I'd give it about a year or two, when the crowds of small sellers who gave eBay its start, and who have been there since the beginning (like me) start a mass exodus out, and all eBay is left with is the mass market sellers they seem to be courting, and whose stuff you can buy at WalMart for less... Guess we need to start calling them WalBay...
What annoys the crap out of me, is if I install iTunes on Windows, it just assumes I have an iPod (I DO not!) and puts an "ipod service" on, forcefeeds some b.s. "bonjour service", so I have to go in after I install it and disable these items, if I dont want them wasting my ram..
I ONLY want iTunes to buy cheap individual tracks, so I can burn them to CD and rip to MP3 for my car/pocket players.. But nooooo, it wants to take over my music collection (that I've catagorized as *I* want) and shuffle it around and screw it up, so I have to go back and fix it. Just waiting for Amazon's MP3 download service to get a bit better, and then Apple/iTunes can pound sand...
You are thinking of the Vostro line of desktops/laptops... You can get them with either XP or (shudder) Vista.. Alas, they are not one of the systems that Dell preloads Ubuntu.. I recently bought one of their Vostro 1400 laptops thru the Dell Outlet, for $623 out the door ($549+$20ship+$44tax), and its a great machine.. Core2Duo/T5270,2GB,160GB/NvidiaGF8400M video/webcam/Wifi/Bluetooth...A quick PartitionMagic resize of the drive, and its now dualbooted with XP and Ubuntu 7.10...
This is a good example of the b.s. that caused me, a lifetime Californian, to pack up in 1996 and move to Nevada. Now I really see why so many people call California, The People's Republic Of Kalifornia.......
I wonder.... Either her lawyer was grossly incompetent, or.... was a plant by the MAFIAA?? I'd love to know if she selected this idiot out of a phonebook OR more likely, was referred to him by someone?.... I'm not big on the wearing of tinfoil hats, but think about it.. Get the defendant to sign up with a lawyer who supposedly knew something about "IP" law, but was a deep plant by the RIAA. So during the trial, the guy misses certain VERY exculpatory evidence (such as the possible fact.. that the defendant swapped harddrives LONG before she was notified of the suit).. Thus getting RIAA a big win.. I don't buy CDs, other than used, and only use iTunes for the VERY few good songs that I like on the market today, but these RIAA/MPAA goons are so far out of control its just not funny......
My local library district, which has free wifi at all the branches, blocks VPN, or at least PPTP, as thats what the only VPNs I use.. I can connect find everywhere else I go, but not there... VERY inconvienient...
When I still ran Winblowz on my laptop, I relied on hibernating it when I was finished with it for awhile, but now that I've switched to Ubuntu, I don't even bother standby or hiberation, as the darn thing boots so fast, about 1/2 the time Windows on the laptop took to come out of hibernation... Essentially about 45 seconds from a power-on.. course I've tweaked the startup a bit, shut off unneeded startup services, etc... Long live Ubuntu!!!
> If you're leaving these days it's not uncommon to get escorted to the door... and it's not > uncommon to be a perp walk, which sucks. It undermines the fabric of trust in the workforce > generally and damages individual psyche specifically.
What IS this "fabric of trust in the workforce" of which you speak?? I think thats been gone for MANY years..
Silly Question:
Assuming you worked at MS, and got a great offer from Google, why in the world would you tell MS HR/Mgmt *where* you were going? I've changed jobs a bit in the last few years, and I've never told my losing company where I was going.. There's no legal or moral requirement to do so, since its between you and the new company... at least thats how I see it...
Things that are big and vicious, like RIAA/MPAA/CRIA, tend to die slowly, flayling around, trying everything they can to prevent the inevitable, and there can be a lot of collateral damage before they finally breathe their last.. We should be careful...
Doesn't Darryl (This is my brother Darryl *and* this is my OTHER brother Darryl) remind you of
"Bagdad Bob", the ex-Iraqi communications minister? If Darryl ever got smacked with a clue-stick, he'd bust the clue-stick... All I can say is "ABOUT TIME THIS HAPPENED!"... Next up, Darryl McBride is arrested and introduced to his new "husband" in PMITA prison....
I'm into NewAge music, such as Vangelis, Enya, David/Diane Arkenstone, etc. and I've NEVER heard a radio-frequency-based station that played these and other artists, thus I find that the http://www.sky.fm/ NewAge channel to be right up my alley.. As for finding new artists in a given music genre, I couldn't say how many previously-unknown-to-me artists I've heard on that station that become instant favorites with me... For those not familiar with Sky.fm, they have "stations" for just about every music genre you can think of.. Their 24K shoutcast streams are free, and have premium accounts that are "CD Quality". Since I have the newage station on just about all the time when I'm working at the computer, I dread the thought of losing this excellent resource..
Oh well, nowadays, its all about greed and control...
I'm a computer support tech and have spent countless hours removing your ad/spyware from my clients machines, and I'd like to congratulate you on losing your lawsuit against Kaspersky Labs. May I suggest that you counsel your legal staff to let this drop, rather than wasting more of your money to appeal it. Since I use Kaspersky Labs products, and do not use yours, I'm glad a judge saw thru your arguments, and found in Kaspersky's favor. I'll now be able to continue to help my clients computers run significantly faster without your ad/spyware on their systems. And, by the way, since your legal staff seems to enjoy filing lawsuits, and should they decide to attempt to sue me, please remind them that I only remove your material AT THE REQUEST OF MY CLIENT...
Heck. You don't have to go Canada to get a nice cheap HP Laserjet laser printer for under $100 US either.. I recently bought an HP LJ1018 at Fry's for $99.00... The only annoying feature about it is that its a WinPrinter (image rendering engine in Windows driver vs in h/w on printer), so its not gonna work in Linux.. To get around that, I just share it on one of my Windows boxes, and use samba to connect to it from Linux.. I too, gave up the Inkjet rat-race.. Had a Canon S520 and when it died, I realized I hadnt printed any color in so long, and decided to go with a b/w Laser printer, and the odd color print farmed out to Walmart's online photo processing...
Why does everybody keep touting that damned Intuit product that had so many issues a few years ago?? If your confession... err return is relatively simple, Taxact, from 2nd Story Software (www.taxact.com) is fantastic, and guess what? its free.. either online via webbrowser or a download. Whats even more unbelievable is that it includes free e-file.. I've used it for the last 5 years and swear by it.. And no, I don't work for 'em..
>Try and get the Democratic party to stop emailing you!
Or the Republican party for that matter... I *had* been a lifelong
registered Republican, but with the current Rep administration,
I just got fed up, and switched to Independent.. Damned RNC
keeps calling/emailing me for $$$. The last two callers I told
to take me off their calling list... Let you know how that goes... sigh!
I'm sure glad I read this article... I signed up a couple of years ago with one of the Classmates freebie
accounts, and have periodically gotten notifications that others of my high school/college classmates had signed up. However the other day, I got one of these notifications and just for fun, I logged into the service and --be still my beating heart-- it listed of my old girlfriends from highschool, that I'd gone
steady with for a while, but had lost touch with (after all highschool was 38 years ago).. She was one of the great ones.... (tho she's prbly divorced, 10 kids, and weighs 400lbs today..).. Anyway I tried to email back, but of course, thats how Classmates makes its $$$.. I debated upon signing up for a paid account, then canceling after I contacted her... After reading this, I think I'll pass... Once again, Slashdot proves its worth.....
Here's another idea: You may want to put on your stylish tinfoil hat beforehand... We've all heard of things that can be put into the blood stream that can cause the heart to stop, and are virtually undetectable... With who-knows-how-many people he screwed into the ground, what if one or more of them got together and arranged this for him??? I wonder just how hard the coroner is gonna check on the cause of death on a convicted felon??? Oh well.. Tinfoil hats off now!!
If the black-robed idiots allowed the McCain-Feingold bill limiting polical speech during the
60 days before an election, this is right up the same alley.. I sure wish -somebody- would
teach these idiotic congress-critters how the Internet works.. The only websites it can possibly affect are ones that are hosted IN Washington state.... I'd LOVE to see em -try- to arrest someone for putting up links to online gambling on a server, located, say here in Nevada...
I'm gonna get a real kick out of seeing them -try- to go after a website with this "illegal"
material that is not hosted in Washington state. God help the poor schlubs who live in that
idiotic state. I passed thru Seattle/Tacoma last in 1971, and haven't been back since, and with this idiotic law, I don't plan to, ever again.... Big Brother is alive and well in Washington state.
I'm visiting the inlaws, who don't even have a computer (though they ARE getting one for Christmas...), so I'm essentially broadband-less..
Not even any open access points in range of the house.. Grrr... So I'm reduced to taking the laptop to a PaneraBread for a wifi fix.... What was the question?? Yes! I AM ADDICTED!!!!
