Ok I'll be a little more specific with my argument:)
Online emulators which I'm sure are around is wonderful, however that is an obscure implementation and outside of the slashdot world, there isn't a lot of people that go out of their way scouring the net for this stuff. Also MS isn't a small pizza shop whos target market consists of 1000 ppl. They're instead trying to get this out to 1mil+ ppl, do you really think 5% of these people even know about SF2 online?
So let's look at who the target audience is for SF2 xbox live by first asking who plays SF2? Is it going to be the 10 year old kid who just got a 360 for their bday? Probably not, I doubt this kid even knows what SF2 is.
SF2 came out what, 15 years ago now? So the target audience could be anywhere from 20 - 30 years old. Some people in their mid to late 20's now have a family who I'm sure don't have oodles of time to waste looking for these online implementations of SF2. So these people, let's call them ex-avid gamers with families have this new shiny 360 (remember, MS's target audience are ppl who can afford the 360) have now heard about SF2 for xbox live. Wow, great idea MS, you can now target the older gen with a absolute CLASSIC coin-op from back in the day.. All you have to do is buy some MS points and you literally click a button to download. (don't worry, I won't get into how STUPID MS points are)
So now, we have possibly a family man(or women:) who can't spend time fiddling on the internet, or may not even know about an online version of SF2 can now download SF2 online quick easily and be off and playing within minutes with Bob in England.
It's all about the implementation and getting this software onto your console. Hell I played SF2 with one of my friends every night for half of my 3rd year at uni and I had no clue about the online xbox version or the internet online implementations.. I'm a pretty avid gamer but like some other ppl have said, this is 2006 and not 1990.. But still, if someone said hey, all you gotta do is press this button and your online I would of picked this up eons ago..
I understand you can go to the local dollar store and pick up an SNES version of street fighter, or pretty much for any system. I know this is where people are getting confused, "why would I pay for this shit when I can dust off my old trust SNES and play for hours!" Well this is the reason why
YOU PLAY ONLINE WITH PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD!
that's right! instead of having a select few friends that actually know how to play this game or even care to play you can now play . . . online!
that's all I have to say, online play is a great selling point now a days.. I sure as hell will be buying this when it's released on the 2nd..
Ah man, damn you BELL! I was just about to switch to ADSL because the ROGERS highspeed police sent me a letter to stop downloading so much content! Why the hell do you let me have such highspeed data rates but you don't let me use it! (AND I PAY MORE MONEY FOR IT!)
And now BELL is going to monitor everything I do.. Bah.. Now I gotta figure out who the hell i'm going to give my money to..
Stupid Terrorists (who appear to be winning because I'm kinda loosing some of my privacy)
dude you definition of a network engineer is a little off. We're not talking about a desktop guy who clicks on the TCP/IP settings in windows and sets it to DHCP.
A true network engineer deals with massive infrastructure which includes managing different vendors (ie. service providers), routers, switches, routing techniques, etc.. When your dealing with an enterprise sized network it is technically the MOST important piece of the infrastructure.. No network, no Wan connectivity, no global/national company communications.. Communication is KEY especially when dealing with multiple timezones.
They make a lot more money than you think and are a hell of a lot smarter than the average person.
Even if MS drops the price of the 360 I highly doubt they would come out and say it just yet. If they do that it may affect the current demand for the 360.
If they do drop the price, they'll tell you a week before the PS3 launch.
Strange, I went into Bestbuy out in the suburbs (Brampton) and walked in and saw they had a bunch of the lite's kicking around. So I picked one up with no problems at all:)
That being said I currently own a PSP and my bro has the regular DS. Yea, let's just say I haven't touched my PSP since my bro got his DS and the DS Lite is a huge step forward for this platform. When comparing the two systems the Lite is so much better I can't believe the old DS and the new one are the same price!
I doubt anyone in their right mind would buy a regular DS now that the Lite is out.
I personally think Sony's way of marketing the Blu-ray is hopelessly flawed. Let's review this scenario
1. User buys a PS3 because user wants to play games 2. User has to pay well over 200 bucks extra because the blu-ray drive is in the PS3 3. Sony will not use blu-ray for any of the games (they've already come out and stated this) 4. Blu-ray dies a horrible death (ie, betamax, UMD, etc) 5. User who spent that money now has to deal with being forced into buying a blu-ray drive that isn't really usable anymore.
This is what Sony is thinking right now
1. Our brand is so kick ass that every customer(who we think are sheep) in the world will blindly buy anything that has PS in frot of it (almost. cough PSP) 2. Hey, why don't we put the blu-ray drive into PS3. If we do that everyone will buy it right? Which means we can beat out HD-DVD!! 3. Profit 4. Blu-ray wins the race
If Sony actually thinks that people will accept a $600 price tag for a game system they are pretty crazy.. Yes all PS3's will be sold out on launch day, but what will happen one year after? Or 2 years?
I dunno, I really want to force myself into buying a PS3.. But even for me, 600 for a system is almost a complete waste. Unless Sony can prove on launch day their system IS infact better than the 360, I may entertain it then.. But until that day, I'm happily playing my PS2/Xbox360..
Hey I would agree with the author on this "hit 60, nowhere to go except spend 3 hours in MC"
I got into WoW during the first christmas it was out.. I'm quite a casual player, basically took me 8months to hit 60.. I then started getting into the high end content spending hours and hours in ZG, MC, UBRS, LRBS, etc, etc..
My bro who played on another server was apart of the most powerful/organized guild I've ever seen! Every single player had tier 2 armor/weaps pretty much all of the best.. One day my bro snapped and sharded all of his items and quit the game. So I asked him "wtf you do that for? you had the best shit, were uber strong" . His answer was the following
"you know what, why the hell am I wasting my life getting fat while running BwL and all these other instances to get good gear and items when all I can do is just stand in orgimmar like a complete moron with nothing to do but go back into these instances and waste more time"
So I thought, damn.. your right.. After spending hours, if not days worth of playing time the only thing I can look forward to is gear.. And I seemed to have the worst luck with instancing, i literally walked away with nothing but shitty blues and maybe one purple ring that was a complete waste. Big fakin deal.. once you hit 60 there really is nothing to do except running instances over and over again.. Sure there were BG's, but even then that become boring as hell..
I quit WoW, but I'm hoping burning crusade will bring back that spark in the game.. Until then, I'm going to spend my WoW time doing other things.
There really is NO point to having a drive larger than 20gb. What are you going to fill it with? MP3's?? bah, that's very doubtful.
I've tried to fill the 20gb drive in my 360 and its proving to be quite difficult. And I've downloaded the online content, but I'm still only using 10gb.. If it's cheaper to put a 20gb drive in there than a larger one who cares, keeps the costs down (even if it's a very small cost).
Now if the system is hacked and we can run games off the hard drive than yes, that size really sucks. But I'm pretty sure MS/Sony didn't work that into their overall model.
Maybe they're not having to much success with creating apps on the CELL. Hopefully they'll open it up for the genius's of the world to take a stab at coding in the cell environment. For the coders who want to experiment with the CELL, this could be an attractive offering. I"m sure a CELL desktop/server will cost a hell of a lot more than a $599.
Could be a good thing if they actually give access to all of the hardware. But I doubt it, my PSP is still on firmware 1.5.
Does anyone find that a little strange that these desktops were not protected by a firewall? How the hell can this guy look INTO the US governments network? That sounds like horribly bad security on their behalf..
I think they should send the security administrator to jail for violating national security..
The reason for the benchmarks is to prove that apple is not churning out typical x86 pc's, but ones that are made with higher quality parts which is why they cost more $$$.
Maybe compare the new mac platform to Alienware. They cost much more than the bargin basement PCs you buy for $500 at your local computer store. So why is alienware significantly more money? It's because of higher quality parts
MrJynx
holy shit.. That sounds exactly like my job.. seems i'm locked in this grind as well. But since i have such a diverse knowledge base of computing I can't seem to move anywhere. I move things break, ppl can't fix so they come back to me.. It's a never ending cycle of shit.
But in a different light it's kinda cool having people depend on you at work. Sure everyone's replaceable, but its nice to know it'll be a real pain in the ass to replace me.
I've had my xbox360 since launch.. I haven't played it immensely but the only things that annoyed me was call to duty2 wouldn't save properly (which i hear was fixed, but i can't stand to do that training mission one more time!) and dead or alive 4 crashed when it was in multiplayer a few times.
I have not had any any freezing problems.. Mine stands vertically but it isn't in a cabinet. I can see that being a problem because it does get warm.
I have no idea why everyone seems to be forgetting about one thing.
WINDOWS XP DOES WORK ON MAC G5 WITH VIRTUAL PC BY MICROSOFT
yes it run like complete ass because it's emulating to the powerPC architecture. But what happend recently between apple / MS. didn't they sign some 5 year agreement? Gee, i wonder why..
I strongly believe within the next year or two MS will be offering Virtual PC for the Intel chips in the Macs.. WHen this happens no more dicking around with EFI, 64bit, dual booting and all that other crap everyone's trying to hack onto the new intel macs. You'll be able to run XP hopefully almost perfectly in a window within OSX.
MrJynx
lol.. are you joking or haven't fully thought this one through?
I work downtown Toronto as well, and I'm not afraid of this one bit. Why? Because we don't even have wireless NICs in any of our equipment! Don't you know wireless is horrible for security? If you can't get rid of the wireless cards why not limit their access via a proxy server? And if your afraid of the users removing the proxy information, then switching to the unprotected wifi link then you can set a policy on the domain to lock that ability down.
Sure they can change it in the registry, but if that were the case i'm sure they've already broken your web security.
If they rolled the game back to maybe one patch after launch I'd consider going back if all of the original players returned. But I know that will never happen, so i'll just continue with my rant about why this game pissed me off. The game had complexity, was actually somewhat fun, and the grind hadn't set in just yet.
People at that time actually experimented with professions and once they found something they liked, they kept it! there were people in the cantina's, we had real people vendors making stuff, rangers hunting, BH's weren't doing much but had cool weapons, etc. This was when the game had an actual economy, people created pseudo corporations and made a killing!
The game started to go into the shitter once they gave everyone holocrons as a christmas gift. That started the real grinding evolution. A friend of mine actually did 32 professions to get his Jedi. The whole jedi thing didn't outright destroy the game because ppl still played it and worked together to grind out those professions (and some actually discovered hey i actually enjoy this profession, screw jedi). But there was still a need for the interdependicies between the professions. Armorsmiths still needed to get minerals to grind out their profession, which meant they needed architects to build the factories and the miners needed the extractors so everything worked out quite well(I used to be an armorsmith which is why i used this example).
BUt now, they have completely destroyed everything all of the pre NGE players created, everything was scaled back from 32 professions to 9 "iconic" professions (If i hear iconic, or whatever the hell word they kept using i'll puke) . It actually appeared to be the work of lazy ass people. Maybe they fucked up the game so bad that the only way to undo everything was to have this wonderful NGE.
And who the hell made the call to let everyone be a jedi. When the game first came out they said "yes you can be a jedi but it'll take you a long time to figure it out" and they kept up with it for a long time.. I think it took almost a year for the first jedi to appear and now everybody and their grandmother are a jedi.. crap!
I'd go back to the game only if I knew the same players returned, which is highly doubtful because they've probably found a new home in World Of Warcraft.
I've never seen anything in my entire life managed so poorly from a software deployment/change point of view. Hell, MS has a better track record than these clowns. And this game has totally ruined the star wars experience for me. I don't think i'll ever try another starwars game again!!
Good point. But if the company is really anal about their security they can use a VPN system such as checkpointAI. Basically once it has been configured/installed properly on the laptop it will stop all internet connectivity until you setup a valid VPN tunnel into your corporate network. Once you have that valid connection your now back behind the firewall which was originally blocking this google desktop data port.
If people say that's a little over the top, remember, this is the companies laptop and they can do whatever they want
How about this. Why doesn't google pick some obscure port for getting this data, make it public, and if the corp security guys want to stop the google copy, block the port on the F/W, problem solved!!!!
so let's run through this scenario. The professor for a computer science security class wants students to scan some networks. This is the type of information he wants them to provide
"He wants them to write an evaluation of what they find: what ports are open and what service could be running on them, Host names and IP addresses, OS, version, last update, patch status, what shares are available, what kind of network traffic and what vulnerabilities they see."
Some people have suggested to setup a sandbox, my question is where are you going to get the servers? Do you think that shit appears magically? Who can verify the actual network sandbox was setup properly? The students? An outside consultant? You see all of this stuff costs $$$, I'm sure the professor has an already small budget to do his own research but that's about it.
The next point is how is this illegal? The students must use apps that are available on the public domain. And if you think some uber hacker must of written it you are incorrect. Did you know OSX has a port scanner built into it? I put in the address, it tells me all the open ports. Is that illegal? Oh and what type of services are running on them? Common, what is up with that, that's so easy to figure out! Just google the port num, and you'll get a listing of all the possible apps that could use this port.. It's not rocket science! You could also connect to it by telneting to the port and see if any user input returns a response from the server.
How is determining host names illegal?? A simple NSLOOKUP will tell you what the DNS name, and you can go even further and check those DNS lookup sites and figure out who the contact is. Try it.. It works pretty well!
All of the other information is easily accessable, if this equates to illegal hacking then I technically had no idea what illegal hacking really is..
Now if this guy wanted his students to actually try and break a system then yes, I don't agree with it. But if they're just simply exploring the different tools available to them on the internet what's the big deal?
The PS3 isn't going to be available in NA until next year at the earliest. It MAY come out this year in Japan, but we all know 360 has almost no market base there.
If they are going to release halo3, it's going to happen when the PS3 hits the US markets, not when it's released in Japan. That should give bungie another year, maybe a bit longer to get it finished for the 360.
Obviously this is just my prediction. Lets see what happens
Maybe you should of purchased some of their chips back in the late 90's! then those 9000 ppl may still have a job
MrJynxx

Basically once it has been configured/installed properly on the laptop it will stop all internet connectivity until you setup a valid VPN tunnel into your corporate network. Once you have that valid connection your now back behind the firewall which was originally blocking this google desktop data port.
If people say that's a little over the top, remember, this is the companies laptop and they can do whatever they want
How about this. Why doesn't google pick some obscure port for getting this data, make it public, and if the corp security guys want to stop the google copy, block the port on the F/W, problem solved!!!!

Ok,
so let's run through this scenario.
