I was about 10 at the height of DN3D. I had it open the other day just as a timekill game, and forgot how enjoyable it was to search for an access card or just shoot the crap out of everything. Plus, if I recall correctly, there was a program called TEN that tried to allow internet play. Never toyed with it, but I can only imagine how fun that'd be.

As for a relevant reply, WoW needs a bit of help in terms of the leveling process. While running dungeons and raids is great, some players like playing by themselves, whether it be questing, grinding, farming, or something else. I recently uninstalled wow because, even if I stayed on task, I couldn't stand the quest/grind to the next level. Whenever I ran dungeons, groups collapsed completely. Guild was running Kara by the time I hit 65. And, though I may have ben 'slow', I played at least two hours a night.

One thing I've always said is that 'With WoW, there is always something to do." Unfortunately, it all boils down to grinding, levelling, questing, and farming. All repetitive, and yet the end-game is the same. Even with a great, fun guild, I couldn't stay interested. It felt like Diablo II after a while.

Agreed. The only game I can think of that I even played successfully was UT2004, and they built it from the ground up using SDL on the Windows platform.

From limited experience, I'll say that most blizzard games aren't too bad in that they will run on Wine/Cedega.

  15. Re:BleahBleahBleah. on Blizzard Announces StarCraft 2 · · Score: 1

While that's true, the amount of difference in player vs environment scaling was enormous. In Diablo I, weapons and items tended to have a few attributes, with unique items being the best. I usually had a white Broad Axe and that was sufficient. Some items had great stats and a negative stat bonus. Negative stats made the process of balancing a character more challenging. In Diablo II, all items just added up for more damage and almost had to be rare or better.

The difference in scaling continued on to WoW, where only the best of the best are desired.

However, in terms of graphics, spells, etc, you are completely right. No reason a Warrior should be casting Fireball.

  17. Personal Experience on Securing a High School Windows XP Computer Lab? · · Score: 1

This is my personal experience, but the system at our school seems generically feasible. There are some holes in the system (no command prompt, but running a .bat file pops it right up). The school uses WebSense to block games/downloads, but a slimbrowser/firefox client and a codeen proxy bypasses it. The main system itself is a citrix system, which is occasionally inefficient but useful for at-home logins. If they simply removed execute priveliges from My Documents (they did it on flash drives, they could do it on My Documents), then the system would be, for the average user, unbreakable.

The LTSP looks MUCH more efficient and secure than my school's Citrix system. Unfortunate that they only used it so teachers didn't have to learn something besides Microsoft Office (and I'll admit, Office can be powerful and useful in class). Citrix is inefficient, emulating every copy of windows logged on, and insecure, as client flash drives can run executables, allowing LCP to brute force, etc etc.

Thanks for linking the LTSP though, I may email the administrator about the idea.
