  1. Re:Satan's Span of Control ? on Vatican Warns That Internet Promotes Satanism · · Score: 1

    >you can't argue that pron, piracy etc. has become way more frequent, convenient and anonymously available since the advent of the internet.

Yes I can. pron, piracy and etc? How about VHS, maybe? internet might have tape media + sneakernet on convenient but maybe not. putting the tape in and pressing dub was alot easier then the transcode / container format mess the internet has brought us. you want to find something maybe you can find a download that is real, maybe not, maybe it is in the right format, maybe you need a new codec.

a brick of 99c VHS tapes with cash at the store across town was alot more anonymous then downloading from a website when the RIAA can sue for logs. SO that is 2/3? What you got left?

Frequent? Pirating stuff was pretty easy on tape. So maybe. but prolly more a case of scapegoat is scapegoat.

  2. Re:nothing new.... or is it? on Amazon Releases Cloud-Based Music Service · · Score: 1

I can see from the screenshots this thing is plastered with advertisments urging me to "buy additional storage" and "shop for this artist". I don't need a garish music player urging me to make more purchases.

I have never listened to a radio stream nor played an online game for any extended period of time that has not been effected negatively at some point by lag.

Even if this thing was not rehashed ideas (another music player+store) plastered with advertisments (it is) and impervious to lag (it is'nt) it still is not very interesting to me.

  3. Re:It's cloud-based alright on Amazon Releases Cloud-Based Music Service · · Score: 2

this is not what it does though. from the looks of it this will allow you to play songs you buy from amazon in a special player that is totally locked down. in this respect it is pretty much exactly like itunes except you can only listen to music you buy from the amazon cloud in the amazon cloud player. player comes in android, mac, and windows flavors. chances are the studios are on board, just liek that are with amazon selling mp3s and what not.

  4. nothing new.... or is it? on Amazon Releases Cloud-Based Music Service · · Score: 2

If this "personal disk drive in the cloud" is just marketoid bullshit keyword stuffing to describe a system that allows you to download stuff you have licensed from the internet then it is just another online music store. If they are actually streaming the music you licensed to you then it will have the same flaws as all other streaming music services like shoutcast and pandora - your music will be interrupted by lag and/or be riddled with obtrusive advertisements, and probably will only be accessable on approved players. However there is a 3rd prospect, that being Amazon Cloud Drive is a bit of both.

In any case, it is not very interesting if you ask me.

Using a modern thin client is pretty much like using 50s era time-sharing systems, with the exception that the modern variation slaves inferrior microprocessors to a more powerful cluster of devices, instead of slaving pure IO devices to said systems. The question then becomes if you are carrying a device that is in itself more powerful then the systems in use even 5 or 10 years ago, what advantage does connecting to 'the cloud' holds over the advancements in computing technology that originally allowed us to move away from this computing model?

Fundamentally the issue is data security and usage control. There is no advantage to the end user, only the content providers who maintain the system.

I agree the system used in morrowind and oblivion could use improvement. Ideally the system would take into account not just primary skills but secondary skills as well and scale encounters instead based on character power, build, inventory equipment, etc.

That was the plot of an old animated series called "Space Battleship Yamato". In it the titular vessel was equipped with the massivly powerful "Wave Motion Cannon", a weapon so powerful it can vapourise an entire fleet of enemy ships with one shot; however, it takes 5 minutes to charge before firing and requires all non-essential power systems be deactivated, leaving the ship powerless and adrift until the weapon is ready.

Every episode ended exactly the same, the crew of the space battleship having exhausted every avaliable solution to the problem panicing for a very tense 5 minutes before the weapon fires. Then someone says a corny one liner and the credits roll.

The f-22 is the stupid one. the f-35 is the one that works.

You are right about the Osprey but something needs to be done about the 30 year old 4th gen fighters. The mission-capable rate for US fighter jets is sharply declining. Only so many flights before skin corrosion, bulkhead cracks and landing gear wear, etc make the craft unsafe, and retrofitting an old design means you are unable to take full advantage of new technologies. The longer the US goes without a replacement the worse off it gets. The only way to increase the longitivity of the airframe is by reducing the annual flying-hours alloted to the craft; spend less times flying missions and more time sitting on the ground.

And besides when was ignoring a UN mandate cause for invasion? Doesnt the US ignore UN mandates all the time?

What about the UN mandates against torture that the US ignores? Oh right, the US just redefines the act as something other then torture and does it anyway. What about the geneva conventions restricting the use of nuclear weapons? Oh, DU ammo is not nuclear, because it uses "intert" nuclear material.
