How many N95's sell anyway? They cost $800 (list from Dynamism).
You'd be surprised on this point, they've been selling like hotcakes down here in Australia. Waiting lists and everything. I've got one myself, and it's an amazing little gadget, though the battery life is a bit ordinary. I'd imagine the N95's strong sales are due in no small part to the fact that the iPhone won't be making it down here for at least another year, possibly even longer.

If they're crowing about how many were shipped, they're being deliberately disingenuous, since a free Blu-Ray copy of Casino Royale is being given away to the first 500,000 people who sign up for the PS3's online service.

So they haven't sold 100,000 copies at all, they've managed to give a bunch away for free.

Air Traffic Control at Sydney Airport wouldn't let Google's plane fly over most of the areas in question, so all the people standing around their signs pretty much missed out. Link with more information is here.

For those who haven't been to Sydney, the airport is extremely close to the centre of the city and planes fly pretty close to the CBD when approaching from the north.

We have one speed zone being trialed that's 90km/hr in the wet and 100km/hr in the dry. There's a speed camera and the variable limit is posted only where the camera can nab you.
I imagine you're talking about the cameras on the F3 freeway just after the Hawkesbury River? If so, the speed limits are pretty plainly marked for several kilometres before the cameras at the top of the hill. Also, I'm fairly sure that particular camera is a distance speed check, rather than a radar check. You trigger a timer at the first camera, which then calculates your speed based on how long you take to arrive at the second camera.

Also, your point about being 1km/h over the limit is true, but not accurate. Only on a very very bad day will a police officer book you for speeding by such a small margin - you'd need to be doing something more serious for them to even worry about pulling you over. Even in the unlikely opportunity that you receive a fine, contest it in court. Their detectors aren't 100% accurate, and neither is your speedo. You can easily claim that your speedo indicated that you were doing the speed limit, and that you can't be held liable if it's inaccurate. Generally the police will tolerate a +/-10% difference from the posted limit (this is why everyone does 120km/h on the freeway).

Are marketing gurus really so stupid and vain that this would seem like a good idea?
In short, yes. I remember reading an article several years ago about the intrusion of advertising into every facet of our society. To prove a point the author asked several marketing gurus if, given the opportunity, they'd be interested in projecting a client's logo on to the Sydney Opera House. Never mind that it's a public building, national landmark, world icon etc, most of the marketing gurus said something like "yeah, it's fantastic space, of course we'd do that".

Makes me weep for the future.

(I recall seeing somebody's instructions for making Quake 3 use dual monitors for a wide-aspect game spanning both of them - but it required software rendering, which made it horribly slow.)

Really? My experience has been the opposite! Both my flatmate and I have a 23" HP widescreen monitor, so while he was out of town I hooked both monitors up to my gaming rig for some seriously widescreen action. Once both monitors were plugged in and Windows was thinking of them as a single display, every game I tried worked just fine. There's definitely something to be said for playing WoW or San Andreas at 3840x1200 resolution ;)

More and more games are coming with built-in spectator modes, so that people can connect and watch the game live without actually taking part. Counter-Strike has had this for several years now. You can have overhead views of the map, view a particular player from 1st or 3rd person perspective, overlay tactical maps, use cinematic camera angles, or just fly around with a free range camera.

I take your point about wanting to play, and I agree, but if you're a fan of a particular game, there's definitely something to be gained from watching people play with a very high skill level. Not much different to other professional sports really, almost anyone can play, but watching people who are very skilled can be just as entertaining.

I realise I'm chiming in far too late here, but the summary is wrong. According to this Gamespot article (scroll halfway down to the "update"), Gran Turismo HD Classic will feature all 750 cars and 51 tracks from previous Gran Turismo games, updated to look better in HD. The Premium version only contains 30 cars and 2 tracks, but it's content that's been designed from scratch for HD (far more polygons per model). The idea is that the Premium version focuses on online racing and downloadable content, while the Classic version is for people who just want to play Gran Turismo in HD.

Still pretty unexciting IMHO, and I have pretty strong reservations about it working. Time will tell I guess.
