I Installed for the first time Ubuntu 3 days ago. I booted the live cd, clicked on install and 30 min later I had it up and running. There was little more to do than tell it to use all the drive space for the installation. My 6 yr old could have done that install. "certainly my 10 yr old could have" It was at least as easy as anything from MS I have ever installed. "I think easier for sure than an XP or Win98/2000 etc"
I'm a Gui type of person I love my games and while I'm not afraid of nor unable to do command line I find it a PITA "albeit a powerful pain in the ass" I do advanced windows support, imaging, automation, etc.
My Mother could have installed this with NO issues. Now I'm sure there'd be something down the road she'd have a question about. But what new user to windows has a clue? I finally "after being a RedHat 4.0 user way back when" See Linux as a reasonable alternative to MS operating systems. "except for gaming"
I believe the installation environment for Ubuntu was FAR better than my first win98 install, At least all the drivers were there "video/sound/lan"
I'm going to put it on as Dual boot; for the first time in 6 years I'll have something other than windows installed. I'm not a full convert I just have little reason to use an OS that can't play all the latest games and sadly it has almost as little support for that as Mac.
From my point of view it's "Linux" certainly come a long ways. Nothing is perfect and at this point with the major vendors "Amd/Intel/Dell/Lenovo/ supporting Linux it'll only be a little longer until major licensing support etc comes. "dvd/mp3 etc" I certainly would love to see games go back to OpenGL and away from DX. It would certainly make a full move to Linux based OS easier to swallow.
We use SUSE at work as we're a Novell environment. I've never installed SUSE. Ubuntu's the one I see as being a real replacement. Even if that is my weak ass gui using opinion:-]
I sometimes will avg from good providers 1MB per sec. If my calculations are correct I get 16GB per hour. 5 hours of max'd downloading would seem unfair to me. "I used at least 2 of those hours yesterday"
Of course i'm using your 90gb cap as a reference and I'm not a math wiz by any means. I pay for Comcast's game invasion and get 8mbit.
90GB is way low for what I do. I'm not much of a torrenter but I do craploads of gaming stuff from fileplanet and I'm pretty sure I've exceeded 90gb more than one month in a row over the last 5 years.
Between NetFlix, Fileplanet, Filefront, FileForum yada yada yada... I'm definately in the top 5% at least. maybe not the top 1% as I know warez-monkeys will download everything and have 4tb of space storing 0-day for 30 days. "idiots"
To date I've never received anything from Comcast except a hefty bill each month. My fingers are crossed.
I'm sure you are basing that on personal experience. However let me respond by saying May 28th I had a laptop with a bad heatsink-fan I called them and had an RMA for it in 15min.
I have gold support at Dell and rarely do I ever receive that quick of a call/solution.
Secondly my cousin who's laptop it is, was able to upgrade her warranty for 2 more years for 100.00 While this might not be cheap the cheapest I found that heatsink/fan was 65.00 According to their site the warranty extension was supposedly only available in the first month after you purchased laptop. She called and was assured she would be covered if she wanted to purchase it.
All that being said my experience with Acer has been good and I was able to talk to WELL TRAINED indian techs. Very good english and good understanding of what I said.
I have more faith in them now than I once did for a 399.00 laptop purchase.
If they treat everyone like they did us it would appear they at least care a wee-bit.
Didn't we read this the other day? China is busy cloning the I-phone?
http://www.ipodobserver.com/story/32618/ It seems to me Meizu already makes a darn fine alternative to the ipod. I'd like to see this here.
And just think of the lack of health issues.. No more skin cancer from that mean ol sun.. no more asthma because we're not breathing smog day in day out outside. Heck if we could just get that grocery delivery thing cheaper we'd never have to leave!
I agree with you for much of your statement. I'd further it by saying remove the drm.. and sell me 1 copy that includes multiple formats. One of the big selling points of this "HD technology blue and hd-dvd" Is their size is much larger than a standard dvd was. Let me buy a copy that has 3-4 different types of media on it. Freely movable "format shifted" at a reasonable price and you'll have a lifelong customer. Let me decide if I want to move those types of media to a new type in a few years as you are going to continually move forward. I should be able to as well without repurchasing everything again.
I know what i want makes too much sense and is a pipe dream but we can all wish.
Apparently I don't have the MS guide, I know it was available on the motorola dvr in some areas. However in the last 2-3 weeks apparently I have received an "upgrade? bah" to my system which now allows me to have to click an Extra step to get past their asinine commercial at the bottom of the screen while I am in the Guide. What a horrible fuckin design, as if they don't over-advertise their shit anyway. Oh Well.. It's not like I can get the same connectivity speed for the same price or less anywhere else and I do enjoy the dvr. Comcast still sucks.. but then they always have and I've just lived with it.
Yep, Last July I went over the highest allowed KWH trying to keep my house at 85F. I paid.33kwh for PG&E. My average bill is currently 403.00 a month. Because I have them average it out over the year. My July bill was over 950.00. Now you might think I have a huge house.. pool etc. This is a 4 bdrm 2 bath house that was built 70 years ago 1605sq ft. A good bit of the bill is because of the AC unit. I'm hoping like hell the new one makes the bills lower.. I'm about to die from em.
While I agree in theory that "most people" would like to see movies on a giant screen. I've been to a movie 1 time in 2006 and before that 1 time in 2005.. and prior to that I'ved averaged 2x a year or less. I'm the rare few I guess in that could give a shit if it's on a 40 foot or 40inch screen. I enjoy the movie if it's good either way. I have hdtv, and 1000w surround I really don't feel the need to spend an avg of 15-20.00 per person with drinks and popcorn to see a movie in that environment. The last time I went to Six Flags magic mountain I spent 20.00 per ticket, and probably 25.00 to eat that day and I can damn sure tell you I enjoyed that more than the "movie theater environment" I'd like to see spiderman 3 in a theater.. but the chances that I will are low. I cannot justify the expense right now. I grew up not going to movies and I will continue the trend as long as I'm alive. I'd pay 20.00 a movie if I could get it in my house the day it was released and then buy the dvd a few months later.. Hell Thats the exact distribution method I'd love to see.
There was a few things in Fable that would translate into Wii able games. Shoveling, fishing, swordfights.. chicken kicking? I think there are a LOT of things that haven't really been programmed yet that would really give the wii a well rounded set of games.
I used to work in a 10min quick lube. One of these up close cars was in frequently for oil changes. It looked pretty cool. Had these little cassette things that would play kitt's voice.
From the FWIW department:

They ALL point to ME. Yes that's right the universe revolves around little ol me.
I suggest Despair.com go to the movie section and watch the managerial videos. Those should set you up for success!

Would you like the pony with or without armament?

Senior Moment?
It it's too loud you're too.. wanna ride my bike?
Err um why did I click reply?
This has been pointed out here before. Neither Comcast nor any other ISP has common carrier status.
http://www.slyck.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=36623 this describes that no or almost no ISP's have Common Carrier Status.

Most slashdotters wouldn't be caught dead outside of the basement!
I guess we all now know how Fab Five Freddy got his name?
Well it'd record a swish and a flick. But you have to say Wingardium Levosia with a slight emphasis to an R sound.
Either that site is slashdotted or they are out of bandwidth.
Or perhaps I could pay her to play with my Wii....

Fixed it for you Oxyclean guy...they can kiss my Pimply butt.
I mean, Hey you could make up custom rules for what to do in case you are stranded on an island with only one game to take with you. etc

That's all well and good.. but the check box should be to USE the vista version. It should Not nor should it ever be the default.
I dunno, but I bet there's one near Uranus....
