If you could still be using that 386 you bought in the late 80s and be able to do everything you use your current computer for, would you have bought your current computer? Would they have made money from that? No. Look at Vista - everyone wants the newest thing when it comes out, sometimes they can't justify that hardware upgrade, though they really want it. Soon as Vista comes out and NEEDS that hardware upgrade (oh and you'll HAVE to be running Vista, don't ask me why, that's just what they keep telling me) now it's justified. Logic's there. People are used to getting those for free, they have been allowed to give them away for free and people know it. Taking them out of the OS now would be tough to explain unless some governent somewhere made them do it. Then it's just a matter of saying "Well, they made us do it there, so we're gonna do it here too os we don't get sued again." Furthermore, people are NOT used to integrated AV, the new graphics engine (can't think of the name of it because I honestly never cared) or WinFS. These have NEVER been freely distributed with the OS. Different logic. And yes, it's there.

  18. Re:Unspecified reasons? on No Anti-Virus in Vista · · Score: 0

Anyone ever stop to think, maybe they WANTED to get sued in several countries over antitrust issues? Maybe they purposely included many products in the OS which, at the time, they could not have sold, but wanted to make people aware of; and they did this to the extent that governments stepped in and put an end to it. Now there are quite a few people who want all this, once bundled, software and MS can say "We're not allowed to bundle it any more but you can still have it for $9.95USD/mo. Sorry, your country's govenrment says it has to be this way, we can't even offer it for free anymore. Our hands are tied." I mean, right now it's what, just IE and WMP that these countries are making a big fuss about, right? Next will be notepad, paint, what else? And, of course, every single application MS comes up with that should be part of the OS. Ever. The AV should be integrated (or at least bundled) but this is thier excuse to charge for it. I'm sure you'll be able to BUY the graphics engine (most likely subscribe to it for a few bucks a month) and probably the new filesystem (hrmm, think of the possibilities there!) shortly after the Vista launch. The thought of that 'rental' filesystem scares me... "Excuse me, Symantec, it seems your last payment for WinFS did not process. Your WinFS partitions will be inaccessable until you make another payment. Sorry, our payment processing systems are down at the moment and there is no ETA on repairing them." then a month later "Since it has taken so long for us to recieve a payment from you, your ability to subscribe to the WinFS filesystem has been revoked." Well then, every WinFS partitioned disk they have just became useless, no? Think. MS would do this. ESPECIALLY to a competitor.

I, personally, don't give a flying frig who submitted the story. I mean, I'm only a front page reader and have bad karms (BTW, please mod me up, I'm begging, I need the karma *wink wink*) so i'm sure the /. community is gonna take anything I say with a grain of salt but, really, if there's a story posted that catches my interest I gould give a large rodent's behind less who posted it.

Actually, another point I'd like to make right now. Karma; WTF does it take to get good karma here anyway? Of the three posts of mine which have actually been moderated, 2 were modded up (1 as +1, insightful and the other +1 with no reason given), 1 was modded down (-1, troll), leaving me an overall score of +1, higher than the 0 (neutral) I started with, yet I have lower karma. Makes no sense; bad karma should be any score LOWER than 0 if 0 is "neutral". (and I implore you all, after reading this post in its entirity, to take a moment to read through everything I've posted, including this there are only 9 posts to peruse, and if you can, moderate them as yo usee fit -- and I know, that's like asking for more -1, troll mods, I'll face that if that's all I get) But, getting back on topic and to the point I was trying to make, now that I've gotten my quasi-trollish rant out of the way, once your karma is marked as "Bad", even if it's because you were modded "-1, troll" for something that was MEANT to be funny (and your insightful rebuttal was ignored by those with modpoints), well, even your most well thought out, relevant, insightful and informative comments fall through the cracks. This is how it should be, perhaps, for users with scores
That said, yes, it is obvious to me why the post in question was modded "troll". I don't need to be told that, you don't need to point it out, I see why, I get it, I would likely have modded it that way as well, nobody needs to explain it in this case, whatever. I certainly should have put more thought and effort into that post. Then again, how many users with otherwise good karms have done similar things and been MODDED UP FOR IT? Because it was a first post and, well, here at /., sometimes we reward people for being jackasses just to get FP on a new story; I've seen it, and so have all of you so I see no need to find an example to back that up -- but I will if one is requested.

Ok, now that I've gone slightly off-topic, let me summarize. Who gives a flying frig who posted the story, if it's a good story, it's a good story, I'm sure many readers here are in sales and understand "if you through enough of them at the wall..." so get over yourself and quit posting this and that about the poster and keep your comments relating to the story; that's not so hard to do. And someone please tell me WTF is up with karma. Thank you.

And since I can't think of any other way these things will be mentioned in this thread, I'll take a further risk of being modded down for this post and go ahead and run through some of the more popular /. jokes below.

In soviet russia, karma whores you!

Ok, no more, I've gone too far. Whatever. Anyway, if you can't find anything insightful, informative, or at least funny to mod this up based on, go ahead and burn some mod points for the sections of this post which are off-topic; but please, give others a chance to read it and mod it up first.

Let me make it clear that there are MANY addictive things with an almost ZERO mortality rate (caffiene, anyone? marijuana, no proven deaths except, maybe, from stupid shit done while high. sex? Ok, maybe sex has a mortality rate, but again, lower than coke. Compulsive liars are addicts as well. The lie itself cannot be fatal. The reaction of the person hearing it can be.) Just because it has little or no mortality rate doesn't mean it's not addictive. If you start it and can't stop it, it's addictive.
