    It's a bug that it is being displayed. Submissions are tagged "submission". Once it is approved to become a story, that tag is changed to "story". Check out the fire hose for the various other examples of non-user created tags.

    This reminds me of the way you can combine the various elements in Dwarf Fortress to be able to perform computations. The graphics are at a wee bit of a different level, though. :D

    I interpret it to mean running software such as rkhunter and tripwire which can notify you of any modified or malicious files on your linux servers. I only run literal anti-virus software on the mail server to check incoming mail to our company because some employees(accountant/sales) use windows machines.

    That was my first thought, as well. :) I'm actually surprised they didn't name it "Windows Clouds" as a marketing reference to their default desktop background with clouds in it - and as a way to embrace and extend the cloud concept. :D

    My first thought is that it is completely incompetent system administration happening if their mail servers somehow have the ability to crash their web servers. I'm hoping this is just inaccurate reporting of the true reasons, though.

    That's why the human birth rate for males is higher than that of females. We males tend to win more darwin awards so humans evolved to make more males to even out the ratio. :)

    Uhm, what color is the sky in your world? The overwhelming majority of these famous programmers never had to ask VC people for money. Either they wrote open source code in their spare time, or they worked for a big company, or had scientific grants, or had a partner that did that type of stuff(e.g. Jobs for Woz)

    Seeing discrimination in everything is almost as silly as being discriminatory yourself.

    You have a rather bizarre definition of maladjusted. Humans banding together and disdaining those different from themselves is the natural order of things.

    Your usage of "overwhelming" is a bit peculiar as well. I can't really understand what you are trying to convey with those sentences.

    Anyway, I plan to disable the idle section in my preferences rather than come here to mock those that like the section.

    My google privacy concerns cause me to simply continue to use firefox - and delete those permanent-ish unique identifier cookies periodically if I remember. :) So a fork for privacy - motivated by making the guy some ad revenue no less - leaves me quite apathetic. :)

    I had a submission posted last week in which the editor modified the part inside the quotes after "Danny Rathjen's writes". I'm not complaining - I was actually impressed at the effort and thought the change was reasonable. I'm just pointing out that the words between the quote marks are not sacrosanct to the /. editors.

    Since I know someone will ask the details, I wrote something like, "and the jabber.org website is down" (with the url hyperlinked to the downed site) and the line was changed to, "Jabber's website doesn't mention the news yet." I agree that linking to a down site was kind of silly. :) (btw, it is still down)

    By "they", I mean the exact same guys. They first revived bacteria from a bee's stomach in 1993, and this article from 1995 mentions,

    Cano and his colleagues claim to have built up a menagerie of 1500 ancient microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and yeast, over the past three and a half years. A few weeks ago they toasted their success with beer brewed from dinosaur-age yeast, which they dubbed Jurassic Amber Ale (the first batch is described as "pretty bad", but there are hopes of better brews soon).

    So apparently the news is that it doesn't taste as bad anymore for some strange reason? marketing? ;)

    launch window=oct 1 - sep 28= 4 days
    oct 1 - sep 23 = 9 days
    28 - 23 = 5 days
    (9+5)/2 = 7 days. :)

    Just messing around, though. Obviously if I meant exactly 7 days I would have said 7 days rather than a week. There is an implied margin of error when you use larger units. :)

    The static fire took place on Saturday [20 Sep 2008, CA time], as expected, and no major issues came up. However, after a detailed analysis of data, we decided to replace a component in the 2nd stage engine LOX supply line. There is a good chance we would be ok flying as is, but we are being extremely cautious. This adds a few extra days to the schedule, so the updated launch window estimate is now Sept 28th through Oct 1st

    Based on the blog posts they don't even have a way for people to easily report gold spammers yet. That is pretty lame. It should be quite easy to add a right-click menu option for reporting/ignoring them as many other games have. That - and the in game messages spamming people to announce every time they ban a goldseller - makes it seem like a bit of a PR stunt.

    What I think would be cool is to implement a reporting system like the above and the offenders will be silenced from sending global messages after a certain number of people report them. That way you don't have to wait the several hours for the GMs allegedly dedicated to banning these folks to take action.

    backtrack - backtrack is a linux distro that comes with all the tools to do so
    pwn - slang corruption of "own" - another way of saying taking over a machine
    openmoko - is a version of linux for running on mobile phones such as...
    neo freerunner - is the name for the physical phone
    metasploit - is a software tool for scanning/running exploits
    aircrack - is a software tool for cracking wep keys and the like on wireless networks
