I think more devices like this and others are coming out of the woodwork because psychiatric organizations, big pharma and government facilitators have lost credibility. Pharmaceutical "treatments" for psychological problems have never worked as advertised, and the cat is well out-of-the-bag. The new trend is now "devices".
I think as the pharmaceutical modality continues to get exposed for the sham it is, there will be more "devices" coming down the pike. I expect they will be described as useful for some "extreme" condition such as retardation, autism etc. but then they will be shown "to have promise" for an expanding group of victims. Most "news" about psychology these days is just marketing.
The "mental health" field is a mess and many of its administrators are not to be trusted.
Keep in mind all this is in addition to what in the US we call The New Freedom Initiative" that allows for programs like Teen Screen; a so-called suicide prevention program concocted at Columbia University. To get all their federal funding schools will have to screen kids (even preteens despite the name)for suicidal tendencies via a short list of questions. Being depressed for more than 2 weeks is one sign and one of the signs of depression is not liking school (if you can imagine that).
Of course the drug companies lobbied for this, and the corrupt and psycho-politically motivated psychiatric associations are in full support. Sadly the Bush administration is also behind this and its based on a program from Texas. Of course there is little in the media about all this.
The bats are trully in the belfry and it is the inmates running the asylum and I feel bad for kids who have to grow up under this sort of crap.
Global Warming Bombshell A prime piece of evidence linking human activity to climate change turns out to be an artifact of poor mathematics.
By Richard Muller
Progress in science is sometimes made by great discoveries. But science also advances when we learn that something we believed to be true isnt. When solving a jigsaw puzzle, the solution can sometimes be stymied by the fact that a wrong piece has been wedged in a key place.
In the scientific and political debate over global warming, the latest wrong piece may be the hockey stick, the famous plot (shown below), published by University of Massachusetts geoscientist Michael Mann and colleagues. This plot purports to show that we are now experiencing the warmest climate in a millennium, and that the earth, after remaining cool for centuries during the medieval era, suddenly began to heat up about 100 years ago--just at the time that the burning of coal and oil led to an increase in atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide.
I talked about this at length in my December 2003 column. Unfortunately, discussion of this plot has been so polluted by political and activist frenzy that it is hard to dig into it to reach the science. My earlier column was largely a plea to let science proceed unmolested. Unfortunately, the very importance of the issue has made careful science difficult to pursue
But now a shock: Canadian scientists Stephen McIntyre and Ross McKitrick have uncovered a fundamental mathematical flaw in the computer program that was used to produce the hockey stick. In his original publications of the stick, Mann purported to use a standard method known as principal component analysis, or PCA, to find the dominant features in a set of more than 70 different climate records.
But it wasnt so. McIntyre and McKitrick obtained part of the program that Mann used, and they found serious problems. Not only does the program not do conventional PCA, but it handles data normalization in a way that can only be described as mistaken.
Now comes the real shocker. This improper normalization procedure tends to emphasize any data that do have the hockey stick shape, and to suppress all data that do not. To demonstrate this effect, McIntyre and McKitrick created some meaningless test data that had, on average, no trends. This method of generating random data is called Monte Carlo analysis, after the famous casino, and it is widely used in statistical analysis to test procedures. When McIntyre and McKitrick fed these random data into the Mann procedure, out popped a hockey stick shape!
That discovery hit me like a bombshell, and I suspect it is having the same effect on many others. Suddenly the hockey stick, the poster-child of the global warming community, turns out to be an artifact of poor mathematics. How could it happen? What is going on? Let me digress into a short technical discussion of how this incredible error took place.
In PCA and similar techniques, each of the (in this case, typically 70) different data sets have their averages subtracted (so they have a mean of zero), and then are multiplied by a number to make their average variation around that mean to be equal to one; in technical jargon, we say that each data set is normalized to zero mean and unit variance. In standard PCA, each data set is normalized over its complete data period; for key climate data sets that Mann used to create his hockey stick graph, this was the interval 1400-1980. But the computer program Mann used did not do that. Instead, it forced each data set to have zero mean for the time period 1902-1980, and to match the historical records for this interval. This is the time whe
Thanks that was interesting. I have two fairly new Sony DVD drives: one is a gem and the other is a dog. Only recently did I discover the dog was a re-badged Lite-On and the Gem was a re-badged BenQ. Not only is Sony a hydra but a house of mirrors as well. Sony music has been known to be sleazy since at least when Tomy Mottola ran it. I wasn't surprised at all when they did the root kit biz.
Even the enthusiasts of Kyoto describe only a temperature decline of 0.02C and 0.28C by the year 2050 - and that is optimistic. Kyoto is just boutique science. The model (hockey stick) used to justify Kyoto was proved wrong at MIT long ago. We have societies with corrupt and degenerate masses that have abandoned real character and they use stuff like kyoto to feel pseudo-virtuous about caring for things. Of course its it mostly used as justification to hate the US which people pseudo virtuous people addicted to judgement are prone too (and of course they feel sympathetic to the actual bad guys). Don't forget China, India and Australia also won't sign that rubbish. Now the Bird flu is going to kill millions and people better get focused on that and not be preoccupied with George Bush and Kyoto. The communist/liberal left has a lot of you folks conditioned to self destruct and feel heroic about it.
I don't think many people here have seen images from the new HD camcorders. There are a couple of new Sony HD camcorders for 1400 USD that make all most other non-pro camcorders look like garbage. A major shift is at hand in the camcorder market and the new drives will need to be a part of that obviously. The new images are astounding.
Indeed, talk about whiney ass bitches; they whine about crude US culture and then when someone puts their foot down they whine about that too. Truth is these sorts love crud and thats why they get offended by standards of any sort. It's like holding a mirror up to a vampire.
I wouldn't think that would be the reason since MTV and Disney have been going out of their way to pimp white girls to black guys for a long time. I could guess that the interracial bit was a major motivation for that scene though.
A leather case for 100 USD can add up to some serious profit (my Samsung mp3 player cost 88 USD). What would it cost to make and ship a zillion of those buggers? What is the return rate for failed components? I can't blame Apple even though I dont like the way media fawns over anything Apple does. I have seen Apple on major US news magazine covers twice, and cant remember seeing another makers computer on the cover of Time like I saw the iMac (the one that looked like a lamp).
There is a lot of expectation and focus on Apple now since people are waiting for the Intel iBooks and such. So Jobs and Apple ran with that. I can't blame Apple. Look at all the exposure they got when the Nanos scratched easy. Media loves to follow Jobs and Apple. I can't ever find a compelling reason to buy any of their products (they make great stuff but always come with a kick in the shins since th9ings are either too expensive or missing features) but I like their attempts at innovation.
Now CNET is a place that REALLY generates more heat than light!
Leaving AOL is like trying to get out of the mafia. Last month I called to end my 2 year old "AOL For Broadband" service. It took almost a half hour to get through the automated menus and waiting periods. Then the woman who answered my call refused to take my request to drop service at face value. I was grilled extensively about my reasons for wanting to drop the service.
King Kong with bloomers kept suggesting "alternatives" to my problems such as new browsing habits, software etc. I quite forcefully told her I didn't want "solutions" and wanted to drop the service. She then proceeded to give me instructions about some browser she said I had to download in order to drop service.
At that point I told her to drop my service "now" or I was going to contact the State Attorney Generals office. She finally ended my service then
Latter I checked up and found the New York State Attorney Generals Office had already sanctioned AOL in the recent past for just the same practices I went through.
AOL is sleazy and I wouldn't doubt they raise their prices knowing a lot of present members still can't get broadband for whatever reason. Of members who decide to drop the know they will strong-arm a certain percentage away from liberty. They have probably costed out the fines for such behavior verses the gains. No doubt they will encourage some to bump up to their broadband, and AOL-Dial will get even more ghetto-fabulous content to charm its hordes.
Areas of rising temperatures trends are real enough but much of the attention given to it is neurotic. We live in societies where moral decay and character deterioration are in morbid, accelerated states. Human nature being what it is, many people not only deny this but they champion such deterioration as "progress". In this dynamic, nagging guilts and anxieties that are suppressed get transferred and fixed to other threats real and/or imagined. People with internal threats fixate on external ones. Acute, cataclysmic global warming is an example. We are more likely on the verge of a deep chill
With regard to global warming, the "hockey stick" mathematical model used to generate the Kyoto nonsense has been proved wrong. Global warming junk science imposes prejudicial, static, data profiles on dynamic processes. One thousand year periods with notable temperature changes are flattened artificially and recent fluctuations are magnified and held up in isolation (hence the "hockey stick" graph profile).Recent changes in solar activity gets ignored by sensationalists, and data from flawed temperature collections get a pedestal.
Temperature changes are part of a dynamic process, and the extrapolations based on static "snap shots" of often flawed readings are weird. Many areas in North America and Europe are temperate because of the Gulf Streams warming effect. How many polar ice cubes need to melt before that warm water is reduced and cold temperatures increase?
Legitimate studies show that rising temperatures are often followed by cooling periods (which can appear in a very sort time). We are all probably better off getting ready for another "little ice age".
Cataclysmic "gas worries" of the Kyoto type are bizarre. Even the enthusiasts describe only a temperature decline of 0.02C and 0.28C by the year 2050 - and that is no doubt optimistic.
No doubt we have temperature rises but the emissions bit is psychotic. We have a lot of people who are polluted inside themselves but look outside. Egotistically they think they are at the center of huge, complex global functions. The alarmist junk science that permeates the media is more related to psychological dysfunction than any real global trend. The condemnatory "boutique politics" that arise from such junk studies should be isolated to the MTV/Greenday nitwits. That so many "manchurian candidates" in the higher levels of media, science and politics should compulsively conform to the same nonsense is a lot scarier than ice water.
If this upsets anyone emotionally then know that is how a person becomes in suggestible in the first place. We have real serious threats before us. Tellingly, the people most likely to rant about gasses also minimize the real threats at hand.
The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful years and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the Source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.
Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the field of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than theretofore. Population has steadily increased notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.
No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.
It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.
In testimony wherof I have herunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.
Getting a person to relax is one way to induce hypnosis. A much more effective way is to use shock. It negates any need to have a subject trust anyone. An assault victim who can't escape the flashbacks and has their whole life altered is suffering from a captive mind as a prisoner of trauma. Trauma itself is hypnotic
That wasn't a very good article actually. Top down this...flashing lights/colors that - close to the same old hypnosis as gimmick POV. Hypnosis in one form or another is at the heart of what is called "mental Illness". Even healthy people struggle with mental tapes that play over and over in the mind.
A kid getting upset after being yelled at by her parents and called "no good..lazy..a floosey etc" the parents is actually getting set up for hypnotic conditioning. Any shock suspends what hypnotists often call an individuals "critical factors" or the ability to maintain reason, focus, objectivity etc. When critical factors are suspended the door to the sub conscious is accessed and able to receive suggestions. A kid called "no good" while being stressed and upset will find those thoughts in the mind and struggling with them will make them worse since concentration is a function of hypnosis and all struggle deepend the psychic funk.
One reason people can't break habits is because they worry, struggle and analyze the problem too much. Indeed, one reason therapy often backfires is because the client is asked to get deeper into focusing on what is wrong instead of becoming objective to it. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is essentially a hypnotic problem.
People under severe stress react and the traumatic elements get inside a person's subconscious where they re-animate again and again. A persons conditioned reflex response mechanism which is like the body's memory can feel pain from an ordeal that they were not even aware of when the traumatic event was taking place. Many soldiers and others subjected to stresses that they are shocked by have a consciousness that is overwhelmed as if like a conductor falling into an orchestra.
When people dont know how to handle their emotions, or are subject to extreme stresses, they lose some conscious awareness and fall into the gears of their own cognitive and emotional machinery. That's the root for a tremendous amount of mental suffering. Not surprisingly many of the original psychic ruptures take place at home and in the schools when people are kids and get upset by the cruelties, neglects, family problems etc.
Media, marketers and politicians etc use these mechanisms (even if only indirectly aware of what principles they are using) by emotionalizing
groups of people and then giving them ideas and suggestions. WHen adds play that energizing music and give people feelings and ideas they are trying to condition them hypnotically. People will accept such motivations as if it came from them. Hypnotic elements are all around us and yet it's hardly recognized for what it is.
A lot more people can be hypnotized that that article states. One reason people can't be hypnotized is because they are hypnotized already by lifes events and stresses. The correct way to use hypnosis to get someone to stop smoking would be to "un-hypnotize" them. Thats why when a person tries hypnosis for smoke cessation it only works for a little while. Hypnotists don't hypnotize people as much as take over a pre existing state.
A fact people don't realize about hypnosis is that intellectual people and people who use their imaginations a lot are the best subjects for hypnosis. People who study a lot are used to focusing their minds and they tend to be sensitive to authority ( a good hypnotists greatest asset is a authoritarian manner) - all good conditions for hypnotic manipulation. One reason artists and such suffer is because they are very open in their own minds to all sorts of forces taking their objectivity captive.
Google has the potential to be the invasive menace everyone thought Microsoft was. People get married all the time to nice supportive people - then when the chains are on the masks come off and the liberty taking emerges. The AIDS virus builds itslef into a persons genetic material - Google seems to be headed the same way.
The thing you want to remember is that a lot of the people arguing with you want the whales to be getting threatened. It supports their need to judge something and feel superior/important/justified etc. It's a distraction from themselves really and they secretly love to get upset over stuff like this. God forbid the world was perfect.
A lot of people have grown-up resenting/hating their parents - and they themselves pretty much asked for it. Now there are millions of people with a guilt and shame based identity. These people here have indentified with some of the beauty in nature as a way to avoid seeing the ugliness in themselves. They have made "nature" and the external environment the ground of who they are.
The need to engage in psychotic struggles with safe targets to distract themslevs from seeing that they are failing as people. The rage and anger many of them felt for their parents and/or other violators could not be effectively expressed or deal with so they project it into other authority figures. Many people on the green left hate their own counties and leaders (parent stand-ins ) while being in sympathy with its enemies; they share the same seething nature.
False virtue is a plauge of the modern age, and many dysfunctional people with seething natures use high and virtuous sounding themes behind which they hide their compulisvely destructive natures. These people don't care as much about the environment as they profess. Emerson said whoever loves nature too much doesn't love it at all. These broken people are indentity compensation junkies, and behind the facade of a false love of nature is a genuine misanthropy.
The left has made a habit of promoting this sort of anger and projection crooning "there there.we love you as you are" and making these peoples fallen identities seem extra special and entitled to tear at the fabric of civilization to assuage their uncorrected guilt. So some of the levee projects in New Orleans had been put off because of "environmentalists" concerns. Now they want to blame Bush who is a stand in for the father they hated (The masculine right is often projected upon as a stand-in for fathers who the currently irrational feminine left seek to undermine with one zany emotional overture after another.)
If you ever wondered why the protestors on the left tend to be artsy-psychotic and weak/feminized it's because they usually had their identites broken by the alienation from a too weak/cruel father and then looked to get their identities from mama - who today is represented by the nanny state left and a media that seeks to make any wrong a right and any moral a vice.
We have these problems because this country has hardly any men or fathers anymore. So many guys sneak around looking for approval/sex etc. and their wives and kids hate their guts since rsenting male weakness is womans main flaw (lust being a males) . The other extreme is the cruel men who presure everyone into conformity and we see their weak, feminized kids psychotically protesting in the streets in virtual support of those who would kill them off - and they think they are heros because the media and Hollywood whack-jobs tell them they are. We are in serious poo now.

I was referring to an article I read in Technology Review - an MIT publication. It was a couple of Canadians who actually did the first work.

Global Warming Bombshell
A prime piece of evidence linking human activity to climate change turns out to be an artifact of poor mathematics.
You left out gay marriage, hip hop, ritalin and a media whose heart is in synch with Al Qaeda.
The condemnatory
"boutique politics" that arise from such junk studies should be isolated to the MTV/Greenday nitwits.
Lincoln's original 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation
[Signed]
A. Lincoln
Media, marketers and politicians etc use these mechanisms (even if only indirectly aware of what principles they are using) by emotionalizing groups of people and then giving them ideas and suggestions.
