People are throwing "thought crime" around left and right as if it applied here. The woman wasn't thrown in pound-me-in-the-ass jail. She is allowed to get a new job (economy willing). She is allowed to vote. She doesn't need to register with local law enforcement when she moves. She was fired. Admittedly, in a free-market economy that doesn't mean she's exactly well-off. But it doesn't mean she's about to be caned.
While I appreciate a fast answer to an easy question, one of the joys of the internet is getting lost in the information flow. Looking up when a certain movie was released, then ending up reading about O-Bon festivals, not quite sure how the flow through the tubes took you there.
Oh well...I guess I could sleep for a change.
It's a really fun game. I'm only in World 7, but I look forward to the rest. My only problem has been when I tried to take it to a relative's house this past weekend. They're in one of the infamous dial-up bubbles all over the country, so they haven't bothered setting up wireless. The disk required a system update before it would play, so we couldn't play it. I scoured the box for a warning, expecting better from Nintendo, but couldn't find it.
I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. I saw Video Games Live during GenCon a few years ago. The music was great, but the host was a complete jerk. He called a young woman up on the stage for the crowd interaction and was all over her, pausing for a brief moment mid-rub to confirm she was 18. He trash-talked traditional classical music and those who enjoyed it. I guess some "hard-core" players would connect with his cocky attitude and general disregard for anyone who wasn't him, but I felt ostracized despite knowing all the games. Maybe they've changed hosts, but I couldn't call my particular evening there "cultured." I really prefered the Dear Friends concert.
I'll agree particularly with that last point. When my office forced an upgrade I found a couple quick functions that were probably always there but unnoticed before, which I eventually shared. It made it worth having to show the somewhat slower people how to save and print that first week.
I frequently use StumbleUpon and Bookmarks in Firefox. I'd be willing to give the ribbon a chance to see if it makes those more manageable. And if it doesn't...I'll turn it off.
I'm not buying Starcraft II and I'm pissing and moaning. I wonder about the Diablo III implications. If I can't play Diablo III with my sister over LAN, I probably won't bother. To be brutally honest, I hope a LANless Starcraft II fails so they get the picture and allow LAN for Diablo III.
In your scenario it hasn't helped the baking industry much, but the companies that manufacture and install the energy-efficient appliances and windows will get a significant boost, along with their suppliers. A dollar spent is still a dollar spent.
Does it matter in this study? Even if a kid was playing educational games all night, his grades would probably suffer since homework makes up a substantial portion.
How horribly conceited.
Do you need a thermometer every time you stir-fry something? Can you not manage to boil water without breaking out the candy thermometer? Why does an oven's dials have to be in celcius to bake bread? Why can't I use a meat thermometer in farenheit, so long as the number I'm looking for is still reached?
Just yesterday we had a severe weather drill and the pious woman on my floor threw a tantrum because her hand got dirty on the handrail in the stairwell. There is a construction crew on the floor above us and they didn't take the time to wash their hands before fleeing the imaginary tornado. The lives of 50 men meant nothing to her when compared to the fact that she had to go wash her hand now.
She will fight death tooth-and-nail. Not because she's afraid she's been an asshole. It's because she's saved and special. It doesn't matter if she leaves her family millions in medical bills and emotionally devestated from watching her decline. All that matters is her because God loves her.
I don't think it's a matter of ignorance; it's a matter of interests.
I don't want cable. I'm sure the shows are just dandy, and I'm missing out on things other enjoy, but I'd rather spend my time on my computer or playing games. Even if cable prices plunged sharply, I just don't see myself going for it. How is knowing the value of something relative to your usage of it ignorance?
I saw a GameStop employee doing this the right way last year. Some parents were in with their kids, and before ringing up the order he pointed out that one of the games grabbed of the rack was rated Mature and was violent. He'd have still let them buy it, but wanted to make sure they knew what was in the pile. The parents had the kids pick a different game.
Disclaimer: I saw the parents looking at the games the kids would hand them, but there was a rush of boxes exchanged right before check out. The parents were trying, but the kids slipped one past.
I've been playing WoW for a few years now, casually. I consider myself kind of a hard-core casual gamer. I take it easy, but I play lots.
I'm very confused about people claiming that there's no more grind. I beg to differ! There is an almost constant grind for profession items, especially since the expansion. Prices have gone sky-high. People who've spent the last few months doing dailies and raids with their level 70 characters are buying mats off the auction hall for their Death Knights, making it impossible for casual players to match the costs. So every time I log in with my 54 shaman, I run around looking for Thorium. Sometimes I do a quest on the side. This game is vastly different for the end-game players and the casual players, and it's painfully obvious here.
I find it telling that the two people I know who play the most watch TV while they play (unless they're in a raid). Obviously, I find some enjoyment in the game, having played for years and years, but I'm not going to pretend that it's more than it is. It's a way to play a game and spend time with friends near and far. If I get and I don't have someone to chat with, I'm not on more than 4 or 5 minutes. I'd rather play Harvest Moon and grind for turnips.
I went to one a few years ago at GenCon and found the host to be a prick, personifying all the bad stereotypes of a "hardcore gamer." I left feeling a little embarrassed about the whole thing. It didn't really compare to Dear Friends with regards to tone, which unfortuantely had a short run.
The music, though, was great. If they've adressed the host problems, I'd love to go again some time and take a few friends.
I'm sure it won't be enough to satisfy you, but the World Health Organization Report of 2000 showed that the US has the highest healthcare costs of all 191 member states, per capita. Also, we ranked 37th in performance. While that doesn't say that it's the least efficient, it isn't pretty, either. That may have changed some over the last 8 years, but I have my doubts it's changed much.
but social security benefits are specifically not based on poverty, and you stand to benefit from them as much as anyone else.
Actually, social security is projected to go bankrupt the year I turn 60. I'm jaded, but I pay it anyway. I can only hope I lose a few limbs and qualify for disability. Hopefully while out of the country so I don't go bankrupt from the medical bills. Go USA!
The sample size is substantially more than 4 people, though. I applaud your keeping us honest and making sure we all know the definitions, but the statistical differences probably aren't that great with a population this size. He was incorrect to say "definitionally," but that about half the people in the country are probably below average isn't so far off base as in your example.
My sister and I have an agreement. We can't complain to each other about the government if we didn't vote. If I skip in November, I have to be quiet and stew for the next four years.
We both lean towards blue but live in red states. So we make sure to vote so we can call and complain about how crazy everyone around us is.:)
To be fair, the story is still rather pointless. Sure, it may be interesting, but this is an MMORPG. Nothing I do will ever change anything. How many times will you kill Arthas before you realize that the story, while interesting, is as important as the flavor text on a Magic card? The story is pretty much just padding for the grind.
I do like a good story. But I don't keep re-reading the last 10 pages of a book over and over again hoping a purple will come flying out.

there's no cable between the two parts to smack you in the face when things get heated
Smacking myself in the face with the cable is how I keep myself humble.

If we tried to back the GDP of countries like the US, Canada, Russia, Europe, etc., with gold we'd have run out of the metal a long time ago.
Which is why I, like my telephone-sanitizing comrades, support a leaf-based economy.

You must not have seen the researcher's name. You'd better make it four hours.
Outlaw buying their cigars?

By this definition, every MMO is in perpetual beta. They can always patch it and change almost anything, and if you want to play, you have no choice.
News like this make me ashamed of my hobby in a way that even Barbie Horse Adventures couldn't manage.
