    Install better plugins for flash/pdf/etc or just remove the bad plugins. You get the same affect in windows if you're a moron and install the old adobe 5.0 plugin that hangs. When the plugin hangs or uses a lot of cpu it affects the browser.

    If you didn't know this I guess the joke is on you. Welcome to russia.

    Yeah, just me and some of my friends that are PhDs and also game developers use Yahoo IM. What's your degree in, and who do you work for...? =)

    YIM works on the most mobile phones, and it's nice to use with giam if you also use yahoo mail. Also it's not MSN, ha! =)

    If it's a cap based switch then he has to go buy caps -- however if it's just contact/trace (or something that's not really picky about resistance) -- he'll be better off using a conductive pen to fix traces than he would soldering.

    I haven't had an IBM AT in a while -- well that's kind of a lie -- I just don't like to get them out. =)

    I have a beloved Playstation 2 USB kb, which is nearly impossible to replace now. I got coke ( very acidic ) spilled on it and lost all but a few keys.

    How do I fix it? Simple, I bought a conductive pen off amazon.com and retraced all the bad traces. You really need to clean with alcohol a lot to make sure you got all that coke off first. It also helps if you have a multimeter to figure out what needs to be retraced and save time. Everyone should have 3-4 multimeters lying around. =)

    They don't want people to be able to alter or control anything like saved games, media, etc. In fact they want you to buy a media pc to use with Xbox 360 -- runing Windows Media Center of course!

    It's just standard practice. =)

    I found writing your own game engine, your own 3d modeler, and reverse engineering ~50 AAA titles data formats opens a few doors. I still giggle when people ask me about the OpenGL renderer for Tomb Raider! ;)

    Team ninja has has people talking publicly about lack of space for their DoA games on a 'tiny DVD'. When you have major developers for your console out in public saying they might just forget developing for you console -- it's a big deal.

    The problem is many Japanese developers like having HD quality cutscenes, and they can fill a lot of DVDs.

    ( DoA is the only title that sold well on xbox in Japan. Japan is the #2 games market, so do the math. )

    You can add the HDD and ethernet expansions to any PS2. It's like requiring gnucon or a driving wheel for speciality games. It's been done since the NES. Welcome to 1985!

    You just make patches for the games to get them in trouble with the ESRB. Yeah, that makes sense. I guess if you don't like Microsoft you just write a patch to halo 2 to add a sex mini game.

    I don't know why this even makes news. Open Source office suites have been going a long time on Linux and even Windows. OS X is finally starting up some, which aren't very full featured. Seriously, if someone was doing this for some tiny OS everyone would be pissed off with pages, etc. I don't see the point.

    Wake me up when they have something like gnome office. I'd rather use something that works today and in an open environment.

    OS X is a closed system, and it's not as developer friendly as many users would have you believe. From breaking APIs to 'broken by design' macisms, you'll have as much or more to bitch about in OS X than Windows. Some examples are the co-opting of OSS projects to breaking thinks like runtime linking just to be different than other platforms. Why would you want to force all runtime linked code to remain memory resident? hello! Linux is a truely open platform, and it'll work on a lot more hardware than OS X on intel.

    However, most people just want a web browser , word processor, and media player... and there is no accounting for taste. I personally enjoy totem over the lockin with quicktime to limited formats, and the few things like fink on OS X are clumsy at best. Take for example the gcc 4.0 built libs on the last OS X release.

    Debian has had pre-releases for 4.0 for a while now. I guess you'd know that if you were a developer and actually used Debian. Hell I have mono 1.1.6 on Debian -- not many distros even have that yet. =)

    Game titles were on sell ~week or maybe *2 before PSP retail in the US. The hows and whys are about channel reasons. In short the retailers were allowed to sell games before they could sell the system.
