In the Shared Source Initiative there are licenses which are Just windows related. I am not sure they have stated which SSI license they will be using. Refer this link for all the different SSI licenses.
There is a good article about whether SSI is open source or not at this link.
I am not sure if any of the license underneath SSI is classified as open source or not.
If people had understood how patents would be granted when most of today's ideas were invented, and had taken out patents, the industry would be at a complete standstill today. I feel certain that some large company will patent some obvious thing related to interface, object orientation, algorithm, application extension or other crucial technique. If we assume this company has no need of any of our patents then they have a 17-year right to take as much of our profits as they want. The solution to this is patent exchanges with large companies and patenting as much as we can.
Now that large company is MS and is trying to patent the obvious.
Hilf's work around interoperability may be best exhibited within the Open Source Software lab at Microsoft that tests its products in every conceivable environment. The lab is currently running 30 to 40 different Linux distributions. Hilf also heads up Shared Source Licensing, which represents Microsoft's approximation (that's a generous assessment) of a GPL-type license model by providing IT administrators and developers access to source code to test and review. This helps organizations make internal application fixes, do security evaluations and ensure interoperability with their own environments.
Interoperability -- Why don't they support Open formats then. Why don't they come up with proper documents so open source vendors can interop. They will be friendly as long as it do not hit there cash cow products i.e Windows OS and MS Office.
MS's Mantra is you can open source any product as long as it runs on windows and we are not yet developing that product.
This copyright violation is going on with YouTube since before google acquired them. Why didn't Viacom act at that point in time and close the website.
Since google has the money and I think this will be setteled out of court by google giving them some money to get away.
In the future we can see some big payday for Viacom
The Commission unilaterally suspended enforcement of the obligations imposed by the March 2004 Decision pending the Court of First Instance's consideration of Microsoft's request for interim measures, which request was denied by the Court of First Instance on 22 December 2004 (MEMO/04/305). Both before and after that date, the Commission engaged in discussions with Microsoft about its compliance, and conducted a market test of Microsoft's proposals on interoperability (see IP/05/673). In the light of the results of that market test, the Commission issued a decision on 10 November 2005 pursuant to Article 24(1) of Regulation 1/2003 (the Article 24(1) Decision). This decision warned that should Microsoft not comply by 15 December 2005 with its obligation to: (i) supply complete and accurate interoperability information; and (ii) make that information available on reasonable terms, it would face a daily fine of up to 2 million (see IP/05/1695).
Supply complete and accurate information: This is very vague and how would they even test whether the documentation is complete and accurate
Make that information available on resonable terms: Then specify the terms rather than going back and forth on telling MS, your royalty rates are high. If comission finds that the royalty rates are high, then specify the maximum that MS can charge on these kind of things. If comission determines it should be free and specify that. I am not understanding why would comission waste so much time in coming to some form of conclusion on this one.
Be it MS or other company, software piracy is a pain in the b_tt. No wonder MS goes such a great length in making sure it is a licensed copy. Here at/. people discount because it is MS loosing money. But in reality those computers could have installed open source OS such as Linux or BSD and that would have atleast contributed to good desktop OS competition
Bingo. I agree with you. MS wants to stop these kinds of things happening. This would not generate business for them. Companies can use Free OS on those machines to keep the cost low. This is a defensive patent from their point of view. They would not attempt to get into this kind of business. But in case google or some other company tries it later for targeted ad, here is how MS will fight.
Overall, MSN search results had the lowest percentage (3.9%) of dangerous sites while Ask search results had the highest percentage (6.1%). Google was in between (5.3%). Check the comprehensive study for all the data."
Microsoft's Strider HoneyMonkey Exploit Detection System seems to be working.
This article do not have much information. Is the server software or the desktop software that is gaining hold there? Linux has always grown in server market. IMHO, Growth in Desktop market will be a great deal as that helps the growth of the Linux much faster than server growth.
MS don't have a serious competitor in Desktop OS. Right now they are competing with themselves. As long as they are able to sell more licenses of any of their brand of OS they don't care to innovate. I think when Apple and/or Linux Desktop becomes a serious competitor you see MS coming out with something. Firefox is the best example in this regard. IE7 is getting some make over on security front and also on UI front. Even though it is just an imitation of Firefox, it is a welcome change.
Frenchies are trying to kill apple and make MS a monopoly here. By bringing these amendments MS WMA format will become ubiquitous. MS may be happy with this development
During my recent trip to India, also horribly touched with extremist
violence, I was reminded by their soft spoken Prime Minister, Dr
Manmohan Singh, that the British had seriously erred by clinging too long
to their former colony. Despite widespread opposition to their presence,
British politicians continued to insist that their departure would lead to
chaos. Dr Singh said, 'But it would be our chaos, dont you see?' At that
moment I understood what he was saying.
Atleast people in India seems to elect a sensible PM. Our politicians have lot to learn. May be Indians elect educated people
to the top post(current president used to be a scientist).
Especially in US, we have elected an idiot to the top post and enitre world is affected by him. No wonder world hates us.
The strike has been called following a breakdown in negotiations over pay, Ms McManus said.
"[The workers] are concerned that NCR is attempting to stonewall so they can use the Howard Government's new WorkChoices laws to cut away at wages and conditions. These workers do not want to inconvenience the public, but have no option to achieve pay increases."
I was googling on workchoice law. This is as per Queensland govt under "What does it mean for employees"
Agreement making under the new laws will lead to a reduction in wages and conditions for workers.
All work, whether currently covered by an award or not, can be offered to a worker conditional on them signing an agreement that signs away basic entitlements.
Employees can lose basic entitlements such as:
rest and meal breaks;
incentive-based pay;
annual leave loading;
allowances;
penalty rates and overtime; and
control over hours and rosters.
Employees may not be entitled to penalty rates for working on public holidays. However, an employee will have the right to refuse a request to work on a public holiday if he/she has reasonable grounds for doing so.
Employers will also have the right to dismiss staff due to operational requirements and then offer employment to the same workers under a new agreement.
Employees may lose the extra money they currently enjoy for shift work and overtime and time off to spend with their family over the weekend.
The only legally enforceable minimum conditions are annual leave, personal leave, parental leave and ordinary hours. These replace the no-disadvantage test and agreements will no longer undergo any formal approval process.
The federal Government has led workers to believe that they will be protected by award conditions when making agreements.
With these kind of laws I dont think they are doing anything wrong. Show solidarity to our tech brothers and sisters down under.
US congress needs to introduce an other bill that limits windows as the only OS that can run on the computers (or may be anything that has microprocessor or may be anything MS thinks their OS can run on). This bill should be introduced in the best interest of the people. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OUR CONGRESS representative working for the people.
So what the hell is the advantage of "Starter" and "Home Basic" over XP Home Edition with SP2? Security?
MSH not bundled, will likely be runnable on all upon downloading. IE7 available for XP..NET everywhere already. New Media Player, XP. So what's new for home users?
Stop asking questions like that. They are getting new OS called Vista which took long long time to develop.
Thats exactly right. Nobody disagrees that MS is a monopoly. But govts have to look at today's market and think can MS be competitive without bundling some of these goodies in their OS. Unbundling different items from OS do not offer level playing field. What offers level playing field is stopping MS from making unfair deals with OEMs not to include competitors applications.
We all know what a joke EU's ruling about unbundling media player from OS is.
I think this needs to stop. US needs to take this case to WTO.
Microsoft views open source through the lens of "coopetition from commercial and open-source strategies at the same time," Hilf said.
MS had always competed with IBM. IBM is seen has very good to Open source. IBM still makes profit benefiting from open source.
MS may be thinking along the same lines and I think they are not able to come up with a viable business plan of how to make use of open source movement that do not hurt their bottomline of MS OS and MS Office.
I dont buy computers, I build my own, I've been doing this for the past 7 to 8 years. With all the restrictions that apple puts in place for OSX I will never be able to try it. There could be lots of geeks who do this, may be they are minority which do not make any business sense for apple to sell OSX sans their hardware.
Really, folks if a company do not want you to use their software on any of the custom machines you build why even BUY their software. This is nothing but ego clash between Apple and hackers. I think apple has every right to shut these people down.
If you dont like their hardware DONT FUCKING BUY THEIR SOFTWARE EITHER
I think even though this program is specifically aimed at blog sites and can also be used to measure AdSense ads and help Google prevent click fraud.
This is a good buy for google.
That job has already been outsourced.

UK Gallon is more than US Gallon so you pay more. We have every reason to complaint. :)

How many Vista articles on /.
ZOnk, I KNOW NOW that Vista is not ready for DESKTOP.
I AM INSTALLING Ubuntu.

It has already been said, there is nothing stopping you to run Windows OS on Intel macs.
