Just because a player plays the 'standard' formats does not make it superior. Look at iPodLinux... it has an ogg player. The only reason most standalone mp3 players don't have ogg support is because the developers wrongly think that it's a completely marginal format, which is becoming increasingly untrue.
If ONE developer would include ogg support, then it would become even more popular and accepted.
And the only reason most people still use mp3 is because, unlike mp3 (which is proprietary), ogg is open-source. Microsoft seems to go out of their way to exclude open-source.
Yeah, installing gentoo is a major pain. It took me a day and a half to get to a desktop. But once you can get to the desktop, and open a Konsole window (or whatever you want) you can minimize and move on. And this doesn't have near the problems other distributions have (fedora, debian, kubuntu)
If the kid is gonna pay for a reasonable portion of it, then yeah, it's fine. But if they just want a computer that they can do homework and stuff on, and won't pay for a reasonable part of the extra cost, then they should get a desktop.
Let's see... the last time my computer froze up since i've had linux on it was... never. My parents' computer has to be rebooted every day (at least, if not more) because the memory leaks and just general bugginess of the operating system (Windows XP). I don't know about mac os x but chances are it's better than windows.
I think what they mean is that instead of the processor being on a single plane (a silicon wafer) it's on 2 or more wafers (stacked on top of each other or somesuch)
Yeah. For example, my mom (who is somewhere between intermediate and beginner) now wants to learn about linux. At first it was "But... windows is so much easier to use" but now that she's seen some of the nicer features on my computer (excluding the ones granted me by the hardware gods) she is actually fairly interested in it. Only reason they haven't switched is because they need the map/trip programs.
yeah.
Many people, if they got a computer with ubuntu on it, would get it very quickly. For the average old lady, linux (if it came preconfigured for e-mail and websurfing using whatever) would be a perfectly viable solution, if it had the right software, most of which is included in ubuntu.
Instead of having 17k different distributions, all based off the same base (Debian ->Ubuntu for example) just have the bases and then development and then there's a subsect of that in there.
Read the above. The 'included' firewall sucks ass. It's evil. Microsoft, if they MUST exist, should stick operating systems only and not make sub-par firewalls.
"What's the harm?" you ask. Well, if a user knows that they should have a firewall, they'll see the included one and not give it a second thought. This firewall is crap, and easily done away with. It gives the user a false sense of security.
It's like 3-d kinda... but not >.> but definitely VERY cool
this could be used in the future in some great ways. Say, I'm on the internet; my parents want to watch a dvd... so they sit on one side and watch the movie... I can still surf (in a one computer family, which mine is not; we have 6 computers between 3 me and my parents; I own 5 of them)
I haven't used a floppy in three years... So this really isn't a surprise. And as my school gradually got rid of the decent computers and replaced them with 'thin clients' without drives, it quickly is apparent that the floppy age is gone.
The wayback, if I'm not mistaken, only stores PUBLIC PAGES. It wasn't 'illegal' for them to have them. It's used as a public service and a very cool project. These people are merely upset because something was found that they didn't WANT to be found, but it's their fault; they shouldn't have put it on a public page.
1) the INSURANCE INDUSTRY so... that's why insurance is to expensive!
2) the end of the article reminds of google's 20% thing.
3) no duh, the time has increased.
Go tell somebody you know that you are a hacker (most of us are in the old sense of the word). They'll just look at you like 'Get the hell away from me you fuckin' thief/rapist/murderer.
apparently, this book, (should i ever come across it)(I have TERRIBLE trouble finding books; when I'm actually looking for them, I can't find them; the MINUTE i stop looking, I find in some weird section of the bookstore) would be a good thing to read if I was planning to get in programming on linux. But, I rather like python and am fairly proficient at it. But I might pick this up, just to see if it has any relevant information.
If you look at most mp3 players, they have wma support too

Well, they could always do /. by hand... that would kinda fun actually
There are hacker tools that are used to automate the process.
And then you'll keep hearing about how it safely returned/blew up in mid-air. So, either way, it's gonna go on for a long time.
I woke up at 4 in the morning to watch this...
Well, let's just hope nothing goes wrong with this.
I really wanted to see it land...
Does this movie have tux in it? If so, i might go see it.

Do what any responsible person would do. Zero the hard drive ELEVEN TIMES. That's what me and my friends do.

My name's tug; can I call the ship mini-me? And... what would this be used for, exactly
So, the one who said it was good now sees it through the same light as the rest of us.

Please check the box if you care if you care what it looks like.
