I have not had a chance to take a look at sled, but I remember my first thoughts of SuSE 9- those being, 'wow, do i need 73 programs for writing one word doc?' This was back before Ubuntu was very well known, and SuSE was the leader in ease of migration, so I had considered trying to switch my parents. I just didnt think they would be able to handle so much at once.
Also, I think the end user should not have to use the command line. (...here comes the flame...) As much as I think any self respecting geek should be able to survive without the everyday comforts of his GUI, it is unreasonable to expect everyone to be capable. Now, before I get a slew of 'everyone should be able to handle the terminal', consider this: Not everyone that should be able to drive can replace a hose on their engine. And the terminal is scary to many end users, especially ones that only mail and read a gossip rag online. Until you can really get everything automated, Linux will not be a viable alternative for everyone.

A Look at IPTV

· Score: 2, Interesting
There is only one arena where quasi-interactive items are good: sports.
As an example I offer up the multi-screen view that many satellite providers are offering- a screen for 3 games, with live scores/tickers for the other games around the league in an easy to read format. This made for an incredible Sunday experience at my buddy Chris' this past football season. We used the big screen to watch the best game at the time (last 10 minutes of a close game, etc.) and pulled the 32" screen out of the bedroom to keep an eye on the rest.
Oddly, this made keeping up with the various games more of a social event, as one person couldn't watch all at once. Ultimately, this became a much more social event, to the point where the wives and girlfriends would attend. Oops, I digress.
Ultimately, this was a neat combination of traditional live feed and internet feeds that made for a really pleasant experience. Most implementations are not so great. The 'learn more' bubbles that pop up in tv/movies should be only allowed on Discovery type channels, where the viewer obviously wants to learn about a subject and isnt trying to gain an 'experience'. Just MHO.
Fox may be a memory hog, but I have not seen it to be out of line in most modern systems. Plus, I get really low useage when i turn off all the extensions i have added to it for customizing.
And I cannot emphasize enough how great it is for my parents. By switching them to Fox and Bird, I have stopped my monthy trip up to remove all new spyware/viruses... now I just go for dinner. That gets an A+ in my book.
This is about responsible programming/working in general. I don't think it really has a damn thing to do with cancer compared to retirement/other death/going to jail.
How are we going to justify our problem with illegal aliens now?
Now, before you flamebait me, seriously, the fact that they do crummy jobs is the main argument for why many people think we should be 'nice/fair' to the illegals... you know, so they can suck up our tax dollars.
Toxic. Carcinogen. Mutagen. Corrosive, causes burns to skin and eyes. Lachrymator. Harmful by inhalation, ingestion and through skin absorption. Long term exposure may affect CNS.
File that one in the 'Stuff I really didn't want to know' file.
Honestly, that is pretty informative, in the I-wanna-pee-my-pants kinda way.
That most certainly does work, although its a balancing act. You need really high octane gas if you want to put enough styrofoam inside it to make it really sticky but still burn. Really, you could do the same with gas and any flammable yet sticky substance (although its hard to get large quantities of superglue...). Vaseline works too, if you can get the two to emulsify.
I think I will just let this analogy die gracefully here without getting into an argument over what the sun's 'uptime' could be construed as. I dont know, normally I would banter over til Kingdom Come... maybe I am sick.
Yes, but the Sun has a *much* longer uptime, not to mention that any direct attacks on the the Sun's hardware lead to utter burnination of the attacker (Gates has tried to replicate this, but the goat sacrifice didn't work correctly).
This is not to say the Sun is without its flaws. It has been known to be susceptable to DoS attacks by the Moon which, oddly, are considered 'pretty flippin sweet' by most of the Sun's users.
In light (no pun intended, sorry) of this, I think you may want to reconsider your analogy......
And yet it's not a crime to send these people credit card applications. Hello debt slavery!
Although I think the practice is deplorable, it should be legal. Nobody forced him to borrow his past money, and nobody is forcing him now either. You cannot blame a hardware store for selling a rope a man uses to hang himself, nor (I hope) would you want to.
I think hiring movers would be cheaper than anyting a military contractor ever produced.
Also, if moving in the Baltimore area, there is a chance you will find the one armed moving man I had when i was there (I forget the moving companies name). Now, given it was one beefy arm (think Trogdor on this one) but I though the movers must had been playing a joke on me. So I go down to the truck to make sure everything is read, and I came back up to see him hauling my three seater couch out with his one ginormous arm. See the sig for the proper reaction to witnessing such an occurance.....
Google is still censoring, just moving the logs out of the country.
Would Google's absence make things any better in China? I honestly don't think so. And they are at least doing their best to protect Chinese citizens, unlike Yahoo. Sure, it sucks that the Chinese government sucks, but I don't think Google has gone evil empire just for doing what the government says they have to to set up shop.
I think that is the key issue. The Chinese may only be marginally better for having Google, but at least it's something. Using the argument that Google is wrong for failing to disobey the government is the same as saying that every American tourist that goes to Beijing is wrong for not evangelizing democracy on the street. They are not evil, they just don't want to get thrown in jail.
Weak attempts at irony don't make up for not paying attention to the key issues - just my opinion.
Just because you don't like it, doesn't make it an invalid argument. I don't think its a good position for any company to be in, but I think Google is taking the challenge as best as could be asked. They do not deserve the bad wrap this community gives them, as if they are enjoying the fact they have to censor. They have said many times that they intend to comply to the law in its strictist sense and no further, and this move is proof that they are making cood on that promise.
I don't think any amount of programming can turn off the 'chompy' part of the shark. Much like Pac-Man, you can steer him around, but you can't keep him from eating everything in his path.
I wonder if the new hacker rage will to be to boost a shark. That would make for some interesting vacations...
How many people do you know that are murdered in a public theater? Thats a pretty thin arguement. Plus, it takes 30 seconds to get out of a theater, due to the public exit laws. Your logic does not hold water.

Yeah, but in that case I would prefer to use a Shark!
If I have to get that on land, I will use the bear holding a shark!
Any kid knows that getting up is easy, but getting down is much harder. How have they faired on that?
Although I think its a valid art form, I would be a little scared to see the 'fashion pre-show'...

Last I checked, heating styrofoam let off some pretty nasty gasses... Is this really the whiz-bang solution we were hoping for?

Maybe I'm just a prick, but I am okay with a fool and his money being soon parted.
Seriously though, do we need (another) electric ping pong? Forest Gump and the Chinese players aside, I thought ping-pong was lazy enough already.
Although I think the practice is deplorable, it should be legal. Nobody forced him to borrow his past money, and nobody is forcing him now either. You cannot blame a hardware store for selling a rope a man uses to hang himself, nor (I hope) would you want to.
Who cares? This puts my one step closer to getting a real life Mechanostrider and further breaking down the barrier between the real world and WoW.

Can somebody please post the text? The proxy at work is keeping me down.
Or the party that can single-handly get stuff done right now? Were the seats reversed, the cash would be turning blue, I assure you.

Oh, wait. Now that Google is big like MS, there is nothing they can do to get the approval of this community.
I wonder if the new hacker rage will to be to boost a shark. That would make for some interesting vacations...
