  1. What I do on The Soda Situation - Succulent Drinks w/o the Sweets? · · Score: 1
I hear your pain. About a year ago I stopped drinking sugar soda. Here are the things that I do:

    • I got used to Nutrasweet/Asparamitane. When coming from the can (as opposed to the fountain,) it's not bad.
    • Drinks sweetened with Spleda taste more like real sugar then the high fructose corn syrup versions that you're used to. It's also less sticky!
    • Minute Maid Light is actually very good. It's only 2% juice, so the sugar content is negligable.
    • Coke Zero and Diet Coke with Spleda are very close to real coke. Personally, I prefer the Spleda version over real Coke because high fructose corn syrup leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
    • 7Up has some Spleda sweetened diet flavors that are excellent.
    • Avoid fountain drinks: Diet Coke from the fountain is sweetened with an Asparimitaine/Saccarine mix that makes it taste more like Tab.
  2. I have a DVR and I watch commercials on Live Commercials Will Save TV? · · Score: 2, Interesting
I have a DVR and I watch commercials. Typically, when I'm skipping through them, if it looks interesting I'll watch a second or two.

The problem is that advertisers aren't being very scientific about this. When you read a newspaper, no one forces you to read the ads, yet they are very effective! No one has proven that skipping ads makes them less effective.

I think advertisers would be surprised if they tried to determine how much of their message "sticks" when viewers can skip through them. Specifically, when someone is skipping through an ad, that person is paying close attention. Likewise, even when people have the ability to skip an ad, they will still let them play while they walk to the kitchen for a [insert heavily advertised snack or beverage].

A company like Tivo might want to consider investing in experiments that demonstrate how a Tivo can make traditional television advertising more effective.

This really is a case of starting a consumer goods company that just uses someone else's trademark as a way of avoiding advertising costs.

I think consumers will end up buying whatever the salesman puts in front of them when they buy a shiny new TV. Given that stores like Best Buy hate format wars, they'll just direct people to combo players and pretend that there's no difference. After all, that's what happened with the format war between 33RPM and 45RPM records once the industry realized that it was just easier for record players to support both.

I think that's a little hard to justify for a home user. Given that peak usage is during daylight hours; I think homeowners would be better served with $10,000 solar panels that sell to the grid during the day.

Besides, electric companies already do this kind of thing. About 11 years ago I took a tour of a power plant that's buried inside a mountain, under a man-made lake. At night, when power's cheap, it pumps water from a river into the lake. During the day, when power's expensive, it runs as a traditional hydo-electric plant. http://www.berkshireweb.com/sports/comp/bearswamp. html

    • No one remembers SVHS! SVHS was a "super" VHS that failed miserably.
    • No one remembers the format war between 45RPM records and 33RPM records! It was resolved when someone realized that you could put a switch on the record player to adjust the speed.
    • There are devices on the market that can play both SACD and DVD-A, which are incompatible formats from Sony and the DVD forum.

Thus, I anticipate that one of two things will happen:

    • HD-DVD / Blu Ray will fail like SVHS.
    • Combo players will become the norm, and most consumers won't even know the difference between HD-DVD and Blu Ray.

I started working for Best Buy after I graduated from college. Fortunatly, I wasn't there long enough to ever own a Best Buy shirt. Because the store was in the process of opening, they had a lot of their best employees to start good momentum. Being knowledgeable, they didn't put me in a sales position; I was going to install car stereos at a much higher pay scale then most of the other people.

Overall, I was dissapointed with their hiring process. They didn't tell me that I would have to purchase tools during the interview. The company also twisted the rules around to keep me at a lower pay than I was offered.

For a web-based application where a hyperlink is more of an application function, widget, ect, there is a "good reason" to change away from the underline convention.

Also, it's worth reading the Wikipedia article on the Motorolla DVR. Some of the codes it gives for programming hidden buttons into the remote are very useful.
