  1. Lightning is no joke on Mobile Phones and Lightning a Lethal Mix · · Score: 1

Once I locked myself outside in the middle of a lighting storm. Fortunately I had my wits about me so I grabbed a big piece of sheet metal and sheltered under the biggest tree I could find. In retrospect it was a good thing I had the metal as the tree was hit and a whole branch fell off. Something told me this was a special piece of wood, wood I could make a base ball bat out of.. Well long story short I called it wonderbat and used it to help my company baseball team win!

It would seem it was only the areosole that caused the re-action, my guess is that when spreyed via an areosole more of the nano-particles endup in the atmosphere in the cloud of atomised solution, where as a hand spray tends to have a larger droplet size and less nano material is left floating.

Still it makes for an interesting concern.

  14. Bin-dun? on £52 Million Govt Funding for New UK Supercomputer · · Score: 1

Okay heres a thought for the enterprising uni-students out here (I have a job and no free time so it's up to the graduates to solve this one). why not write a seti@home-esk bit of software that can be deployed on university desktops/servers (WIN/MAC/*nix) that can run whole/segments of custom written programmes.
Imagine the power of every uni-desktop all running together in parralle! Plus you get constant free upgrades. The solution would need it's own c++/java esk language for the tasks to be written in, some kind of local administration to allow uni admins to schedule processesing if it is incovenient to run during the day and some kind of security to stop people writing DDOS programes... anyway worth a thought.

On a side note I think the reason these robots are being developed for the Japanese market is not just down to a reluctance to accept foreign workers but more to do with the fact that elderly japanes people are very light. 22. Good Nuclear Side effects on 'No Quick Fix' From Nuclear Power · · Score: 3, Insightful

Several post have mentioned that simply becoming more reliant on nuclear power for our electrical needs wont really reduce our carbon emissions that much, this is only partly true.

Coal/Oil/Gas stations would by definition produce more CO2 than a Nuclear station, however the big Carbon saving comes from nuclear vehicles(okay stay with me). By nuclear cars I actually refer to a hydrogen (or similar) vehicle that has its fuel create by nuclear power (i.e. Electrolysis). If 25% of the US and Europe's cars all switched to this virtually carbon free energy source then we would see some serious carbon reduction.

  25. I think the idea could hold water on Was Thomas Edison Right about DC Power? · · Score: 1

A wacking great DC supply to power a server room is a good idea as one big converter has got to be more effecient than many smaller ones, also as previously mentioned it will reduce server room clutter and remove the need for inverters in the UPS as 6/12V goes very nicely into 48V.
Some people seem to be having an issue with the low voltage high loss in teh cabloes but this could be overcome with bigger cables (buzz bar?) and the fact that the power only has to travel maybe 200m tops.
