Imagine if you had to set up a interenet service that let, say impoverished afghani students (or farmers), who had access to only 1 internet enabled computer, how would you come up with a system to help them? In a country like India, there are millions of children who don't get an education, quite often because there isn't even a teacher available. Can a system be devised to enable mothers to teach their own children?

    What studies/fields would you prioritise?
Basic first aid/health ? Basic access to weather information ? Improved crop growth? How to operate a computer 101? English 101?

More importantly, WHO would you focus on? Im terrible at putting thoughts across, so bear with me-
In many 3rd world countries, education is critical to long term growth and stability.
But spending the money on text books and schools is not effective if there are not enough teachers, or if the schools are too far for students to reach.
The most useful technique though, is empowering women. A mother is more likely to spend the money she earns on her children and family. Statistically Men are more likely to spend money on themselves.
    - What, in my twisted way I'm trying to say is - maybe its not about helping people in general but just the people who want to help themselves, and have the best chance of helping people on their way.

Teamwork, Leadership (cannot overemphasize that), strategy, dedication, practice for nearly 10 hours a day, these are required in abundances to be a top player or team for Counter Strike, Starcraft and Warcraft. I Garauntee, from personal experience, that playing a team oriented video game very quickly teaches you - what else? - to play in a team. It's so effective that it has been used by corproations to teach their employees! (Sorry I don't have the link and cant be bothered to find it right now.) If you read the article, you'd know that those players definitely have what it takes when it comes to commitment. They dedicate more hours than most people could stay awake, performing an incredibly taxing task. On Getting laid, if your a top player in korea, apparently you will get laid. If your a top player almost anywhere else then yes, your going to have to either get lucky or dedicate yourself to learning how. My personal opinion is that its not the game, as much as it is the player. I learnt from video games, as that is the arena I am able to apply myself in. Yours has been physical sports. There are other people who have not learnt all the same lessons from gaming as I have. Just as everyone has not learnt the same lessons from playing sports as you have. I got a chance to lead teams because I was good enough in other peopls eyes that they may have deigned to listen to me. But after that, people would listen because I was good at knowing what to do. I would never have gotten that chance if I took up a sport. Being bigger and having more muscles counts more than being fast and agile mentally. (not that its not as important in sports)I may be a brilliant leader- but who in their right mind is going to give you a chance to prove it if you cant even throw a ball properly? Anyone who competes at a high level has to learn those things, anyone who has a chance to compete has a chance to learn them. It dosent matter whether its a physical sport, or a virtual one.

I wouldnt want a suit or government functionary deciding whether or not an intricate decision or action by a lawyer is right or not. Unions are intended to create leverage for workers who could easily be replaced and didnt have any individual power to protect their jobs. I Play WoW, and used to play War3 on a tournament level. I play GW as well. Quite frankly playing gw and war3 has improved me as a person, and taught me a LOT about winning. Simcity, strategy games, FPS, squad level games, all teach the user something. ALLways. And all these games have simple rules. Simple understandable rules. Some rules are dumb, and some have loopholes, but they have no person enforcing them. Now as a nod to everyone whos thinking, its just a game you play for fun, you learn a LOT when you play. You may not be conciously aware of it, but your brain IS adapting to the rule set. It IS evaluating its choices based on what it sees as its best options. Your brain does this all the time. WoW has a lot of dumb rules and loopholes. THE game is not consistent with itself. It gives you the promise of "world to explore" and the feeling of a free environment, but then begins to put arbitrary limits to prevent people from gaming the environment. But WORST of all, allmost EVERY quest, must see the DEATH of some creature, which will MAGICALLY spawn again. You can depopulate ENTIRE regions, and have more to kill! The solution to almost EVERY quest is "Kill 30 coyotes! 10 parakeets! On the way kill 5 lions" why? Oh i couldnt be bothere to kill 1 and get their fur or pluck their feathers. The game IS GREAT as a gambling simulator and an enhanced barbie doll dress up simulation. But man, if your kids is going to play this, hes going to have to "kill" some million creatures. Blizzard was smart enough to make the exp bar huge so even small increases in exp are visible; smart enough to break the quests down so that they become manageable. Lets save the children.

You know whats really hurting the children?
OTHER children! It's not so much as our parenting, as it is the parenting of OTHERS that is influencing our children! This is wrong!
We should be able to protect our own without having our work, our CHILDREN(!) influenced by the work of others!

Yet the problems we are facing today, the interweb, the violence TV, all of these were there in different forms before!
Yes! We are having the same problems all parents before us have had! How do I know this??
    Why its simple!
If there ever was a time when it was good to raise kids, and there werent bad people and things happening around us, well, we would have had PERFECT kids then! Then those children would have become perfect parents, raised perfect children and today we would have NO problems!

    Imagine!
World war 2 wouldn't have happened!
Everyone would be polite and well mannered!
Each and everyone of us, would be so much better than what we are now! No one would have been mean or hurt us, no children would be taken advantage of. There would be no pervs, NOTHING! Can you imagine!?

But it DIDN'T HAPPEN! That means its never been possible to do so!

We need to change this. I say we need to put controls on the internet so our children can be safe. But will that stop it?

    NO!
People will find a way around it! YES! The deviants will! WE NEED to control the deviants too! We need to find EVERYONE who has the least chance of being a deviant, ANY KIND of deviant, and ISOLATE them. Economically, emotionally, in evey which way possible! GET RID OF the deviants!

But no, this is not enough either! Some deviants will always escape!
Some may get born in further generations!

    WE NEED TO CONTROL EVERYTHING!
You cant just try controlling the internet, the point is to PROTECT our children. To keep them SAFE from harm. And hard can come in MANY forms! WE NEED TO CONTROL EVERYTHING! LETS SAVE THE CHILDREN!

    Control EVERYTHING.

WE need to make sure everyone follows the SAME path, EVERYDAY. Only state sponsored holidays on BIOLOGICALLY suitable days. WORK on those days that people are most productive, those days that you cant you can take a break! And you can go to something GOOD for you! Maybe a state sponsored gym class! Maybe the opera. AND DEFINITELY NO MORE CIGARETTE BREAKS!
Just like that, no more trouble! You go when we tell you, where we tell you and how we tell you. No more unhealthy past times. No more unhealthy food. No more rude children. WIth everyone being shining examples all our children will grow up to be well adjusted and capable of contributing to society.

Yet, even this my friends, is an utopia.
Yes, even this little dream is not to be. Because we cling too hard to moderate steps. IF we want to protect the children we must protect them from EVERYTHING. EVEN OURSELVES.

I say this is not enough. Deviants can form even in that utopia! I say we must do MORE. MUCH MUCH MORE! And today , we have the tools to do so.

Genetic engineering. WE must remove the genes for creativity and intelligence. ALL PEOPLE WITH AN IQ ABOVE 80 MUST BE REMOVED From the gene pool! That way, there will NEVER be any technological change that will allow deviants to spy and PERVERT our children!
Remove the need for dominance! Make it so that EVERYONE born LOOKS EXACTLY the same! No skin color differences, no hieght, no body shape, NOTHING. No one will EVER be insecure about their looks again!
Remove the gene for violence all together! EVERYONE WILL BE DOCILE! NO ONE WILL feel the urge to go out and hit someone ever!
But then how will we eat? WIll we be able to defend ourselves? YES! We can make robots whose ONLY duty is to kill all the predators.
KILL EVERY BEAR, TIGER, HYENA, LION! EVERY predator which may prey on us. While we are at it, lets kill ALL the mosquitos as well. matter of fact, all land insects should die. Sharks too. That way our docile herds of children will be safe.

Buying a CD is viewed as buying Music, not as buying a program, or a device to 'restrict' the usage of the data on it.

People currently believe they are buying "A song", "A book", "An album". Their buying habits reflect this reality.
The average consumer is NOT worried or aware about DRM.

They have far more pressing problems than DRM.

Consumers are not aware of the difference between a CD and a DRM enabled data storage device.
People are unaware, or confused about, the difference between the two.

Everyone is busy-with-their-life and have other things to worry about.

But people ARE bothered by being told what they can or cannot do.

People DO NOT respond well to being or feeling cheated.

If you want people to vote with their feet,
make the difference abundantly clear and direct them to/create an alternative.
