HD at full res (1080) is far from film quality. The closest I've seen is 4k resolution. And that's not coming to your home anytime soon.
And if I'm not mistaken, the Lucas films you mention were NOT shot on 1080 res. I believe it was actually a 4k camera. If I were to show you a 1080p projection and a 4k projection, trust me, you'd see a difference.
It should be noted, though, that 1080 is great for home use. Once you get to projections, though, that's where 4k shines. (That and doing any DI/effect work.)
I completely agree that the general public (the/. crowd included) doesn't have much of an idea about climatology, and most of what we hear and "know" about global warming comes from the media.
However, even if global warming isn't as drastic as it is portrayed to be, that doesn't mean we shouldn't continue to search and convert to alternate forms of energy. Reduced emissions and dependancy on non-renewable energy is still a good thing. (Notice I said reduced dependancy and not independancy. Chances are, we'll still need some of the good old fashioned stuff for a long while to come.)
I like how they simplify the whole process on the new cast.... How many parents watching that are now going to think "Gee... I wonder if little Johnny/Jane are crashing websites? I better remove that F5 key before they get thrown in jail."
*sigh*..... yay for local news. They're the reason I transfered from a communications program at one school to a film program at another school.
While I would love to see songs cheaper than $.99, you have to realize that there's a difference between real value and perceived value. $.99 is just about the highest price they can charge while still having people believe that's what the songs are worth.
I'm sure it costs less than they make to distribute those songs. But to many people, that song is worth $.99, so they will pay it. If they don't believe it's worth that much, they don't buy it.
I don't know about you, but to me, having even 1% of the sold consoles experiencing problem as trivial as PSU overheating, makes the console not well designed and performing well.
Just so you know, the article was posted on Nov 13, 2005, well before the XBox 360 release.
Now, I'm sitting here on a 1GHz PowerBook. I'm well aware that sometimes the proc can get a bit crazy. but I have a CPU monitor running and moving the mouse only causes the proc to jump about 10% higher, mousing over the Dock only causes a 5% jump over the mouse movement.
Bottom line: flash implementation on a Mac is poor. The new v8 of flash is better, but still lacking. So yes, it is flash that's eating up his proc.
I haven't been following Vista too closely, but I don't recall anything about monitors not working with Vista. Are you referring to the same thing that this ars technica article (new window) is discussing? In that case it's not that the monitors won't work with Vista at all, it's that they can't display legally obtained HD content in full HD on present displays. However, if I'm understanding this right, it looks like it will only to be crippled over a digital pipeline like DVI. But that's beside the point.
Unless I'm mistaken (and feel free to show me evidence that I am) your present display will work with Vista... but just might not show HD content in full HD.
Hate to break it to you, but 64MB translates to 512Mb.... 8 bits in 1 byte... But then that's assuming that the spec sheet is using proper multipliers (1024^2, not 1000^2) for the M prefix.
Thanks to a smooth top shell with touch-sensitive technology beneath, Mighty Mouse allows you to right click without a right button.
Many times, RTFA-ing might mean clicking beyond the first page.
I don't know about this though... I'm not to keen on having a touch sensitive button, but I'll hold off judgement until I can get my hands on one in an Apple store.
Living in the US, I'm always amazed at ratings like this.....
*Before I continue, yes I understand that basically the M rating is a suggestion while the AO rating is more of a rule not to sell to minors*
We all know what the game involves... and apparently that's suitable if you're seventeen. But because there's a hidden minigame requiring a mod to unlock it that has explicit cartoon sex, it's no longer suitable for 17-year olds... not you have to wait a year before you understand that cartoon sex.
I never quite understood that... just like I can walk into a car rental place at 24 and 11 months old and not be able to rent a car.... one month later, I'm considered old and wise enough to rent one. I know there has to be a limit at one point.... but not much happens between 17 and 18 (other than "officially" being considered an adult) that seems to warrant two different ratings.
Incidentally, I'd also like to point out that NC17 rating for movies used to be X..... hmmm... so you can watch real people pretending to have sex on film at 17, but you're really not ready to watch polygons poorly representing people on your TV having sex...
*didn't rtfa, hasn't played GTA (no interest), sick of the hype over this issue prevading over real issues in current events*
I beg to differ that this is not practical. This would be especially useful to video editors or anyone in media that uses a shit-ton of keyboard hotkeys/shortcuts.
Take video for example... Avid and FCP keyboards are all over the place. Imagine having a kayboard like this which avid or fcp could send the user's keyboard layout to, and presto! Instant, accurate representation of all the keyboard short-cuts. This is far better than buying a pre-manufactured keyboard that has the shortcuts printed on the keys... especially if you change the layout (as many do on avid and fcp and many other programs).
I'd doubt that they'll license their os. If you recall, in the mid-90's they tried that with the "clones". Steve pulled the plug as soon as he became the reborn CEO.
"Creating game software in high definition will require everything from the [graphic's] models to the background to be redone, and it will bloat up development costs. And yet, it has no use for people that aren't playing with a high-definition TV set." -Satoru Iwata
Now, I'm a nintendo kid (at 23), but am I understanding this right? Is the Revolution not going to be High Definition? Granted I don't have a high def TV, but with HD DVD formats starting to emerge and more HD programming available, more and more people will start buring high def tvs (and consequently lower the cost and get more people to buy sets). I think they would be comitting suicide if they didn't have HD capabilities... hell, even 720p would be fine! Just don't kill yourself Nintendo!
In Japan, DVDs never cought on because the players were too expensive (like you said above)... People were still buying VCD (a concept north america never cought on to) and VHS.
Once the PS2 came out, it was a two-for-one... new gaming concol and video player priced well below the other DVD players. DVD sales shot up significantly.
I've been a nintendo fan from the start with NES. Yes they lost a lot of the market when sony entered the game and gave them real competition, but they've consistantly showed inovation in the gaming industry
From what I've seen from the Sony footage, it looks absolutely amazing, and I'm sure the XBox360 will be great, too.... but I have a Tivo, I have my computer for browsing the internet... I want a game system (don't even get me started on XBox360's connectivity to the MediaCenterPC.... does anyone even own one?). I want new games. I don't want more FPS games. I want new genres... something different. I have faith that Nintendo will provide that something different. The DS (though akward and lacking) shows that they're not really afraid to try something new.
So, while Nintendo's press conference may have been underwhelming, I'm still excited for the Revolution.
Just to clarify, it's very easy to transfer iTunes DRM'd music from computer to computer. It's just a matter of "authorizing" it by entering the purchaser's e-mail and password. I never had a problem.

While I fully agree about Blu-Ray and HDCP, it was my understanding that HD-DVD will also make use of HDCP (under 'Uses').
Of course, I was also under the impression that not necessarily all HD discs will make use of this protection.
Has someone here read Real Ultimate Power: The Official Ninja Book by Robert Hamburger?

I'm not saying I'm taking this as FACT. Just pointing out that the headline is not inaccurate, as cttforsale was suggesting.
How about third party titles that haven't been released on the GameCube yet?
And did you read the article that was linked to in this article? (the one on thehylia.com? I believe that explicitly said "die."
Just so you know, the article was posted on Nov 13, 2005, well before the XBox 360 release.

Those would be TPS reports... And I hear you're having problems with those. Didn't you get the memo?

Mario was birthed from the original coin-op of Donkey Kong back in 1981.

You can include high definition capability and still maintain compatibility with standard definition monitors.
Now, I'm a nintendo kid (at 23), but am I understanding this right? Is the Revolution not going to be High Definition?
