  1. won't replace golf on WoW the Next "Golf"? · · Score: 2, Interesting

    Ok,

About 5million ppl worldwide play WoW. I'm sure many more people play golf. I suspect maybe MMORPG's can be used for team building, but not building new business contacts. How are you to know the guy on the other end isn't a 10 year old kid.

This posting did kinda make me laugh. I personally play WoW with a boss who is two levels above me, so it's definitley helped break the "oo your to high of a manager to talk to" gap. It also provides me with a way to discuss shop outside of the normal bounds, but that doesn't happen very often because we use WoW to escape the BS at work.. :)

huh? incompentant infrastructure managers? Do you have any idea the difficulties of patching servers/desktops across an enterprise infrastructure? Based on your comments I would assume no.

Remember, when your dealing with 10 MS servers supporting 100 desktops (arbitrary example), you can patch daily if you want to. But when your dealing with desktops/servers which number in the 10's of thousands spread across an entire country and different timezones it is no easy task.

Everytime there is a patch weekend we have to script the deployment, test with every line of business to ensure the patches don't interfere with their current software, manually update some of our servers, etc, etc. Even when MS comes out with a patch out of schedule that means we have to do this this twice in one month which is a huge strain on people who not only support the infrastructure but now have to do these damn patches.

And you call this incompetant? I think it's called Risk Management not incompetancy.

That's easier said than done. In a lab environment I'm sure it works, but the issue here is not all blackberries can accept updates on the fly, but instead have to download it manually to the blackberry.

With the new updates to the BES servers, I think 4.0 to be exact, it does allow you to push updates over the air but it doesn't always work very well. Company I work for pushes software wirelessly and we barely get 75% acceptance rate on a user base of approx 1000 and we have pretty much use only 2 types.

And what if someone is using older technology? Not all blackberries are made the same way with the same software so implementing this may be costly in the long run. Ie. may have to offer free upgrades which they already do, but if they have to offer another one to correct a simple bug it'll be extremely costly especially when the userbase is so large.

So GTA:SA you run around senselessly killing and destroying property, but when they throw in some scene where you have to do some crazy process to get this small glimpse of sex the game is pulled from the shelves. seems backwards don't ya think :)

Isn't it easier to just google the word "sex" ??

  5. Similar situation on How Do You Job-Hunt If You Work Overtime? · · Score: 1

I'm basically in a similar situation. I just finished university about a year and a half ago, I managed to get an intermediate position right out of school. So monday -> friday it was all about work, I didn't get home till about 9:30pm every night and even today I usually don't get home till 8:30 or 9.. And for a time I didn't care I was making oodles of money, I just wanted my life back! But that's the way it is in this industry when you first start out.

The one thing that I find strange is the fact you have been given this additional responsibility but no raise or job promotion. It can be looked at in 2 different ways

    1. They're taking advantage of your skills and since your so young they feel it's ok
    2. HR is dragging their feet and you'll get that promotion/raise in a few months
Also once you hit 1 year if your company is big enough you can apply to internal positions.

Now my suggestion is to make your pain be known to your manager. It's not like your being a cry baby if your hours reflect your being overworked.. The one thing my manager stressed to me over the last year or so is if you don't ask it's not going to be given.. After working for a year in my current group I did find the balls to say "hey you know what, you guys depend on me way to much, what happens if I jump to this other group" . Well after this discussion I recieved a promotion in title to a Sr. position and a 15% raise. I think it was a fair trade considering I'm now responsible for the infrastructure connecting 4000+ pc's across the country which in turn is attached to 50,000, and I'm only 25. But, it took hard work and half my head of hair :) I guess here's to trying my best to retire early!

Not sure if anyone knows about this yet because I haven't seen any coverage on the news networks. Other people have stated their xbox's are completely unusable and now have to wait 4+ weeks for a replacement..

On a side note I have to admit I'm very impressed with the new dashboard. I know people bitch and whine that shouldn't matter because they want the xbox to PLAY GAMES ONLY. But it truly does add to the overall experience of the game and the unit.. So far i'm happy with it, PGR3 looks amazing in 1080i mode, it literally feels like you are actually driving when in the cockpit view..

Maybe they should sell their AI component to other developers, but i'm sure devs would prefer to use their own shitty AI to keep costs down.

Also battlefront 1 was a complete waste of money for me(played for 3 days). I have never seen AI that stupid! doom wasn't even that bad, at least in doom they shot back!

But IRC was realtime, so if you were working on a project let's say with Bob on the other side of the world, having the ability to communcate to "Bob on the other side of the world" in realtime almost for free was amazing.

Look at all of the tools today, it's all about collaboration, where did that start! IRC/BBS/Newgroups

yeaa, i'm gonna have to disagree with your higher UID numbers comment. I have been an avid slashdot fan/reader for many years, I actually don't remember the first time I stumbled onto this site(late 90's at the very least). However, since I'm now only 24, I tended to keep my mouth shut on the comments side of this site because well, people that you describe tend to make posting scary and intimidating. I can tell you for sure that there are much smarter people on here than myself. So instead of taking the risk of being called an idiot or uninformed(this is my teen years), I just decided not to post or even get an account (site is free). So for me, I'm a LONG time lurker, very very short time poster :) hence, my UID is huge.. As for taco's post. It's very understandable he is pissed off, regardless of what agreements we agree to by saying "accept" who the hell actually reads it verbatim, line for line. I'm not a lawyer so I really don't understand or care what is in them, so I just quickly jump past it and say accept(I'm being honest here :) . But remember, WoW players (myself included) pay a monthly fee to access this game which understandably is used to pay for the ongoing cost of creating and maintaining a persistant world. But the average joe doesn't give two shits about the on going costs, all they know is i'm paying money every month so I should be able to do almost anything I want including selecting a unique name. So after months of playing they just say guess what buddy, your name is gone pick another and people are supposed to roll over and say "ok SIR!". Ok, sure, there is a commander designation in the game, but that came AFTER he probaly selected cmdrtaco, and to let him go 45lvls w/o a peep from the GM's? That's poor management of the realm and they should have let him keep the name.. my 2 cents.. hope it makes sense.. MrJynx

Well, the drugs eventually gave him colon cancer (approx. 10 years of heavy use) and passed away 2 years ago. But, without the kidney transplant he would have never made it past 1992.
