Recent grad, no loans? Well either you're a lucky bastard or you forgot to mention that one big 15 year loan.

I am also curious as to how much of a pay-cut you're talking about, I think that is highly relevant. Without disclosing the actual amounts you could have provided a percentage. I mean if you were going from 55k to 50k it wouldn't be a big deal given your current situation, however if you were going from 55k to 30k, I could see where this would be a dilemma.

If you don't watch a lot of TV, and the local cable company is unwilling to sell Internet access to those who aren't cable TV customers, then you can't get cable Internet access.

if this happens you better ask for the rep's boss on the other end of the line because they will sell you just road runner and no tv. Many cable companies try to bully people into signing up for cable tv along with their roadrunner, but you don't have to have both. If it was actual policy to have buy both time warner would be in the same boat as microsoft with their bundling issues. However, they simply try to make people think that they need to buy tv to get internet, but when you ask around and talk to enough supervisors at your local cable company you will find that this is a lie.

I disagree with the author having the Google beta products in the list. Simply because a product doesn't change from beta to actual release for a while doesn't necessarily make it vaporware. Gmail has been implementing new features and improving ever since it was initially released as a 'beta'. I think I would file it under vaporware, if we kept reading slashdot posts about an upcoming mail service by Google only to never see anything. Also Google tends to use the term 'beta' quite loosely.

If they weren't patenting their software I would be more upset. While you may disagree with the software patent system in the US, the fact is it exists, and all of your competitors are patenting their software. So if the company you worked for did not get patents, they would get destroyed. Until the patent system changes, you have to PATENT EVERYTHING to cover your own ass if nothing else. Even if you don't plan on suing for infringement, still get patents!

  9. Re:Price Fixing? on Pay-to Play and the Tiered Internet · · Score: 1

It doesn't sound like they are going to work together necessarily to come up with the prices they will charge, but with the pricing structure they will use. In other words it doesn't matter if one company charges $10/gb and another charges $5/gb, what they are trying to do is all charge $n/gb. If only one company did this nobody would use that ISP. So they all want to try and change policy together. It's all bullshit to me, but I doubt it's considered price fixing.

  24. This could be good for some on Google Working on Desktop Linux · · Score: 1

This could be good for growing the number of Linux users out there. The only reason I say that is because there are a lot of people out there who aren't complete nerds, and don't know much of anything about Linux, but they are heavy internet users and enjoy computing in general. This audience might not be brave enough to try and install a Linux distro on their own for fear that they'll screw something up. However if there was a link to install a flavor of Linux on Google.com it might tempt them. Furthermore this demographic might be more likely to trust a large company that they've heard of when it comes to their OS, i.e. Microsoft, Google..... whereas they have never heard of mandrake, red hat, ubuntu, or whatever. Now obviously I'm not saying that expert users are going to go install this because they trust Google, you could probably argue the exact opposite, but I do think that these sort of wannabe geeks might try installing Linux if it was provided through a known site to them.

I just installed the toolbar and it went well, I for one like the send to Gmail feature. I have however noticed some issues which I hope they change before finalizing this release. The first is that it adds 8 items into the IE context menu with no way to customize which items are there. I personally don't have any desire to access any of these features from the context menu and I would prefer to clean them up out of my context menu. Similarly I would like to remove 'Blogger' and 'SMS' from the Send to drop-down menu because I will never use them.
