When I got Comcast to install my cable I told the guy that I didn't want the software on my PC. I explained my concerns and the fact that I have had cable internet before without needing any software, he called into his tech support and told them that they would need to activate the account because he wasn't able to do it through software.
I think it makes it easier for them to activate accounts but it is by no means the only way to get set up with Comcast. I think that regular CSRs would be able do the same thing, if you are doing a self install, you just need to bitch and moan that your install CD is busted, or you don't have a CD drive to install the software, or that you absolutely refuse to install the software because it is not necessary to being online.
It takes time for either side to release a new arch. How many years was AMD smoking Intel before they came out with the Core 2 series? AMD fanboyism aside, the Core 2 is a very great platform, but you have to thank AMD for forcing Intel to step it up, otherwise we would be paying twice as much today for a chip that performs about as well as the old P3. Competition is good and I, for one, can't wait to see what AMD comes up with next.
It's not so much about saving his job, as it is about covering his own ass. It sounds like the OP has already gone to his boss and they are still insisting. At least with an email it will be in "writing" just in case they either force him or fire him.
Christopher Walken was the bomb in "Weapon of Choice".
Walk without rhythm and you won't attract the worm.
Actually, Microsoft would rather you pirate Windows than leave the fold.
Wow, not a single bug? Either your developers are total ninjas or you are spending way too much time on /.
F*cking Awesome.
gPhone is doomed? I guess it's time to buy more Google stock.
Me too, but at least you have an option. Thanks to an exclusive contract in my apartment community, my only option is Comcast.
I was having the same problem last night, no gmail, no reader, and I couldn't even run a simple Google query.
I have to agree, gaming is important. So, where the hell is Steam on Linux?
Because as we all know MMORPG stands for "Mostly Men Online Role Playing Girls".
Damn it. You beat me to "Why was the US left out" joke.
Yes, but does it run BZFlag?
fixed that for you. Meet the new AT&T, same as the old AT&T.
When are we going to get the "YOU SO STUPID!" section?
I bet he's more frightened of the command line than the legalese dialogs.
OCD == Optical Character Disorder?

FFVII was a great game, but FFVI is, hands down, the best in the series.
So the whole thing about having youTube on the iPhone is blowing smoke up our ass?
Or how about the Family Guy parody: "Pow! Right in the kisser!" "Pow! Right in the kisser!" "Pow! Right in the kisser!"
Yet another "what should their response have been" reply.
MS spokesperson: We have a workaround. Go download and install Linux today!
Yeah, just as long as Google doesn't come to your house saying; "I want my two dollars!"
