My first burned CD was from 1998 and it still passes CD check tests ive done on it. It was one of those deep dark blue verbatim datalifeplus 4X cd-rs. I cant find ones like that anymore so I always make 2 or 3 copies of a cd if its something important (backups) for redundancy.
The only problems ive ever had with data loss was when burning multiple multisessions (like 10+ sessions), it would start going crazy and files wouldn't be accessable and stuff. But if i manually extacted each session and burnt them to new cds all the data was there, so nothing was lost it was just whatever keeps track of the files for each session was screwed up.
If HD-DVD wins, you don't need buy a new player. Just play the HD-DVDs in your current DVD player. Then in 2008 when the HD-DVD players are cheap, you can buy a new HD-DVD player and you'll already have a nice collection of HD-DVDs.
Blu-Ray REQUIRES a new player, HD-DVD is backwards compatible (it contains a non-HD-DVD layer)

I have wanted a dvd burner for years but i could never decide what one to get, i wanted to get the best one for the money and i didnt want to do any detailed researching (im lazy)
So i see this article, i scroll to the conclusion part of the article. The two winners, the ND-3540A and the toshiba that isn't out yet. I do a quick search for ND-3540A, wow only $44
A few minutes later, and I just ordered my first DVD burner!
HD-DVD becomes the standard, I buy movies in HD-DVD and play them on my 1999 Toshiba DVD player until someday I decide to buy an HD-DVD player and wow all the HD-DVDs I bought are like new again because now I'll have access to the HD parts
Blu-Ray becomes the standard, I have to buy a Blu-Ray player to play anything.
HD-DVD discs will contain the HD data but they will also contain the non HD dvd which older players will still read as a normal DVD, so no one is forced to upgrade hardware. They can buy the HD-DVD discs but no new hardware is needed. But once you do decide to get new hardware, youll already have the HD-DVDs that you were buying already.
I have no plans on buying new hardware, I have a huge DVD collection and I want complete backwards compatibility dammit! (and playing my old dvds on a bluray player isnt backwards compatible, i want to continue buying movies in whatever format and not have to buy new hardware)
i agree, for non-terminal people. but if you're gonna die anyway, might as well try it.. and if it doesnt work and it kills you, at least your death helps further the research instead of just dying for no reason
This reminds me of an ice cream shop I went to once years ago when I was a child. I ordered a small ice cream sundae and my dad ordered a large. It was about a 2-3 dollar difference. When the dishes were empty, for some reason I filled my sundae dish with water to the top, then I poured it from my dish into my fathers large dish and it went right to the top. Both small and large held the same amount. It's just the large had really thick glass and the small had thinner glass, what a ripoff.
Anyway, "So, as New Year's Eve is coming, remember to use only tall glasses for your party!!!"... This year I'll be using short glasses thank you!
Even if I went up to you and shook your hand, it still doesn't mean you exist. It just means I'm crazy and I can see and touch people that aren't real.
The only way to prove you exist to me is you give me 2 side-by-side comparisons taken at 2 different times of every single particle in the whole universe, and they have to be the same. If 1 particle is slightly off, you didn't prove anything!
Your posts on slashdot support the theory that you actually exist, but it cant be proven. And since a supported theory is weak to you, I must assume you dont exist and therefore your comments aren't real and I'm not replying to anyone.
Before seeing it, I was hoping Serenity would have done better so wed get sequels or maybe even have Firefly come back to TV (although I never really beleived the latter would ever happen)
That said, after seeing Serenity, I felt it is a great ending to Firefly.
The big dark secret of the Alliance was revealed (although im sure there are others, and this finally explains the reevers), they're no longer going after Simon and River. We find out a bunch of stuff about River. River finally has a real place in the crew (as the new pilot) and it seems she is less insane now that the truth about the reevers was revealed
While I'd love to find out more about Book, it seems pretty clear he was like the assassin in the movie before he became a shephard, i still feel Serenity was a good ending and it left me satisfied.
The only part im sad about is it seems Joss had plans for 2 more and if thats true then there must have been more plot to explore but now we'll never know
Bands change over time, hell sometimes over the course of a single album. If you search by band it may find songs from bands that are totally different simply because 1 song from the band you like happens to match another from a band you hate.
But if you search for a song you like, it will find similar songs which will usually lead you to bands that you'll like.
I only search by song, I find it works great and Ive already found several new bands to try out.
i dont know about the spyware claims but i also prefer Opera (been using it as my primary browser since 6.0, and was using it as a secondary since 3.x)
As already mentioned, that seems to just be a directory of screenshots
I think what you're look is an image previwe of each window that you can switch to.. Which sounds exactly like the Alt+Tab replacement powertoy for xp (found here)
i have, but for an average user they should download the stable 1.x version for now, and thats not easy to install
and when 2.0 is released, if it still takes 6 steps to just download the installer, it's still too hard for the average user.
same thing applies to most projects at sourceforge.net, i download all the time from them so i never noticed until today when i had to help someone download PDFCreator and he got all confused because theres way too many files to choose from and steps to follow to download it.
firefox got it right with there big "Free Download" link/image that starts downloading the installer right away.
i think most of us are already using it, but the average use isn't because its too hard to download
a coworker needed an office product at home so i told her about openoffice and where to download it, she came back the next day and said she tried for like 30 minutes to find it, she downloaded something and installed something but had no idea what.
i had to write instructions for her, so i began writing a step-by-step download guide and thats when i realized, its way too hard to download openoffice for an average/newbie user
it had about 6 steps and most involved clicking on weirdly named text only links
there needs to be a giant "Download OpenOffice for Windows Now!" button on the page that links directly to the installer... oh yeah that reminds me also, whats up with the zipfile containing hundreds of files? A newbie will have no clue what file is what, and most just want to install a program not unzip it first. Programs like WinZip let you run the setup from the zip but this doesn't work with openoffice either because the openoffice setup zip contains path information and winzip cant install from a zip file if it contains path information.
They say Kubuntu is just Ubuntu with KDE but I use Ubuntu and ive used the ubuntu live cd on several pcs without any problems but if i use Kubuntu on the same pcs ill have problems (usually with it not detecting the sound card).. why not try Ubuntu?
I prefer Ubuntu anyway, Kubuntu is too ugly for me.. but if you really want KDE just install it on ubuntu

Want a crazy overclocking article? Post one from 1998

I backup my cookies weekly and I still use cookies that have a creation date of June 1997
When I moved to Opera I wrote a little program to convert my cookies to the opera cookies.dat format
I like cookies
Here's the only difference I care about:

That goes without saying. Without the Flying Spaghetti Monster, there would be no free software
blessed is his noodly appendage

Anyway, just thought i'd mention that
Which would be pointless seeing as slashdot only accepts a limited number of html tags
and then theres the fact that neither of those worked in Opera
