Just throwing something out there for all you scoffers. Sure you may no like the game enough to buy it. But if it does succeed, it may well gather enough of a following (on top of the already cult like following) to merit another movie, or better yet, a second season. Just something to think about before you bash the brains out of this idea.

Anyone else remember when three entire game discs were filled with storyline and had a real emotional impact on you? I'm referring mostly to games like FFVII. It seems the problem with the game designers today is that they're so stuck on graphics that they miss some of the most importent elements of a game. A storyline that moves you. Ok I'm done being sappy, but this is one thing that has been bugging me about quite a few of the "next gen" games.

  6. tips n' tricks on Advice on Running a Successful Videogame Store? · · Score: 1
    A few random ideas.

#1. Host LAN events, sponsor LAN events, or somehow get your name on the ticket on some big multiplayer party. Maybe donate some gift certificates as prizes for tourneys. Not games, gift cards. Make it so they have to go to your store to pick up their prize. Most likely player #1 will bring along some friends who will also buy games (whenever my friend drags me to the local game store I buy something anyways).

#2. Sell energy supplies. Bawls, red bull, jolt, you name it. Hardcore gamers will flock to your storefront to stock up on supplies for the next lan party. And once they're addicted to caffene they have to keep coming back to get their fix heh heh heh...

#3. Enforce parental controls. If someone wants to buy GTA, card them. This won't make you terribly popular with the younger generation, but the parents will love you and lets face it, who do you think buys all these 13 year olds doom 3? Yep, the parents. Its also good principal to have, because little kids really shouldn't be playing those games unless their parents feel they are mature enough, but thats just my 1.5 cents.

#4. Connect with gamers. I would recommend a website with an E-zine, a gaming blog, countdowns to major releases, and discussion forums with weekly prizes and discount giveaways. Games above all are about having fun. So give them the tools they need to connect with others, while at the same time promoting your store front. Let them know you are as passionate about games as they are. Those are just my ideas. Good luck with the storefront.

  12. Re:Hmmm... on Schneier: Make Banks Responsible for Phishers · · Score: 3, Insightful
    - The bank only lets you access your account from a computer you designate. This could be done through the MAC adress of your NIC, or through a hash function based on your hardware configuration. Authorizing a new computer requires a phone call to the bank from a phone number that you designate. (This phone call could be handled by an automated operator.)

The only problem I see with this is that one of the major reasons for online banking is the convenience of being able to do it anywere. Limiting it to one computer is counter productive in this right, and will discourage people from logging on in the first place, which come to think of it, will most likely do a better job then the best safeguards in the world.

Also, if a phisher has your info, whats to keep him from calling the 800 number and adding his computer to the list of allowed systems?

one thing I wouldn't mind so much is subtle ads. For example, while playing a modern day combat sim, like Americas Army, or Counter strike, you break into a room, and the room is mostly empty except for some ammo and a coke dispenser. Is it an ad? yes. Is it in your face telling you "ALL YOUR SOFT DRINK ARE BELONG TO COKE!!"? nope. In fact subtle ads like that make the game more "real". Now if you load a level and it starts spawning ads for anal lube while I'm just trying to get into a CTF server, then we have a problem. A biiiiiig problem.
