But surely can simply take it out of 4WD into 2WD for hard surface driving. Also what on earth is the engine capacity on that beast.

This is achived by geting the most out of the engine hence the reason most cars on the road you see in the UK average at the 1.8l-2.2l size(sure we have some SUV's and performance cars with more, 4.2+??? why man why?).

Maybe but I think speeding is an overated crime. Granted in urban area/near schools the speed limmit should be followed but on Motorways/Freeways it is very different.

In the UK the limmit on dual carrageways and motorways is 70mph; a large percentage of people reguarly exceed this limmit with out causing any harm (upto a limmit of say 90) and road stats claim that less than 7% of accidents rate excessive speed as the cause of the accident. If we want safer roads then teaching people:
    1) How to drive safely (leaving space all round the car, aka the cell technique)
    2) Educating the dangers of fatigue
    3) getting old people doing 60 in the fast lane off the god damn road.

What ever happened to nuclear batteries that used Strongtium 90 decay (Alpha) to generate power.

Last I heard they were being tested in some millitary laptops and could run full tilt for around 2 years befor they need replacement, with a life span like that they could charge quite abit for a 9V battery and would be quite re-cylcable as only the radioactive isotope would need replacing to re-activate them. As I recall the only issue was that no matter how much or little they were used they would only last aslong as the isotope did so they would neot be of anyuse in TV remotes but then they are really aimed at hi-ampage apps.

On a safty note alpha radiation can be effectivelty blocked by paper so a thin steal/aluminium case wouldd provide sufficient protection and the quantity of radioactive material is not enough to cause an insident.
