That doesn't jive with their goals of interoperability and unified DE, they would have to fork it. There'd probably be a massive flamewar to the likes of "I can't believe you KDE devs are grabbing my code and messing it up just so you can make look pretty with DE!" "Well, if you'd just made your code more compatible..." Etc. There are legitimate reasons.
CLI requires a substantially larger amount of working memory, long-term memory, and imagination than most humans care to use. Plus, you have to be good with a keyboard proper to get any speed out of it.
It's certainly useful, but for most of my everyday operations, the amount of effort (my memory and typing speed suck!) is inefficient. I still don't understand CLI-only types.
If they refuse to upgrade to the W2K series, are they really going to install and use a GNU/Linux OS variant?
Any reduction of vulnerabilities we can give these people (in this case: IE->FF) is worth it.
Based on separation of Church and State, the government should never have conferred benefits and administrative differences onto marriage to begin with; you do believe it is a religious matter, do you not? If so, it is none of the government's business.
If you believe that there is no separation of church and state or should not be, then you are theocratic like the terrorists. (And therefore, are no patriot.)
Otherwise you must abolish governmental involvement or allow gay marriage. Pick one.
I can't vote and I would deny my peers the ability to vote, if such a decision was ever put before me.
I understand many adults are stupid too, but kids haven't finished school(Social Studies classes in particular), and have not had the opportunity to be exposed to new ideas.
Quite simply, once commerce begins to adopt the technology, you can never know if a television is watching you while you watch it.
A camera is a little more obvious.
People HAVE been saying it, but it strikes the common ear as paranoia.
Have people who think Bush aspires to dictatorship ever considered a marketing department?
I don't give a rat's ass about your rights if you're going to violate mine, it's really as simple as that.
DRM and blank-CD tax are not rights at all. What is a legal "right" is not always a moral "right."
Perhaps a subset of computers should be sold on this philosophy. You could use a specialized Windows, or a Linux, or something.
This would be sold in that configuration at the store, with no hardware configuration difficulties, automatic updates, and all the apps Joe might need. E-mail, Web, Word Processing. That would be all.
If you don't let anything install or play with the settings other than the update (verifying would be the tough part), it should remain usable and not ruined for a long time.
Actually, pop3 and smtp are integrated into GMail (at no cost, of course), so you can use it from an app as well as gmail.com. I've setup evolution to regularly check my e-mail this way.
I'd just like to make a note that "System Settings" is available directly from the menu in Kubuntu, and does not open into Konqueror. As for customizing, try right-clicking anything or selecting from the app's settings menu, "Configure ".
I personally can't stand Gnome, but to each his own.
I agree, though this is where actual usability is different from some standard definitions. My configuration is very usable, and doesn't get between me and my apps, however in this case it's my personal usability I'm rating. Unfortunately, I can't rate other's success with this as they simply don't bother.
I suppose this means that most usability items are judged by their stock configurations, rather than what is possible. It must be what 'usability-experts' are paid for. I can't begin to count the number of times I've heard "But the button's supposed to be right there! You broke (appname)!"
Hmm, this gives me a new idea for tweaking...
You're not alone. I've found the extensive customization ability of KDE makes using it the most "user-friendly" and addictive computer experience I've ever had. OSX, GNOME, and MSDE became rather aggravating afterward. I've been spoiled rotten.

In my experience, the end-user doesn't notice the effects after they hit the button, so such a method might work... Hm...
DRM is not convenient.
*(For citizens.)

It's actually more expensive to seek the death penalty due to the methodology of our legal system than it is to kill said convicts.
This is the general attitude of persons my age regarding technology, sadly.
Does it really take that much effort to have a good name?
Despite what some think, beauty and functionality are not mutually exclusive objectives.
"...but sir, the marketing model isn't bad, it's those DAMN PIRATES!"
Clutter the internet?
Well, most of these pages have a negative value. They're not worth the 15kB they were transfered on.

With a sane and informed user, it's certainly possible. (Win2000/XP, of course.)

Have you tried Kubuntu? All the advantages of Ubuntu with a solid KDE. My current system.
I was under the impression the many commercial institutions back up their financial & such data to tape.

Black & White 2, now that is a game I wish I had tried before buying...

Isn't this illegal/unconstitutional? I thought fair use allowed me to make backups.
