  3. Study Buddies Aren't All Bad on Psychopharm Going 'Mainstream' In Schools? · · Score: 0

This is a little paper I wrote after a few times using Adderall for cramming/exams. And, I'll note, that I have yet to find any difference (long term) in myself since then. --start article-- I am not an expert on the underground drug community and the black market based thereof. I am, however, aware that prescription drugs have become the new choice for this generation. Rx abuse has grown significantly, and, to me, does not seem a problem. There are people for legalization of marijuana or other drugs, but I can, for once, understand someone abusing a prescription substance. Now, before I get any harsh criticism about drug use, I want to explain my point of view on how it affected me, and why others have endulged as well. This is an account of emotional, mental, and physical effects of the "study buddy" drug Adderall (Amphetamine / Dextroamphetamine) My first time was the best. It always is. No expectations, no ideas. Just a test to see if it works. I took 40mg of Adderall XR. Within the hour, they had an effect. I was attentive to everything. Not i na paranoid state, but in a focused state. I re-organized many things out of sheer boredom. Any notes to take down were taken down with extra, personal side notes. All work was done within less time it normally takes. In fact, it was euphoria. I never felt so painfree. No anxiety or depression, which is commonplace in my normal routine, but the ability to work and converse and be happy. The other, noticable, side effeects included insomnia, hunger supression, a heavy pulse, and pupil dilation. I didn't eat lunch, and for dinner I barely managed to eat a slice of bread. I did not sleep either. I simply laid down for 6 hours, thinking on various thoughts, then closed my eyes and faked sleepiness in the morning. The buzz gradually wore off over the night, so the day after was normal feeling. Then, however, came the crash down period. Though it was rough, the more times I've used it, the less time I spend crashing. The worst symptom is a horrible depression. It is not just emotional, it is physical as well. All the time in euphoria causes the brain to, basically, run out of happiness. For the next week, I felt like complete feces. I wouldn't even talk really, just sit there for a while. After that week, I slowly drifted back to normal. Currently, I only spend a day or so to crash out. It could be tolerance, but I doubt so. Now, as a first hand account, some can see why it is used by 15% of the teenage populace. College students are more prone to abuse. However, in all those stats, I have yet to see one case of a decent dose causing a hospital visit. That's because it would take 400mg-500mg for a toxic dose. However, the circulatory system does get treated roughly. The pulse raises about 40% on average for a healthy person abusing the substance. This means high-intensity exercise could cause cardiac arrest. In all my times abusing it, I have yet to see a reason to stop. As long as you do not become addicted, and only use occasionally, it is, to me, my perfect drug.

If apple were to sell a version that runs on any generic x86 system, then they just won great interest in companies. Many companies want to switch to the Mac system because, let's face it, it is usually more friendly. Of course, it doesn't help that they also have to pay for a bunch of new systems. Compare that to the 500$ "economic" desktops and Apple looses a chance. If it could be that OS X were installed on that 500$ desktop, then you just got a win-win. Furthermore, it would help Apple develop diversity in applications. If the OS can be run on x86. them x86 can be ported to OS X. The same issue with drivers: companies would have to make a Windows and an OS X version. Apple is dedicated to serving the user, and once the issue of price-per-computer is eliminated, that gives them a lot of potential.

I can pose my 64-bit as a 32-bit sempron if i simply change it, and I'm sure that it could just as easily be branded Intel. At least that wouldn't involve decompiling and breaking various laws.

  12. Battle.net got killed too. on World of Queuecraft · · Score: 0

I play Diablo 2: LoD, Starcraft, and occasionally Warcraft III. The lag on Bnet is deadly. They have a lot more traffic then bandwidth, and even pay-to-play games, such as WoW, are starting to be affected. They need to find a quicker solution, especially if they plan on their expansion pack. Adding more servers is costly, but you could make money by lowering the transfer rate a little. Then, those hard-earned 60s can go to a different server, problem solved.

In the mid-90s, Apple fell to its knees. However, the discovery and development of the Win9x kernel ensured some new business for Apple. Now, with 2K (and soon to be Vista), the kernel is taking the approach apple has been taking all along. This now boils down to hardware. If apple can't find a stable, equal hardware platform, the windows market will win by default.

Of course, all this kernel development occured in unix in the early 90s. apple grabbed on, and it's taken microsoft a decade to catch up. The only difference is the hardware and user base. They want to catch on to x86 (in good stride) because PPC is slowly withering.

  16. It had time to become like this on Internet Suicide Pacts Surge in Japan · · Score: 1, Informative

Japan has always had a high risk of suicide. The movie, as well as some cultural knowledge, show that.

The term Hari Kari is really Hara Kiri. That's when a samurai or warrior would be dishonored in his actions, and would rather kill himself than bow down to a new ruling party or to shame.
Then, in the 1800s, when Japan moved for industrialisation, objective sucess became key. Most Japanese never switch careers.Success became the new standard. Someone who had great wealth or power would commit suicide over an incident that would bring them down.
Combine all this with a new, semi-anonymous network, and you can have suicide parties. Just like in California about a decade or so ago, when they all died together.

  17. It can be free... on Internet Radio Failing to Find Support? · · Score: 0

This is one of the reasons that paying for internet radio won't catch on. ShoutCast tried to make most internet radio stations free because the server and client are free and portable to other applications.

Anyone with a slight knowledge of port forwarding and the config file can set up a custom, free internet radio station. Quality and songs are simply determined by total bandwidth and music collection.

However, on the other side, people who plan on having more than 15 or 20 people listen in need to get higher upload bandwidth, which then plays into paying for it. It could be solved by running a P2P-style connection, where one server is really just to "echo" the main server. If enough people did that, then the issue of bandwidth would be solved. However, in cases it's not, adspace or fees become feasible options. Adspace is probably more common, because, tracing back to my first paragraph, ShoutCast is free. And so, the debate continues. However, as with apache, for us novices, a server can get set up and be a free personal thing, or we can connect to a 400-slot server.

The issue of whether this lives or not is really not an issue because internet radio doesn't seem to be up in the main stream. High bandwidth and money are a necessity for large stations, and it may end up like the airwaves: Clogged with ads or run by hobbiest.
