhaps you are putting just a little too much value in TV. Even so I generally agree with your sentiment. I was also curious about the baby pissing death.

While I appreciate your link, I am not sure how many of us can actually read Icelandic (or whatever language it is).

You are just being argumentative, you know perfectly well he was referring the to USA, and to some extent all the modern nations.
Wrong.

I thought Total Annihlation was a 3D game, it may not have required a fancy videocard but I am pretty sure it was 3D.
Could be wrong.
It was still a great game, I think I have my copy still.
