Concerning P2P, I think it is unlikely that a permanent technical solution can ever be found to this pandemic. It is first and foremost a human issue. It might be a genetic issue as well. It would be interesting to see if there is a genetic connection between David Berkowitz, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, P2P users, and Swedes.

  3. Absolutely, Linux is NOT for end users on Is Linux Out of Touch With the Average User? · · Score: -1

Linux is definately out of touch with normal users. But before dwelving futher into the causes, I must give a big kudo to Ubuntu for being the one and only Linux distribution to really care about the user "experience". Now, other distributions have put on a pretty face too, but the rough edges start showing up in no time.

As a rule of thumbs, open source software sucks because of:
-Lack of testing, other than the most basic
    -Terrible interface
    -Non-existent or outdated/incomplete documentation
-As soon as a project grows a bit, lack of management

This is due to lack of resources, personal skills and also developer interest. An open source developer can be a great programmer, but if he's not interested in documenting the applications that he creates.. then we end up with the Ivory Tower paradigm that represents the Linux community so well.

So even if the Linux kernel is the best one on Earth (btw I think it's the worst modern kernel), it's really the pile of crap that runs on top that relegates Linux to operating vending machines and routers.

For years, Mac buyers were troubled with a terrible choice:

-Get the base Mac with a CD reader; or
-Pay $200 more for the superdrive.

Often, the so called superdrive was behind the technology curve compared to a $50 PC equivalent.

I noticed that Apple did away with the Superdrive for a little while since it became too pathetic a choice, even for its dedicated customers. It seems that the Blu-Ray drive is giving Apple another chance at screwing its customers by charging 1-2 thousand dollars extra for something that will likely become standard for PC's within the next year.

  9. Hardware that crashes on What is Open Source Hardware? · · Score: -1, Troll

We all know how open source software lacks in quality due to no testing. Open sourcing per say is not the problem. It is quite immaterial in fact.

The issue lies with what motivates the developper:

-Non-salaried: programming something is fun. Testing, documenting, and building a nice interface sucks...
-Salaried: Since the code is open, the only way to make money is by charging for support. So open source companies make sure to leave a few bugs here and there and the documentation confusing to keep the money wagon rolling.

Should we expect the same thing with open hardware? I think so, but support can be difficult with hardware since it's hard and expensive to perform updates. So it's probably just gonna suck.

    Successful proprietary companies include:
    -Apple
    -Microsoft
    -Nintendo

to name a few. Most Linux companies are failures, one way or another, with the exception of IBM which can use its multi-billion dollar strength to promote and support its linux branch. But even this may come at a price, if SCO wins! ...Just chimming in on the fallacies of open source...
