I imagine they are looking to target wireless internet as a replacement for cable/fiber/etc. I imagine the infrastructure is a good bit cheaper to service an area compared to running cable. And given people's solid hatred of cable companies, they might be able to make some serious inroads. Isn't that part of the reason they've stopped rolling out FIOS?
Now to seriously compete, they're going to have to seriously bump data allowances because I don't give two shits how fast your data is if I'm paying $100/month for never to no capacity.
I read a little bit about it (not enough to be an expert though). Suppose we put the facility indoors to remove the impact to a native species. Now we have deal with the water and feed the fish but we aren't disruptive to the surrounding aquatic environments.
Couldn't we filter the water through aquatic plantlife (say algae and other things) to clean it up and reoxygenate it? The plant life could then feed smaller fish who then become food for the target fish. If we were to produce more algae than necessary, it could also be used to produce biofuels (provided the process becomes cost competitive). How many fish could be produced annually at something the size of a couple Olympic pools (say like some existing abandoned facilities anywhere)? I really don't know. Just kind of spitballing an idea.
How feasible would it be to seriously upscale fish farming efforts to large numbers for the stocks people want to eat? And is the taste about the same?
We'll probably just end up like the UK, France, and other colonial powers. A shell of their former selves, far less influential in the world than we'd like, and think far more highly of ourselves than is merited. But unlike those nations, we'll be a race to the bottom.
I would speculate that were the US to collapse, power would regionally centralize but I'm not 100% how or what (perhaps something like the Southeast, New England, West Coast, and Flyover with Alaska getting seized by Canada and/or Russia and Hawaii doing its own thing. I would expect a quick reduction in the 300+ million to 200 million as skilled or wealthy folks leave.
Traffic cops, insurance agents, replacement cars needed. The list goes on.
The reality is companies are making the investment regardless. Once it's here, these jobs are dead anyways. Now I would be curious if some of these trucking jobs transition to security gigs as I would imagine independent self driving trucks would make for great robbery targets.
And the reality is that more automation will continue to reduce jobs. Some sectors will still gain while others will not. I speculate that most needs for essential societal function will mostly be automated such that we really only need a small portion of the population employed. It will be interesting to see what happens to get there.
Ok but there are a number of languages spoken in Europe. The notion of learning German to work in Germany then having to learn French to live in France (say I want a job change down the road) somewhat daunting to many folks (but the obvious reality to do it). It's not impossible and if I was so driven I would do so. However it is a large barrier to entry compared to moving wherever within the US and putting my time elsewhere (though learning a new language is on there).
And it was presented as deaths > births being a problem. Japan has its problem too. I merely suggested one solution. Folks in their respective nations could get to making babies too.
Well technically the EU kinda is but there are currently problems with some of it.
Anyway, the US is so easy because English is the standard here and I would imagine that most people that speak more than one language includes English. I will say that EU immigration is somewhat more difficult only because I don't speak the native language in most countries and that will stop me from getting in most places except for the UK. A number of places I glanced at required it so I couldn't apply for those jobs. But I don't know how one would go about fixing it.
To me, that's a sign people want to watch whatever content and there's stupid bullshit in the way of making it a reality.
You'd think that's a sign that we'd just make all content universally available all at once so everyone can enjoy it and discuss it with likeminded people. But there are too many vested interests making that implausible. Sigh.
I wonder if companies would willingly pull their products off the shelves, sit back, and wait with crossed arms. Would Apple release the newest iPhone everywhere but New York just to watch voters squirm and demand it be fixed? Samsung and Galaxy whatever? Or would they cave just because it's a huge market?
I doubt they have the true resolve to follow through.
Honestly, I'm willing to bet that a large number of gun fatalities in the country (neglecting the 2/3 that are suicides - which will require serious efforts in mental health but likely aren't entirely preventable) are through gang related drug violence. And I say bet because there's no easy means to study the data as the NRA got Republicans to deny the CDC sufficient funding.
Legalizing marijuana would likely alleviate some of the gang violence as one element of the black market is hurt. With this being available, we might see reduction in demand for other drugs as well. This will also lower the amount of mass shootings in some places based on how bookkeeping is done.
I don't think there's any serious way of stopping someone(s) from doing harm to people if they are properly motivated. Car, improvised explosives, knive/machete, etc. I suppose the body counts may be lower but that doesn't stop the existence of violence out of the blue.
I will contend that having grown up in the country where guns are commonplace, there is a lot less violence compared to major cities. I think that if we are able to find the means to improve the quality of life of people, the level of violent crime may also be reduced. I've never read about rich people mugging or carjacking people (of course it is more likely done through other non-violent means). But no one seems to have a solution on how to fix poverty. Currently American social programs encourage some people to have more kids they neglect and companies (alleged job creators) aren't creating many well paying blue collar jobs.
It's not just truck drivers. There are a lot of jobs we lose or significantly reduce due to autonomous driving.
Perhaps we can't get trucks fully autonomous in the early phases so we'll have "citymasters" who basically pilot them around the cities. Regardless, many cities among popular trucking routes will no longer have drivers needing to rest along them so those hotels will take hits. We might even need less trucks since you can get higher utilization out of the existing ones you have. Accidents are lessened so we need less claims adjusters and traffic cops. Injuries from auto accidents will go down as well - which should help cut medical expenses.
It might increase the need for truck security to prevent a Fast/Furious truck robbing scheme. Who knows.
Wouldn't that make more sense? Basically one company is responsible for building and maintaining the infrastructure as well as pitching upgrades to the municipality. Anyone that wants to offer service is welcome to come in and do so. There's an access fee that's a part of your bill (or just in the service) and that's it. Are there any technical problems that prevent it or it is just all political bs?
Time in my car is spent going from A to B. Any other idea is just stupid.
You want a concept car? Give me one that drives itself everywhere and gets good mileage whether it be gas or electric. If I want to connect or share experiences, I have devices already capable of doing it.
Bank away around 10% for me. Then Musk the rest. I would figure out what problem I wanted to solve and see who's leading the charge. Make sure there's money to make it happen.
I'd go with printable organs and invest in research there.
I was simply giving you the perspective of people I know that like him.
I was planning on voting for Sanders unless he's clearly out and then would have to figure out what Republican I would vote for in the primary. Not a lot of good options.
But the completely baffling thing to me is that there are actually droves of people in the US that not only support Trump
Trump is the one guy that's not saying political speak and is not afraid to mince words. I think a lot of people are sick and tired of hearing politicians just dance around issues and since he has no desire to do so, that makes him popular. That is a pretty appealing proposition even to me - though I would likely never vote for Trump.
Yep. College sports is a bubble that's quickly going to pop. And if the NFL created a minor league for talent development, they could easily get a lot of the profits when all those kids that are pretend students can be full time athletes on a salary and people cut back on college ball.
Kind of. If I don't have to do any homework to understand who people are in the movies, that's fine. But if I need to watch all of Agents of Shield, Agent Carter, and the Arrow to understand some particular plot in a movie, I'm going to quit coming out.
After Thor 2, Ant Man is the only other Marvel movie I skipped paying for. I might catch it on TV but I just don't care.
We just don't have the will to really go after companies for hiring illegal immigrants. Neither party does and just lets it happen. Do that and demand for labor will go up significantly. Wages will go up for certain professions and people will take those jobs. It'll work itself out naturally if we actually cared about enforcing immigration laws.
As it will continue to prove itself capable of doing most jobs (top to bottom), what do we do with all the people that can't find work? My dad's opinion was to kill off the useless people. Funny how he thought my opinion of killing off all the individuals that 65+ monstrous to balance the budget.
Abusive pimps and johns would quickly find themselves in jail as sex workers are able to go to the police and report crimes against them. The need for pimps would also decrease as likeminded sex workers could form houses of business with security personnel. Or others make clients go through more thorough screening while they work as private contractors.
It would also be harder to spread disease as you could make licensed sex workers go through regular STD screening.
You could also put a vice tax on services similar to alcohol or tobacco.
I also don't believe that only damaged women engage in sex work. You don't have to like the profession but I think those individuals that choose to engage in it shouldn't be punished for it. Carlin made the point "Selling is legal. Fucking is legal. So why isn't selling fucking legal?"

Yea but how else are people who are miserable in their own lives going to get some level of validation? Other people just come second to that.
"Look at this crazy thing that came into my life!"

Thank you. First thing I spent this morning googling to fix.

Boomers outvote millennials.
