I am really considering putting Ubuntu on my Desktop. I think I have enough knowledge about it now (and I can run World of Warcraft via Wine =P) and I was going to use Ubuntu. Personally, $20 a year isn't that bad. If there will still be a free version, thats fine too. Windows costs what, $300 for XP Pro Full, and $200 for the upgrade version. I can go 10 years at $20 a year for Ubuntu for the price on an upgrade for Windows. I really like its free, but since I am used to paying a lot for an OS, a little money isn't such a bad thing. Though Linux is meant to be free, its hard to comtinue to operate on just donations. Plus, Ubuntu is awesome, they ship free CDs to people who want them. What a great service for free.

I have been to my state capital before and watched the process for laws being passed. Its rediculous. You have a bunch of people wandering all around, some practicing their golf putt, others just day dreaming at the back wall with one person in the front, with a gavel in his hand belching out laws to pass or not to pass and you get a few people vote yes, and a few vote no. Its pitiful. I doubt they even hear whats going on. They are rich beyond means and could care less about Joe Schmoe because its Mr. Schmoe's taxes that make him richer.

  11. Don't Forget on OSS Not Ready for Prime Time in Education? · · Score: 1
Don't forget that many of the educational institutions do not allow their teachers full access to the computers they use. This requires technicians to be on site to take care of the mishaps that happen day to day. I would call myself very computer knowledable. I have used Linux, and not really cared for it, though it is getting better. I know Mac OS X quite well. But even we techs run into issues that we can't take care of. Then its time for the dreaded call to tech support. But with most OSS titles, there is no tech support. Sure, there are many forums to post on, but that takes time. If at teacher can't input grades or take attendance, that means headaches from all directions for the techs.

Oh, and don't forget that all the high up administrators for the districts are usually old. They don't even like computers let alone wanna use anything that doesn't have Windows or Pentium4 on it. If OSS software is to take hold in education, people familiar with OSS software and techs well voiced in OSS software need to be put in place. This just won't happen for a long while.

Will they (the university) be supplying a compliment of software to make the laptop useable in class? If not, then I would find another university to attend. Just another way for them to make students buy something for school. The books are expensive enough without making them buy software every semister because its the new version. I bet it looked good on paper though. Not to mention the fact that if the university tries to do everything on the laptop, what if someone's laptop goes down, is in the shop, breaks completely, then what??

Plus, I really wanted a tube. I am not sold on LCD and Plasma TVs. Too fragile for my taste.

  22. Windows on Linux vs. Windows for Schools? · · Score: 1

The school district I work for is significantly larger than yours is, but we do have machines that were designed for Win98. We have a large number of P2 333 with 96 or 128MB RAM. Even these machines can run WinXP Pro. The way to do it is get a WinXP worthy machine, install and set it up the way you want. Run the sysprep utility found on the WinXP disk (search microsoft.com for sysprep to get instructions if you don't already know how to do it) and use Norton Ghost to image the lower end machines. After the ghosting is done, just upgrade the drivers for your system. It works really well and extends the life of older machines. You will need to turn off the visual enhancements and try to keep the software low (Windows, Office and a few educational software titles), but if you know what you are doing, you can get the system to run just fine even though its well under WinXP's system requirements.

  25. B.S. on Tech Makes Working Harder · · Score: 1
That is just BS. Sure, maybe people that are computer stupid do less during the day. Or, maybe if all the secretaries would quit gossiping and get to work, more would get done. I work for a school district and when I have to make a trip to the district office, its is pathetic on how little work gets done. All you see and hear are little personal conversations about everything except work going on and no one at their desk no matter what time of the day it is.

I think less gets done because people realize that computers make work go faster. So they think they have more time during the day to e-mail friends, gossip, take a million bathroom/coffee breaks and lose track of time so when the deadline hits, they have little to nothing done and they blame it on technology.
