  1. Re:Extensions on Windows 7 Users Warned Over Filename Security Risk · · Score: 1

It's trivial for the writer of the "application" to include the legitimite Word document file icon as part of the .exe. Heck, at that point, calling it Partyinvite.exe would be enough to fool most people who have the extensions hidden, because they wouldn't be used to seeing .doc at the end of the name.

The only example I've seen on this thread were the change in daylight savings time. Can someone give me a few other examples from the last year or so of XP updates that we wouldn't be able to get today?

  6. Re:GBA slot will be missed. on New Nintendo DSi Announced · · Score: 1

There are actually two reasons to keep a GBC instead of/in addition to an SP. The first, is the infared wireless port on the GBC. It was used in a few games (Pokemon mostly) for various quick multiplayer/data transfer bits. The second, is the game Kirby's Tilt and Tumble, which had a motion sensor in the cartridge to detect the tilting of the system. The cartridge slot points towards the bottom on the GBA SP instead of the top, so all of the tilting would be read the opposite of normal. You could play it on an original GBA though.

  7. Subtle on New Nintendo DSi Announced · · Score: 1

Games announced "for the DSi"... does this mean that DS and DS Lite will not play Mario and Luigi 3 or the new Trace Memory? Is this actually a new generation instead of an upgrade? If it's an upgrade, I'll probably pass, but if this is actually the new generation, and is required to play future games, then they probably have a sale, sad to say.

You're acting as if the judges made this decision from a pro-spam position. It's not. They are technically correct that the law is too broad, and covers certain things that shouldn't be illegal. It's a shame that it means that spam runs free (In VA) for the time being though. I wonder if because of this law being struck down, that if Virginia creates a more specific law to replace it, if it will be able to exist retroactively to the date the original law was passed...

But basically, the project is more or less doing that, actually using a subset of numbers where the exponent is a known prime. Those numbers were chosen particularly because they're easy to test. That being said, it still takes an average desktop about a month of constant computation to determine if a number that size is prime or not. So anything you can do to narrow down your search is a good thing.

  10. Re:Just what we need, more laws on Video Game Labeling Law Passed In New York · · Score: 1

Technically they aren't mandatory, but in order to be certified to run on the major platforms (Wii, 360 and PS3), the games need to be ESRB rated, and can not be rated AO. Only PC games can actually be published without being rated, and in most of these cases, stores will not carry games that don't have an ESRB rating on them.

Yes, you are paying one half the cost of the call. The cost your carrier bears. You aren't necessarily on the same carrier as the person who you are speaking with, and in such a case, each carrier gets their piece of the pie. That's why a lot of carriers provide discounts when you call people on the same carrier (well, that and it gives them cheap word of mouth advertising, but that's neither here nor there)

The lag on my LCD TV is quite noticable playing non-progressive scan PS2 games on a real PS2, and maybe playing them on a PS3 in my TV's native resolution would allieve that somewhat, so yes, I want backwards compatibility in my PS3 when I eventually get one. Still waiting on some games to make me make the jump though. Eye of Judgment looks interesting, so that makes 1, but I usually like to have 3 games to buy right away before I invest in a system.
