So explain to me how society mods responses like this to +5 Insightful when all the guy ? (who knows, he only posts as an AC anyway) spouts is swear words and bile.
Perhaps you ought to address the real issues one by one rather than venting your spleen. It would make a much more intersting comparison. MSSQL has advantages over MySQL... nobody will argue against that. The fact is that many people do NOT need advanced features. Its horses for courses.
MySQL has had transactions for some time, and will get triggers, views, etc. 5.0 already has stored procs, transactions, by default. Yes I know they've been around for some time in commercial offerrings, but the fact is that MySQL is OpenSource, written by volunteers. The support for MySQL is 10 times better than anything commercial I've seen, and its free.
There, I didn't use one swear word in that. Go on, try it
Its not the first example. I worked at UBS in London and they brought a large team of IT support people from India over to the UK to work. It turned out that after 6 months... these people were being paid half the salary, yet the responsiveness was more than twice as slow... hence they worked out that they were losing out - so they sent them back to India.
Its not a Java desktop actually... its GNOME, nothing more. But thanks anyway Sun... personally feel that KDE is far more finished and more usable and how it relates to XP is not really of interest.... its a damn site more usable for me than XP FWIW
Why not do like I do... when a telesales person calls you just put the phone on speaker with volume down and put the handset down... they can talk as much as they like, to themselves. The call is costing them money, not you. Its actually more enjoyable to leave the volume up a little, and you can hear them as they realise that you aren't listening:-)
Had things like this many years ago on SGI's. It wasn't as complez but was way down that direction and so radically different from traditional file managers that people had trouble accustoming themselves to its use, but once they did they really benefitted.
Do you mean without Java support, or without Javascript support ? Cos applets use the Java side, whereas what people call DHTML use the JavaScript part.
How the hell is "plugin technology" patentable ? Could I say that I invented Model-View-Controller and patent that ? Its a design style, nothing more. I certainly won't be changing any of my design styles to fit in with the US patent office's latest fart.
I'd agree that the distribution is the problem, yet in the UK virtually all cinemas are owned by the major hollywood labels and hence it isnt rocket science to realise what they will do in their cinemas... show their own films, regardless of whatever distribution. The only current way for a UK film to make it to the box office is to have a significantly high enough profile to get shown at a handful of cinemas.
In other European countries they have the IMHO better idea of having a law that states that a percentage of all films shown in cinemas MUST be from that country. I forget the percentage in Spain, but it is the order of 50%, and as a result the public get the opportunity to see home-grown films, and in their own language. The hollywood films still get shown, but have significantly shorter runs due to the laws. If only the UK would consider a law of this ilk
I submitted that story 2 hours earlier than the said individual and it was rejected, yet 2 hours later they accept it from someone else:-) well done Slashdot editors you really show your intelligence and consistency
Groupware... thats where they bundle so many things into a single 'app' that it takes up large chunks of your memory even if you don't really want to use half of it.
I hope they will make the 'components' available as individual apps, or are we just talking KMail, KOrganiser, etc ?
I bought an Inspiron 4100 about year and half ago... never had to click anything on my machine to agree to some license I don't agree with. Think it came in later than that... about the start of the Inspiron 5000 series.
I always have preferred KDE to Gnome for speed issues, memory usage issues, application availability issues, etc etc. The actual speed ups in Qt4 are in the article... 14% was quoted, so why say "if this new base is much faster" ?
the article actually says working with Thomson (largely French government owned)
Real contender for what exactly ? You rule things out in a way suggesting that one thing can do everything.
Java works very well on server side. It doesn't work very well client side. Its horses for courses.

Lets see if he has time to get his hair cut now the pressure on 2.4 is off

i'm glad i don't use *commercial* software
What has the article got to do with Scottish people exactly ? Jocks ?
A TV who thinks he is funny but isn't. Gets lots of time on chat shows and game shows in UK based on very limited talent (IMHO :-)
Warning : toaster1 is on fire
Did he get his surname first and forename second ?

I have a Dell Inspiron 4100 ... 1GHz. It takes less than a minute for boot to KDE logon unsing Mandrake 9.1.
... that takes about double the time to get to the point that it has stopped thrashing and is accepting input.
Windows on the same machine ?

I thought, being Slashdot, you we're going to mention that classic painting El Gran Masturbador ;-)

I knew it ! I only sent that inflatable goat and thought it would be enough

While there were indeed 3 girls there, one of them has had a bit too much to drink as you can see
here.
How exactly is that a girl ? He is called Oswald (use the mouseover to see the names). I've never met a girl called Oswald before :-)
