Seriously now, what is there to be different from? I'm an arabian who has been running linux since 1997, own a collection of star trek and star wars DVDs, build my own computer, read slashdot regulary, own a Palm T|T, hate MS, love open source, fascinated by space and science research, got my BS degree from a respectible american school, and on top of that does not agree with what happened in Sep/11.
Why is being an arabian muslim makes me any different than any geek anywhere else in the world?
One thing good about outlook is that it is able to sync the tasks / appointments categories from my palm. I couldnt get evolution 1.4 to sync the categories; has anyone managed to do so ?
I finally decided to give debian a spin after being a redhat user since 6.0 and slackware before that. I got the 7 CDs set of woody and off I go...
The installation wasnt as bad as I thought it would be but fear not the installation, fear the usability of this thing. The amount of hassle and long hours I spent to just *try* to configure this thing to my liking gave me flash backs of slackware 3.x. This thing is so outdated!! and I couldnt believe that there still some linux distro that is so hard to configure like the old slackware days!!. Redhat 9 is head over heels over this debian when it comes to useability.
I now truly appreciate Redhat, and decided that I will stick to it by upgrading to FEDORA.
I will give Debian a try again maybe sometime after several releases when they focus more on useability.
I know a number of people who are already shunning the name RedHat in favor of the other flavors.
One here. I just got Debian CDs to try them out for a possible replacements to my Redhat 9. I have been a redhat user since version 6.0 but this move made me think: Linux is made by the comminity for free, maybe the only distro that is going to last is the one also developed by the community for free. Fedora is establishing that, but I rather something more proven like Debian.
If Debian was good, then goodbye Redhat, it has been really fun.
Perhaps some collaboration between MPlayer and Xine should occur.
No. Having two different products means compitition. Compition means that we will have two good products that are always getting developed to be better than each other. The end user will have a "choice" between two great products instead of one slappy.
Simple boot scripts and config files, well-commented and quick to modify the init scripts are cleaner to me than that old BSD style scripts.
GNOME and KDE are much more responsive Responsiveness has nothing to do with the distribution. Talk about something you know please.
More stable? Only well-tested stuff I'm really sick of this stupid comment; It only shows your ignorance. The linux user is the one who choses to make his distro, whatever it is, stable and secure. The choice of packages you install is what determines it. It doesnt matter what you run if you dont keep updating your system, Slackware, Redhat, debian, even Windows XP.
Seriously, as a Linux user of five years and writer on the topic, I do have a clue what I'm talking about. I respect Red Hat and Debian, they do some good stuff and the former is ideal for newcomers, but that doesn't mean they're the best in every single area.
I respect Slackware too. Hell I learned linux on Slackware 3.2. I'm just really sick of those idiots who think that the only true linux is slackware.
If you're tired of all the frills in Red Hat, Mandrake and SuSE et al (good as those distros are), and want something clean, speedy and stable as hell, give this Slack a go.
What makes slackware cleaner, speedier, or more stable than Redhat, Suse, or Mandrake?
I think you slackware fanatics are still living in the dark ages when the only matured linux distribution used to be slackware. WAKE UP and see the real world. Redhat, Debian, SUSE, and Mandrake have long passed Slackware on all of these things you mentioned and more. Infact, your slackware is trying desperatley to catch up. (Just implemented a package management tool)
Well that wouldnt be a problem with me, ICQ, MSN, AIM, or Yahoo... whatever. However, the problem is with the people I want to message. How can you control what messanger client they use or like? Just because ICQ is the only network I can log in to, doesnt mean everyone I know must use ICQ as well. And lets face it, the majority of the world use windows with windows messanger clients, i.e MSN and Yahoo.
I'm afraid that soon we (Linux users) will find ourselves talking only to our selves on our GAIMs.
Dude, you can say that you like salckware and all, but to say other distros don't come "close" to slackware functionality and ease of use says one of two things: either you didnt try any other distro, or you are a blind.
Ease of use: do you think slackware is easier to use than mandrake or lindows ? Did you even see the slackware installer ?
Functionality: What features / functions does slackware has and other distros dont ? on the contrary think of how much features is slackware missing like a decent packaging system.
yes performance; forget about more features, forget about bugs hunting, I think these are up to an acceptable level to us now. What we need to focus on is making this baby FASTER. I recommended the browser to a windows user, after a few days I asked him how is it? he said he diched it because it is "way too slower than IE". I had to agree.
I advice the mozilla developers to start working heavily into getting mozilla to load faster and perform faster.
Alright... I know about this testing stuff and how long has woody been on but KDE 2.2 ? I mean come on, Redhat 7.3 was released before this one and it came with KDE 3.
This is supposedly a major upgrade (2.2 -> 3.0) you'd think the least one can get things like the latest desktops. Not all of us use Linux as servers only.
1st question: No
2nd question: No
3rd question: No

If you dont know, kuwait is a small country in the middle east located south of Iraq.
DSL in kuwait:
128 kbp $70/month
256 kbp $127/month
512 kbp $255/month

I just compiled 2.4.23 in Fedora core1 and succussfully booted it. However, when I try to run kde I get the following error:
cannot set up thread-local storage: kernel too old for thread-local storage support
Can anyone help solving this problem?

Fedora Core 1 is what was supposed to be Redhat 10. That is mature enough for me

How is mandrake doing financially now? are they still in that bankrupcy situation they used to be in?
the new redhat beta has been out for quiet sometime now. Now that Mandrake has released their new distro expect redhat to respond quickly with theirs.
Perhaps some collaboration between MPlayer and Xine should occur.

Can it run Linux?
A couch with Linux and a wireless 802.11b connection. This is what I have been waiting for all my life.
Crap message
I can brag to others: "My girlfriends cracks the voting system... lets see your big-breasted girl do that"

Pefection you say ?
Get a decent packaging system then we will start talking about the rest of the stupid things in slackware.

The idea is geeky ofcourse, but would a Linux based PDA really be useful like a Palm based one ?
I can't understand why would anyone buy a Linux based PDA. Plam OS has a huge base of software while Linux PDAs hardly has any.
Can anyone who has a Linux PDA share with us his experience with it. How useful is the thing ?
PERFORMANCE

Dude, which planet are you from ?
Finally.... a useable Linux. I'm running it right now and it is waaaaaaaaaay good.
I couldnt agree more.
.... java OS ?
s e/ coming_soon.htm
java OS ??? why in the world would I wanna exchange my PALM powered PDA with all the beautifull apps for a
on the other hand.. check out:

that is something intresting. You get a Phone/Palm pda with OS4.1/mp3 player/ and an expansion slot.
