You say clone. However, maybe they only share their similarities because they have found what might appear to be most effective way of solving the problem at hand. Or at least the most effective way that the most people are familiar with without having to spend a long period of time learning how to use software that does the same thing as other software they already know how to use.
After all, one could argue that linux is just trying to emulate Windows (Lindows anyone?). Certain games are played certain ways because people don't like having the rules changed.
My first thought would be to setup webcams in every room watching doors, windows, sinks... thermometers... et cetera and setup a PC to stream them out somehow.

If you build a big billboard along a superhighway saying "Joe's Diner: Chicken Sandwich $5" you shouldn't sue someone for saying "Joe's Diner has chicken sandwiches for $5." Its all information, its all 1s and 0s; it shouldn't matter whether its stored as a JPEG or an HTML, or a MP3 for that matter.
Have you been in public in America lately? When I'm not hanging out with people long branded as geeks or nerds, I feel a great sense of avoiding what you were describing; actively learning something. ...now seriously people, look at the time frame. Over those same years, music patrons had to endure things like the Backstreet Boys, n-sync, and *cough*Brittany Spears*cough*... There's why 12.8543% of the people in question stopped buying CDs right there.
Wow where are my mod points when I need them; funniest thing I've read here in a long time.... "talented economists, financialists, and lawyers"? How do you think of this stuff...
But of course the people working at gas stations could work at _NAMEOFRENEWABLEENERGY_ stations and _NAMEOFRENEWABLEENERGY_ "refineries". Hydrogen, e85, etc have to be made and distributed all the same, just in different scales.

Makes you want to just go hug Big Brother doesn't it? I love Big Brother.
So is the paradoxical question of the modern tech culture we enjoy—which is more important: freedom or privacy?
Something to consider before bashing "clones."
