no kidding... any artist will tell you that they'd rather have their works appreciated and known rather than be rich. I think this is the reason Apple software is the way it is, if you want something, and it's good enough, you'll toss a few bucks to the R&D team.
so basically, having;
1) a R&D dept that's better named search and steal 2) no vision, and 3) terrible track record (outside of shitty software as well)
is there any wonder why people rip off M$ at every opportunity they get?
joe six pack thinks that their software is worth shit, so that's what he feels obligated to pay.
i used to have one, then i travelled the world for a year and during that time, i'd communicate home maybe once every couple weeks... since i've been back i just don't feel the need for instant communication anymore.
communication is a great thing, don't get me wrong... but who plans on being that important to justify being accesable 24/7 via a brain implant?
i don't have a mobile phone, and rarely is it the case that someone was trying to get ahold of me and couldn't... people can wait for me to return a message on the answering machine.
I think the source of this problem that researchers are trying to solve is the impatience that everyone seems to have nowadays...
what does having a (basically) fake boob to play with change how you look at breast cancer when what you're targeting are microscopic cells.
kinda seems like building a media player so you can learn how to code in C, sure it may work... but wouldn't you be better off getting a book to go through specific functions?
Never say never, when mainstream media has a constant flow of articles about how all your email is being read, google is profiling you... they're making deals with your employer to inform them of when you apply for a different job (that sort of stuff, you know, actually being evil), people will notice, and they will care, a lot.
2) Of those who do realise and care, most won't switch until there's a competitor that's at least as good. I've yet to see another search engine as good as google, and their other offerings tend to be top of the pile, too.
I suspect that the next "good" search engine will come from the open source community. When enough people with knowledge and capability group up against google, I'm sure they could come up with just as good or better of an alternative. Again though, they'd have to be motivated to do that to google, which will probably only happen if/when the majority of people shift from believing do no evil to don't get caught doing evil, but do it as much as possible.
Even with no lockin at all, it's very hard to take on google. The word "google" has become a verb! How's that for free advertising?
That can work both ways, some of my favorite profanities are verbs too:P
when the general opinion of people turns to "google is too powerful and potentially evil" because there is choice, people will just stop using it. There's no lock ins (besides email, but even then, there's redirection, or just telling people that your email has changed).
Microsoft however, way back in the day, when you bought a "Windows PC", you had a couple thousand dollar investment in the company, making it a sudo lock in. The comparison doesn't really apply here imho.
Yeah, his direct assistant... who reads and answers sjobs@apple.com.
This of course, in contrast to all the replies you get from bgates@microsoft.com (or whatever the hell his email is)
Sure, this seems now like a silent marketing ploy by apple, but the fact is... a desperate email sent on a hail mary to the top of the apple food chain was answered, and not for publicity (by apple at least). Go send one to bgates@microsoft.com about not being able to refuse your Vista EULA on your new dell box, wait 24 hours, then submit an article to slashdot about how they refunded your product.
What exaclly do you miss with using OO.o? I have been using Neooffice for the last year now, and OpenOffice for the year before that, and I have never ran into anything that I couldn't do. I don't get the hate against OO... is it a feature that you'd like? Maybe a certain aspect of the interface that bugs you?
Or maybe it's because it doesn't say "Microsoft" on it to match your "start menu".
I don't get it though. Why bother comparing the two? Use what works best for the job. I don't think that anyone should be using only one operating system all the time anyways.
As someone from Calgary, and who saw Telus employees on strike this morning... yes, there are alternatives. Shaw Cable and 3web do cable internet and primus offers ADSL service in direct competition with Telus. In fact, it's law.
When Telus started up and bought out AGT (Alberta Government Telephones) part of the deal was that they couldn't squash out all competition, so they have to let Primus survive. Primus undercuts everything that Telus does and essentially resells the service, but there is an option.
Of course, they will have that website blocked as well. That's why you use Shaw, or 3web (same relationship as Telus with Primus).
You use the buttons. The directional pad scrolls through letters, a selects the current letter, L inserts a space, R cycles through lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, and some special symbols like/. B works like enter.
wtf is your problem? are laws not meant to be challenged? maybe we should keep burning witches.
being law does not mean that it's moral or correct, and if you believe in something enough you should grow a backbone and defend your ethics.
to summarize a poorly written post (sorry, i'm relearning dvorak again):
generally, people will pay what a product is worth.

but, i'm way out of touch with the myspace generation...
it's much easier to blame someone/something else than take personal responsibility for your actions. Is this really a surprise to anyone?
I don't get this troll... can someone please explain it?
i think we're talking about a dupe.

and now g-mail considers opera a fully supported browser, as the automatic contacts, and all the java script funness works again!
Whoever modded that a troll doesn't understand april fools...

Where's the GNAA post?
I wonder if an IRC botnet whose purpse is to compromise more machines, and to grow the botnet counts...
