I would be able to agree with you if it had a use as a standalone component. The Wiimote was presented to early adopters as "the controller". It had an accessory port. I believe that I read that it was Retro that said something along the lines of "we have this idea on how to expand the functionality of the Wiimote for Metroid Prime 3". The idea was good enough that Nintendo saw the potential and developed around its use. It is required for things, now, such as navigating through the Wii Channels, and a couple of other things (of which I do not recall).

Out of the box, not all games will require it, which is why the original comparison is not fair. The new Sonic game does not require it, ExciteTruck, and I believe the SMB does not require it either. I am not sure of the exact breakdown. The key point is that it is an accessory. But still, it is a good enough product that a lot of games will require it - not because it is an extra source of income for Nintendo, but because it creates a lot of options for developers. I am looking forward to seeing what other kind of uses developers will come up with, from a hardware standpoint.

Really, it comes down to the fact that the PS3 is build around the hardware of the system itself, in terms of power. The controller was an afterthought. I really don't think you will see a lot of games built around the gameplay mechanics of the controller. The Wii, on the other hand, was built around the gameplay mechanics when they decided that they didn't just want to create a more powerful system - but something different. The PS3 will do good at what it is supposed to do, as will the Wii. They just happen to have a common point (if you stretch it) that is a core part of one system's design, and an extra to the other.

..and the nunchuck is a controller "accessory" to the Wiimote and not the core motion sensing technology that Nintendo is selling here. Granted, the nunchuck has motion detection, but not like the Wiimote, itself.

I agree with the previous poster. It is a pointless comparison. The Wiimote and PS3 Controller are about as same as a motorcycle and a bicycle. Sure, they are two wheeled modes of transport, but you wouldn't take any comparison between the features of the two seriously. Not that one is better than the other, but it is apples and oranges.

I actually look at it slightly differently. Easily, I could see Microsoft huffing up over this to put on a front. Why? Simple. Lack of serious competition, like Google, means that they can maintain the status quo and continue to reap profits. Add a serious competitor to the picture, the profit margin decreases as there is someone not only to take a portion of the possible profits, but also forces an increased expenditure in things such as R&D and marketing.

This is the part that I don't get. How is it that they can be simultaneously disinterested and ultra-concerned about what their kids are doing or playing so much that they're demanding regulation? Do they suddenly have an epiphany, wake up, and realise that their pre-teen is playing a game that they disapprove of?

By the nature of your question, the "ultra-concerned" would be more likely to be a vocal minority. A disinterested party is likely not going to vocalize the fact that they don't care. I didn't mean to imply that there is only one type of parent, so my apologies if that is how I came through on that.

I fear for the future, not because of the kids or the games they play, but rather the lack of any real parenting going on in their homes.

I agree, wholeheartedly. The games issue only comes up because it is a symptom of the problem, and not the problem itself.

  13. Re:ESRB? on FTC Says More Regulation Needed For Games · · Score: 2, Insightful
I would assume that what else is needed would be enforcement. Ratings are one thing, but what do they ultimately mean if they are nothing more than a label on a box.

Today's society has changed. Teen and pre-teen children have larger amounts of finances than I did when I was a child. Television (and video games) and cash have become a steady replacement for babysitters, and often parents do not take an interest in what there child is doing.

The problem is still, ultimately, a parenting issue. It is in everyone's best interest to protect a child and have their parents be the decision maker. Enforcement wouldn't be a big brother approach, like some believe, but more a safety net. If a person, as a parent, would allow their kid to play a game that has been deemed age inappropriate, so be it. The parent would be the one to make the purchase. I just don't get what is so wrong with that.

Times change, and people tend to not accept it. When I was a kid, I remember going to the local store to pick up a pack of cigarettes for my mother. I was probably about nine, and the store was two hundred feet from the house. The act was innocent, and it was easy for the shopkeeper to know that (usually by a call-ahead from my mother). Of course, I am sure that there are a lot more nine year olds that would smoke the same pack of cigarettes in today's society, so enforcement of laws already on the book became more dominant.

Without something to enforce, then, the ratings system is - ultimately - pointless. Not because they don't get it right (most of the time), but because there is no substantial motivation for a proprietor to enforce them. Parents seem to be disinterested, removing any chance for a general honesty system to work.

The only thing preventing me from fully accepting that this is the real name for the Revolution is the fact that http://wii.nintendo.com/ does nothing, while http://revolution.nintendo.com/ still does.
