Nextel quoted me US$170 for a little bluetooth dongle that I'd probably lose any way)
There lies your problem. It looks like you are in the US. You can blame Qualcomm for the lack of Bluetooth enabled CDMA phones. They have so far refused to bring out a chipset that supports it (They may have recently announced one). If you were to go with Nokia or Sony Ericsson over GSM then you would have plenty of choices (The T610 being my favorite).
I personally use BT for syncing my phone to my mac which works perfectly. This feature alone is worth the price. I am also looking at the mac BT mouse and keyboard. great to use if you have a laptop and want to just dump your machine down and use a full size keyboard and separate mouse without any hassles of plugging in wires.

Please tell me why PocketPC's are better? I have tried so many times to use a PocketPC and every time I go back to Palm. My job is a Pre Sales technical for a PDA sync company that supports both platforms so I deal with this stuff everyday. Corporates somehow believe that PocketPC is somehow easier to manage, deploy and use than Palm. They have been sold bullshit by MS./b
I agree that there was no discussion about this but the general tone of the article seemed to imply that they are actualy looking at getting something way *better* than film overall. For once they are not going down the smaller is 'better' route (More Channels on cable instead of higher quality ones, Smaller file sizes instead of better Audio, etc).
I guess they actually realise that the movie experience is meant to blow you away with something that is larger than life....
Normally I am an analog guy (Still got my 'tables) but for this I can't wait. I think it really will be better/b
Fossil has 2 brands. The Fossil brand is more expenisve and the Abacus brand will be the cheap one (Different casing, etc). The price of the Abacus will stil be $199 though.

Try ADOdb. It is a database access library for PHP which seems to work well.
I think the reason it may be be big deal is that this is in the mainstream press. And this could show people how to write a virus...Of course anyone with half a brain already knows where to find this informaiton anyway but now it will be exposed to the general population.
I would have to agree with this statement. I am currently employeed as a pre Sales technical consultant with a mobile computing software firm. It can get quite lonely when working from home. A few things to do to make up for it:
- Have friends close by who also work from home. Regular 'Lunch Meetings' gets you out of the house. Especially today since London is in the middle of sunshine (About time right!). Also Friday 4pm is 'Beer O' Clock' with the mates to wind down from the week.
- If you are working for a US company the timezone difference can be hard. I always check my email once before going to bed at night. I usually end up spending an hour then dealing with any issues that may have otherwise wasted a day in the US. This makes me a little more relaxed when taking an extra hour in the middle of the day for lunch. I kind of feel like I haved earned it.
- Meet up with your 'workmates' at least once every 2 weeks. There are 3 of us in the UK (2 slaes guys and me). It is good to get together, bitch about the US people and let of steam. Also builds those 'water cooler' relationships you don't get being alone.
- ADSL (512K is plenty for me), WLAN and a mobile phone is all you need. I connect to our US office via VPN for access to Exchange and the network drives. Web based presentations are done via WebEx and conference calls. It works well.
- If you can get your employer to say you have to work at home you can claim tex rebates in the UK. You can claim (Number of Rooms in house/Number of rooms used for business) for Electricity, Councli tax, Heating and Rent (you cannot claim for mortgage payments).
I would have agreed with this comment until a few weeks ago until I found out.
- It is probably cheaper to go wired when you are in an apartment block or building a new housing development. - Wireless sucks when you have a lot of people on it. (Cebit this year was a mess).
Agreed, but that is not the whole story. There are other factors to take into account:
- My DAC (Digital-Audio-Converter) on my Rega Planet is far superior to what is on the iPod or just about any PC based consumer audio card. And this is not even a top of the line CD Player. Good but not the best. So even if the quality was the same on CD vs MP4 then the CD would still win out for home based 'Main room' listening.
- I wouldn't acutally rip the AAC once I had the CD as I would already have it from Apple. And it would probably be better as I hear they got a lot of theirs from master tapes.
- Emotionaly reasons. I like going to my CD rack/Records and thumbing through them to pick out something to listen to. I also (and I don't know why) like collecting pysical copies of music as opposed to digital 'transient' copies. Could be the same reason why we still buy hard cover books instead of going to the library?
Call me old fashioned but I personally like the idea of 'Albums'. With decent bands you get what the artist wanted...A collection of songs that represents an time/place/idea. As a cohesive whole it sounds better than a single and has a much better listening experience.
With that in mind I would like to be able to download whole albums off iTunes and while that is happening they ship me the pysical CD/Vinyl as well. I wouldn't even mind paying retail CD prices + Postage. This way I get a CD/Vinyl which is superior to any downloadable music format and the convienience of instant listening gratification.
Until this happens I will still buy 99% of my music from the store.

Someone should tell your boss because that is not how informed decisions are made about what software to install.
Just a note that the extra footage in LOTR is not deleted scenes. They were never meant for the theater release but are made specifically for the DVD release. Peter Jackson has been very upfront about the fact that he thinks DVD's can add an extra dimension to the film and has incorporated this concept from the beginning./b
So you are telling me you can roam the entire city of Boston without losing a connection via WiFi? Not likely.
Also I wasn't saying that there are Bluetooth hotspots, what I was saying is that you use your Bluetooth to talk with your mobile phone which in turn connects to a GPRS network. The GPRS network is far more widespread than WiFi and fills in all/most of the areas. having this access is key for a mobile worker./b
That was the first thing I noticed as well. Most of the time you won't be using WiFi. There simply are not enough Hotspots around. In the inbetween times you are likely to use GPRS. And to use that you need to connect to a phone. For that you could use IR to phone (line of site an crap) or Bluetooth to phone (Perfect).
Of course you could buy an add-in Bluetooth SD card but then that ties up your SD slot which may be needed for things like a GPS unit, which in turn may need a GPRS connection to download location based services....Catch 22. you wouldn't be able to use both at once.
Why can't they just learn to put Bluetooth into all devices? The chip costs are down to $5 and the power consumption is low. It is also ver versitile for connecting devices. It just makes sense./b
Did anyone who actually commented that this was 'just like VNC, et' actually look at the website?
This is not a remote desktop solution in the traditional sense. Applications have to be Sproqit enabled and the conent is repurposed for the mobile device. It is not simply a view of your desktop PC.
In saying this they are pretty wrong when it comes to a couple of things.
1. Syncronisation: I can spend an hour a day underground (The Tube) with no network coverage and I bet it does not cahche all the data I might want to look at. You need syncronisation as our networks are a) not good enough and b) super expensive for consitently grabbing data from your PC. They would have been better to integrate their data transfer technology and perform a really good background sync (no sync company does this yet).
2. The Enterprise: They will not take this on as it means every users PC has to be on to take advantage of this. They need a server based solution that runs on back office equipment that takes away the need for indivdual PC's to be always on.
A couple of the concepts are nice but for your core PIM applications this is not the way to go./b

Anyone interested in porting clippy to bash? ;-)
You could just order the CD online at Amazon. The CD is great.
And Slashdot has 0 submissions and 0 comments...
I went to a law 101 paper. Does that make me a lawyer to? ;-)

What he meant was that it is meant to slow down the typing of common letter combinations. 'er' and 'ty' being pretty common...
Its oneway..data to your device. Not 2 way entry. If there is 2 way entry it is just to update small things.
