Heh, I had an A500 and then an A1200, and I absolutely loved those machines. I have never liked Windows, but I have always liked MacOS less. Always is in this case from 1999 and onwards.

Kubuntu you say, I'll have to take a closer look.

I do know how to close down programs on the Mac, and others have used that particular machine at my work, and seem to be happy about it. I'm not saying anything about the stability of the OS (though I had three crashes during those six months), but programs (especially Code Warrior, Cyberduck and Opera) tend to crash.

With "circumvent" I mean: Installing TweakUI, AV, firewall etc, and altering a bunch of values in the register. Yes, it's tedious and shouldn't be needed, but at least the machine is working fine after that.

By the way, I would like to thank Rich for his desktop manager, without which working on the Powerbook would have been near impossible.

Seems the Mac fanbois are having a field day.

Am I the only one on this forum who prefers working in WinXP? And before you mod me troll, I worked on a Powerbook for half a year, but found its shortcomings too frustrating. At least on a WinXP machine there are ways to circumvent the annoyances. On a Mac I'm stuck with them:

    1. The horrible windows management,
    2. the slooooow task switching, and
    3. frequent program crashes.

So no thanks, if I can't get a unix machine, I'll stick with WinXP, thank you very much.

As long as it is not another id card. Being a Swede living in the Netherlands I have a collection of eight cards (I can think of right now):

    1. Swedish driving license,
    2. Swedish passport (actually not valid as identification in Sweden),
    3. EU medical/hospital ID (but this one is only for convenience I think),
    4. ID for my monthly train ticket,
    5. ID for my monthly tram ticket,
    6. Gym ID,
    7. Video rental store ID, and
    8. Library ID.

Needless to say, I could do with a few less. Whether the last three qualify is debatable of course, but since I should not need either of them I thought I'd mention them anyway.

With some sort of "smart" card, if I could get rid of the student, bank or credit cards as well that would be nice.

Certainly a good idea. Applies to any piece of machinery - gun, chain saw, car.

Yes, it is. Unfortunately, there are so many people who do not.

quite a large percentage of people who carry firearms have either training or a good bit of experience.

I'll just have to disagree with you on this one, then.

If by domestic disputes, you mean an altercation in the United States, you're probably right. Other than that, I think you're misusing the phrase.

Since I couldn't find "altercation" in the dictionary, I'm unable to argue this point.

    you're likely a prohibitionist

Well, duh. Besides, I live in Sweden, so I guess it comes with the upbringing and territory. But having basic military training, I know how to handle a gun correctly. I also know how easy it is to not handle a gun correctly. Just looking at the people populating the firing ranges here makes me glad we have tight gun control.

    a false sense of security

No, it's the guns that give a false sense of security. But of course you are free to keep on fooling yourself.

And yeah, I'm Swedish so I don't really have to care, but I lived in Michigan for a while.

  19. Re:Why you let the citizens arm on Bill Could Restrict Freedom of the Press · · Score: 4, Insightful

What you are saying is very fine in theory, but there are a few issues:

    1. The person purchasing a gun must know how to handle it.
    2. And know how to handle it in a crisis situation. Remember that the bad guy probably knows how to handle a gun better than the victim, and will assume that the victim is armed.
    3. Most people killed by gunfire (in the U.S.) are done so in domestic disputes. It is a fact: You are more likely to get shot by someone you know than by a burglar/thief/other criminal.

Just look at that neighbour you hate. Do you really want him to carry a gun? The only thing more dangerous than an idiot is an idiot with a gun.
