There are inherent, inescapable trade-offs to freedom, when we want to live together. One man's freedom to dam up a creek on his land is another man's drought, etc. Real life IS total anarchy at one end vs. Orwellian tyranny (or worse, actually) at the other. People make compromises with each other to achieve civilization, and they create government when they delegate the details of these compromises to specialists.
The PS3 is an excellent blu-ray and upscaling DVD-player. It is very reasonably priced for its capability. I bought mine solely to use for blu-ray and streaming and I *love* it. It replaced my high-maintenance HTPC. I even ended up playing a few games on it. My blu-rays come from Netflix and completely outclass downloads and streaming on my 52" screen. Blu-ray's only real competition right now is DVD, but as screen sizes grow larger, DVD's will fade away, in the living room at least. And barring some kind of broadband "miracle" from Obama, downloads will be hard-pressed to keep up. 100 million HD downloads every night in primetime sounds like a recipe for disaster anyway.
My PCjr was quite satisfactory. I bought it second-hand with the proceeds from the sale of my beloved Commodore 64 in 1986. I had done everything possible with the 64 and my "trading" friend had a Compaq.
It had the normal, though infrared, keyboard, and a Tecmar memory expansion. I promptly removed all the 4164's and replaced them with sockets and 256K chips, giving me enough memory to run standard PC apps.
No kidding. I think somebody's word-a-day calendar backfired on them. That is assuming that the calendar words are now chosen from the dictionary at random by Chinese factory workers.
Word. Laws are being written that would require new devices with higher precision and yet the agencies are still using the same old equipment. Part of this might also be due to that old phenomena in test equipment where the manufacturer puts a 4-digit display on a meter only capable of measuring to a precision of 3 digits. The legislators say "bust 'em at.08" and the police say "sure why not, it's got two digits".
Ha, if Slashdotters weren't all commies, they have enough money to buy some modern hardware, and then Vista would run great for them, provided they RTFM and make the proper adjustments. But maybe they couldn't buy new hardware anyway because they insist on dual-booting with Linux (uh oh, no drivers for that new chipset!). They sure as hell can't afford a Mac, so just where do all those Apple fan-boys come from??

Not really. This is just another "stupid salesperson" trick. I doubt anyone at the company really gave this much thought. It's just some idiot salesman "thinking outside the box."

Searle once followed me to the wrong parking lot while we argued about the consciousness of dogs or somesuch, following one of his speaking engagements at our university. He was a well-meaning fellow, but easily misled.
Scientific thinking natural in humans. We learn about reality through our interaction with it and we empirically create models consistent with reality. These models are the basis for our exceptional ability to adapt. We use them to predict, plan, and build -- and when they don't work we change them. Eventually they work very well. Pragmatically speaking, our models come into alignment with reality. Philosophy, mathematics, and any other attempts at rational thought all develop from the same basic practical needs to survive in and adapt to a complex and changing environment. Some types of philosophical thinking may not have direct, practical, testable applications but they may help us create higher-level models in which to integrate our counter-productive, vestigial fears.
I just get my Blu-rays from Netflix. For the rare few that are good enough to keep, I'll buy them. And if I need a copy for a portable device, I just get the DVD version from Netflix, because Blu-ray is a waste on anything but a big screen.
In the context of the cancellation of Stargate Atlantis and it's replacement with Space: 90210, Sci-Fi can shove Caprica and Sanctuary where the 3 suns of Tatooine don't shine.

Where there is great freedom for you, there is great freedom for others to take advantage of you.

So then how do you explain all the idiots with bluetooth headsets?

Darned Michael Bay haters. I loved "The Island". But then I liked "The Postman" and "Battlefield Earth" too.
Please help me.

Just who was the jackass that decided we had to say "remediated" instead of "fixed"??
Bah, the FIB are sissies. I work for U.L. Paper.

I suspect you have a banana stuck under your Selectric's period key.

Calm down Bruce, we'll get our six-wheelers off your lawn...

Hey, black holes in the upper atmosphere are just fine with me, but NOT IN MY BACKYARD!!

Thanks for chiming in, I was having trouble understanding how BASIC for the II would be much more than a superset of that for the I.
Al Gore?

Intolerant bastards. There were a couple good episodes.
