It's worse then that. Even for the ones who do send it in, they get to keep your dollar for a period of time and do they pay you interest on your dollar? Heh heh....no way. Rebates are ripoffs. Also, explain to me how it takes 6-8 weeks to cut a check? Is this because they do it in bulk? Would it not be more efficient to process them as soon as they recieve them?
As much as Eugenia Loli-Queru has nutty ideas, I happen to agree with her. If Open Source developers, especially the ones who wokr for companies, need to look at waht the users are saying and if they aren't going to develop it, at least come up with a reason why. I know I know, that's not the way Open Source is supposed to work...well...yeah, your right. The thing is, users especially non technical ones do have a point as well. Open Source needs to grow up a little bit. Now that the cool stuff has been worked on or already has lots of developers working on it, the boring stuff needs to be worked on too. Telling a user to submit code is ridiculous. I agree with someone else that a Bugzilla for feature requests is needed and that should be the place for users to communicate what they want. That should be the place for developers, new and old, to go and find some ideas besides their own. For every developers one idea, two of the users ones should be worked on. The users do have to use it and Eugenia is right...most users have no use for the source and could care less....they just want what they want.
CENTRINO IS NOT A PROCESSOR! The Pentium-M is the processor and Centrino is the WHOLE package.....chipset, Wireless-G and other parts make whe whole of a Centrino laptop. Everyone may refer to Centrino as a processor, but that does not mean it's right!
Why do we post this once a year? READ THIS: Writing tax software is so boring, there likely will never be a Open Source tax software package....ever. First off, what if there's a serious bug in the version your using? At least you have some kind of legal recourse if the software really borks up. Like I said, it's boring dry stuff and as most Open Source developers do it for fun, it's just isn't going to happen.
Filing online has other things associated with it. I am not sure of it now, but I know in the past the web filing companies only processed those who could file witha EZ form. I have filled out 1040 since I was about 22. The long form gave me the best deductions of any of them.
For free as in beer software, I still swear by Tax Act. Where they did have a brief stint of sending spam, they have gotten better at that and we'll use that to print of the forms and mail them in or pay them for the electronic filing.
Ohio is historical for things like this. One other item is they want you to pay a use tax on anything you buy over the internet or even by just driving over the border (common for cig smokers since Ohio raised their Cig Tax). They collect this when you fill a income tax form, yet they dont tell you how they know you bought that laptop in Kentucky or over the internet. The thing is, they can't. It's a pointless law.
One other stupid thing they are doing here in OH is they want to charge parking at State Parks. 5 per day or a pass for 25 that let's you park at any park. I believe they charge out of staters more. Yep....just make people NOT want to come to your little used State Park.
Ohio's governor is so bad for you politically if your a republican, that GW did not want to even be seen with him.
I can see being fired for a lewd picture taken in the workplace. I can see being fired for revealing a hot new product on the web. I can see being fired if you revealed other corporate secrets on your blog but I cannot see why the Queen of the Sky was fired. First off, the pictures on the blog don't even reveal to me that she worked for Delta. So what that she showed a bit of cleavage. I have seen more cleavage when the attendent was serving my drink! Maybe we do need to revisit the first amendment. It should be allowed for you to state your opinion of your boss on your web page....just don't reveal his name!;)
Wouldn't you already pay sales tax on a computer in the UK?? I know it's not the same as your TV tax thing but would that not be the same? Woudl it not be more efficient to just put a tax on the ISP bill?
Yeah what is WITH that? Paramount must be smoking drugs to think these DVD's will sell. I love it, and will probably buy them, eventually, but now...sheesh they are damn pricey. I can get the WHOLE SERIES of Buck Rogers on DVD for under 50 at Walmart. Season 1 of TOS is 99 bucks. That season isn't even as long as some other shows. $100 per season for DVD's is highway robbery. Leave the damn making of crap off the thing and give me the shows cheap. Don't spend millions making some 3d Animated menus (while nice, they are hardly necessary). Give me a basic DVD I can pop in my DVD Player/Laptop and enjoy a old episode while I eat some popcorn.
OSX is what I am most proficient with. When I want to do something where the GUI is not powerful enough like downloading a file and move it from one place to another on a regular basis as well as other things you can have cron do for you on a regular basis, you have BASH, Applescript and anything Linux can run. When I want to edit a video for my family, I use iLife '05 or Final Cut Pro. When I need to type a document, I can do it with Word. It has all the best things of UNIX wrapped with a purty GUI. What more can I ask for?
This reminds me of the Box from the mid to late 90's. It was a Music TV channel, like MTV, but all they played was music videos. You can pay for your video to be NEXT if there was nothign playing or your selection would just queue up. The ones who used this service were predominantly black or white urban youths. There was any video you can believe on it, but the one that I always remember playing 50 times a day was Sir-Mix-Alot's Baby got Back. Only caught that when surfing the channels. People will pay for the dumbest things. I paid for ring tones, but I won't any more. I just thought...this is stupid. Same goes for any GIN app on verizion (although the Accuweather app is MUY useful).
Also, one point I may add....there's no use for Microsoft to do such a thing because it's ALREADY been done. DSL(Damn Small Linux) is a very useful Linux distro that runs under QEMU off of a USB Thumb drive. It also fits everything, Linux Kernel, Bash, X windows a browser....most of what you'd like in 50 MB. Linux not being useful running on top of Windows? I use this all of the time at work. Have it and my SSH keys for the server on the key and if I am in someone's office and need to log into the server, I pop it in, boot it up and SSH in and take care of the problem right then and there. When I am done, I just yank the key out...no need to shut QEMU down because after it boots, everything is on a ram disk. Close out QEMU and the person's PC I borrowed is untouched. John Dvorak was good at this stuff back when we were all limping along with 286's. He know's diddly squat now and I wish PC Magazine would hire someone else.
How about it's BETTER than the original. In almost every way. None of the reusing the same Viper effect 500 times per episode and plots that are thought provoking (like the whole human looking cylon deal). It is the best scifi on TV right now and in some ways better than alot of the scifi from the 1980's.
I was about to say the same thing. E17 has been coming for us mere mortals who can't compile for, what now, 5 years? Frankly I have better things to do then to download shit code from cvs that is not commented and programmed under a load caffiene and just TRY to get the damn thing compiled. EFM. E17, evas and all of that are damn cool, but shit...I don't wqant a redefinition of the desktop necessarily. I like the idea of e17, but I am waiting to get it in a deb or rpm that i can install.
To the few who say they got free WiFi from thier neighbors....if they know about it, thats one thing. If they don't, that's another. Just because you spot a open WiFi port does not mean it's yours to use. If anything, I'd figure out where it is and let the owner be aware that their WiFi is wide open and anyone can use thier net connection for various things, legal and not legal.
OK....one hit on the shields and your sheilds are down to 50 percent? Did they underestimate the enemy that much? I agree, sometimes you must shoot the heck out of the ship, but sometimes the Enterprise should do some butt kicking rather then get it's ass handed to them. All too often did I see them go from no damage to tons in one shot. Makes shields kind of pointless.
I don't care what anyone says even JMS. I personally think if there's enough intrest, and if Paramount decides to jump, I think JMS would even re-consider. Paramount is just giving it a rest because Berman and crew that are the current keepers of Star Trek have no frickin idea what to do. They have SO lost sight of what Star Trek is supposed to be that even if they gave it the 2 year rest they are saying, they will still create another steaming pile of goo.
No, I don't think there's a loss of intrest in Star Trek. the only reason their seems to be is we have not been given something even remotely similar to Star Trek (Enterprise was so different and so bad.....the only reason it was Star Trek was because it had Vulcans, Romulan's and Klingons in it....). The NX-01 is so small scale to what we're used to....the gradioise in scale Enterprise NCC-1701-A-E's were what we WANTED to see. HUGE ships capable of not only exploration, but of defending itself. Why is it that from ther tail end of TNG onward the Federation routinely got thier asses handed to them? In any case, it's more then about the ship. It's about the people. The Best of Both Worlds episodes was some of the best trek there was with Commander Shelby and Riker trying to get Picard back from the Borg. Encounter at Farpoint was so much better of a start then the forgettable episode Enterprise started with. If we actually HAD a good trek series though, it woud likely not be good by our standards now though. There's too much at stake. They gotta try and make trek something many people would like. Unfortunately, that makes it a lousy series. Case in point, a friend of mine who is not a big fan of SciFi religiously watched Enterprise while I lost interest somewhere around 1st season. If I remember right, I caught myself many times watching TNG repeats on the old TNN network!:D Anyway, give me soemthing we can be proud of. Something to compete with Battlestar. I bet if NBC DOES pick up BSG, then maybe, just maybe, Paramount may start working on a Trek series.
Your saying it's not important to be able to read and it not be on a CRT?? Computers CAN be used, but they should not be the focus because there's SO much reading outside of the LCD/CRT screen. The old learn to walk before you run thing comes into play here. I may be a bit old fashioned when it comes to this, but it's more important that he can read a book then a computer screen. I don't think tying them to a computer is going to help. BEING with them and helping them with the computer or the book....it's all the same really. U hust don't want people to learn only on the computer and then say I can't read it because it's not the same colors or not in the same program as that stuff I read on the computer at school.
Use technology sparingly. What has to happen is he has to learn without the help of a computer. Read stuff he's intrested to him/with him. If he's 18 and still can't read, maybe there's more wrong then meets the eye. My son is LD/ADD and the best thing we did was getting him involved with other kids his age. See if you can find other people his age that want to help. But a technology isn't always THE answer with this kind of deal I am afraid.
I see two sides of this. First, one problem I have with governments period now and even other organizations is that they continually try to push people to the web. When it snows, the local radio stations do not even read the closings on air anymore unless it's a brand new one. Then they only call it once. This is a problem. EVERYBODY frickin assumes oh just look it up on the web. Well, what if we don't HAVE or WANT a computer? I have computers and it's not a problem for me but others depend on the normal media channels for getting pertinent information about things like closings and the weather alerts. It takes 5 minutes to read them off. If you cover a larger area, then say we will read off for the metro area and go to our sister station in timbuktu to here your area. The point is a radio can be had for LESS then a dollar if you get a cheap one. A computer costs alot less. TV's cost less then a computer as well. At least the TV stations run a crawl. The radio is how we used to find out if we had a snow day when we were kids, It's still a very accessible form of media and it should not be abandoned jsut becauses it's easy fo ryou to remind people to check the web.
That was not even the government, but here's another example....the IRS....
It's well known the US government MUCH prefers electronic returns to paper ones. So much so taht you actually get your money earlier and without having to get a RAL. Yet there are STILL a significant amoun t of people who don't have and don't want computers. It's even been mention in some circles that the IRS should not accept or process paper tax returns. Again, this is a problem.
I frankly think free wifi isn't going to get low income folks anything if they can't get a computer anyway. If the government wants to put all this stuff on the web and have our interaction with them be always on the internet, then they must provide more then just free wifi....free computers. I don't see that happening. Until computers are so intrenched into society that even the lowest income can afford one, then we must still have the old avenues open.
I see this is a good idea, but I frankly would nto want my tax dollars spent on a section of society who can't even afford the device they need to use it anyway. It's almost like putting a free wifi network in a 3rd world country where they don't even have phones. Why waste our tax dollars on something that won't be used.
One other way I think is bad when they governments start going this way is the government could then censor and CONTROL what we see. This one reason is another reason I don't see free muni wifi working. We don't like the government SPYING on us.
Should they not be punished? I wish I could punish the users who forget their password on a monthly or weekly basis. I wish I could. It's about time people remember things like passwords. Sure, have a mechanisim for revoering access to the system should you forget it, but man some people forget on a daily basis. Imagine if you forgot to do something like take the fries out of the fryer of you were working flippin burgers. Man you'd burn the place down! If your in a place that you have to log in to a computer system an dyou can't remember your password....wow. I don't know what to say. Sure it happens sometimes, but some users I have come across just don't get it.
In a proper implementation of a LDAP setup, you'd ideally have ALL servers authenticating through LDAP. That's the only way it would really save time. So what I said is true...if you do it right.
I just can't get behind LDAP. The concept is cool, but the security risk is just too much for me. Doesn't everyone remember the bitching we all did about Microsoft pusing Passport? Is a LDAP server any different?
Yeah but I see no one PUSHING the Cylon religion or any other for that matter on you when watching BSG and you know WAY before you go into The Passion that it's about Jesus and if you don't, then your living under a rock and have been all of your life!
BSG is a scifi TV show. Religion, like it or not, is a huge part of alot of people's lives on this planet. Even if your not religious, you can enjoy BSG. If it was truly pushing religion on you or you feel that way, then DON'T WATCH IT! You ever see the poster about The Passion? It's obvious, to me, that the image on the poster is of the beaten Son of God, Jesus, whatever you want to call him. If you see it and say ooh that's gross or you throw up and then say....let's watch it anyway....well, that's your problem. GEESH! Some people just has a huge problem exercising their regular person remote pushing abilities or the ability to THINK FOR THEMSELVES! And it sure isn't the people who are excited to watch BSG or The Passion.
