  6. Re:Blahcasting on Indie Podcasters vs. Big Radio · · Score: 1

Podcasting is a little different to just putting an audio file on-line. As with so many things, they aren't really used until they become automated. With the podcasts being downloaded and synced to your player automatically they suddenly take on a new usefulness. Instead of trawling through websites when I get up in the morning looking for files to download and then sync over, it happens during the night, or while I am cleaning my teeth etc. I grab the player and leave for work. As far as using a streaming service is concerned, this misses the point by a mile. In the same way that TiVO lets you watch what you want, when you want, podcasts allow you to listen any time. Most people don't want to be tied to their pc while the listen, they want to listen in the car/on the train on the way to work. They want to stop the program when they get there and carry on when they leave. Streaming cannot offer this. And for gods sake people, stop whining about the name. There are more important things to spend your time and energy being concerned about!

  7. Re:False Logic on Indie Podcasters vs. Big Radio · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually the logic is far more false. The itunes rating shows *new* subscriptions, not ongoing ones. So any show that gains a following will peak and then drop down the ratings. The only problem I have with solutions like this (and the headsets) is that unless you have 2 sound cards you are limiting yourself to only being able to hear the PC sound if you pick the phone up! USB solutions which count as an additional sound card allow you to direct VOIP (say Skype) to the phone and all other sound to the sound card. Skype also allows you to have the ringer run on the speakers and the phone, incase the ringer on the USB phone isn't loud enough. I have one of those orange Skype phones and apart from the awful ringer it is superb - excellent sound quality

a bit-torrent solution would be fine, but it needs to be an integrated solution to give the podcasters mass market access. If iTunes could automatically accept, process and download podcasts from a torrent without the user having to intervene at any point we would definately have a winner on our hands. And, perhaps, sufficient legitimate use (properly marketed, of course) to keep the RIAA from being able to sue bit-torrents creators for supporting piracy!

  13. iTunes update designed to kill off podcasting! on Apple Replaces B/W White iPods with Color Screens · · Score: 1

More interesting is apples bid to end this non-corporate podcasting craze. By updating the iTunes store and software yesterday to promote and supply podcasts they have effectively brought the craze to an end. See how no non-commerical podcasts can survive the battering that millions of curious users have unleased upon them. More impressive even than a slashdotting!

Seriously though, this has rendered my favourite podcasts, with the exception of the BBC's Today programme and From Our Own Correspondant, completely inaccessable :( I pity the people covering those bandwidth costs. The sooner a peer-peer solution for podcasting is found the better.

  14. Re:Why even buy CD's? on Sony's New Nagging Copy Protection · · Score: 1

Well, the main points (and the reasons that I refuse to buy from iTunes or any similar store) are:

    1) Far inferior quality to a CD. I'll take my music in the least compressed form I can, thankyou.

    2) DRM. I'll use my music in any device I damn well want to. I know I can burn CD's from iTunes but recomressing into a different format (if, for instance, I decide to switch from an apple player to a WMA one) lowers the quality even more.

I don't live in the USA! Over here in conservative Blighty I've never been turned down for a job because I have long hair (I'm early 30's and part of a team responsible for testing the software behind the largest retail network in Europe). I have one visible (ear) and one non-visible piercing. I have no tat's because I have never been able to suitably draw the image I would like to have and as it's an expression of me and not a fashion statement that is very important. It worries me that people are so insecure in themselves that they find an individual who choses to change their appearance threatening. In the end, no matter what these people say about it being offensive or improper it boils down to the fact that they feel threatened. Their feel that their way of existance is threatend by people who do something that they do not. It is the same for those who oppose gay marriage or civil union. The fear that somehow what someone else choses to do affects and diminishes what they chose to do. We live in a world driven by fear and mistrust rather than compassion, love and understanding and sadly those who promote fear and hate are those who claim to have follow the teachings of someone who promoted the very opposite.

Or perhaps you'll get your user-name and password as part of your TV licence... C'mon, think a little! What I am hoping is that they don't limit this to UK IP addresses - I travel a lot and the ability to keep up with BBC programming (especially the news) will be very valuable to me.

To those that see this as a tivo-lite system, remember that this won't require you to buy anything new, assuming you have suitable hardware at home. You won't need to pay any subscription above the tv-licence fee. The 7-day limitiation seems to be pretty much in line with what you are 'supposed' to do with VHS recordings. Also remember that if it is a TV series you want and it is produced by the Beeb, it is normally out on DVD within weeks or months (the start of the new series of Doctor Who is already available)

Streamlining and further validating the process will save money, lives, and time. The downside would be... let's see, a situation where it's harder for liars to get mainstream IDs?"

    Perhaps you missed this part...

"no court shall have jurisdiction to hear any cause or claim arising from any action undertaken, or any decision made, by the Secretary of Homeland Security, or order compensatory, declaratory, injunctive, equitable, or any other relief for damage alleged to arise from any such action or decision"

What we have here is a system where, when a mistake is made, NO ONE is held accountable. No court in the land can hear a complaint. No court. At all. You have lost your legal rights. You are arrested because of a mistake on the system. You have no recourse to the courts to have the mistake rectified. 5 years down the line, when they decide that you aren't a risk you have no recourse for compensation. Tough luck. But hey, don't feel bad. I mean, your life has been ruined but thats a small price to pay for the freedoms you now enjoy. The freedom from Terror! Yes kids, there is now less Terror in the world because people can't protest through the courts when their government shafts them.
