  1. Re:Natural selection on Crocodiles With Frickin' Magnets Attached to Their Heads · · Score: 1

Saying it is due to habitat loss is not cavalier nor does it imply that any species are considered inconvenient. Its more precise than simply saying "due to humans", although that is an accurate statement. Humans cause the habitat loss, the habitat loss causes the croc decline.

They don't shoot the nuisance crocs because American crocs (Crocodylus acutus) are federally and Florida-state endangered. There are only like 1500-2k of them left in the US, although there are more in Central America.

  4. ESPN's on crack on ESPN's Play To Make ISPs Pay · · Score: 2, Informative

They have in the past few years tried to push their website to be more video oriented, setting it up to be similar to their flagship Sports Center program, where the sports news isn't as much read, but delivered as on TV. They recently redesigned their website to make the video content an even more integral part of how they deliver sports news. What they don't understand is that some (many?) people don't want it that way. I quit watching their SC stuff on TV for the most part when the fluff really started to pile up. It simply takes too long to get to the point of the story.

When I'm looking for news on the web, even sports news, I want the important stuff immediately. I can get that much faster skimming through a story than watching a few minutes of unimportant filler video. Their website is fine when I want to see a replay of an amazing play or something, but if I want the straight dope, I don't want to sit through a video; I want to read about it. So, I go to sports illustrated and other sites to get news, rarely visiting espn anymore. Its weird, because when I was 1st started really using the internet back in 96-97 or so, espn.com was one of the sites I visited most, but it hasn't been that way in a few years.

  5. "Nationwide coverage" on WISPS Mean Cable and DSL Aren't the Only Choices · · Score: 3, Informative

That blurb in the summary about showing their "nationwide coverage" makes this seem a lot more widely available than it really is. As the image in the linked article show, 750k sq mi isn't shit, particularly when the primary areas this purports to service, those who live out in the boonies, are barely covered at all. Good to know you can get this kind of service in such remote areas as Sacramento, Ca, Dallas, Tx, Atlanta, Ga, and Chicago, Il. Further, as stated above, the submitter and article author owns a fricking ISP that provides WiFi in Wyoming. This is the worst kind of misleading advertising masquerading as news on Slashdot.

I never played the old Fallouts, so no big loss for me!

Actually, that's a mistake. The 1st Fallout is one of the greatest games of all time. The 2nd isn't too shabby, either. This FO3 iteration doesn't share a lot in common with either of those - its more like a post-apoc Oblivion mod. Fun, but not really Fallout. Pick up the 1st 2 games pretty cheap, head over to nma-fallout.com and look for any patches or mods that might help you get started (the 2nd in particular had some bugs that were fixed). If you don't mind the old graphics and like in depth turn-based RPG action, dark humor and critical decision making, you won't regret it.

Although you are generally correct, not all the press was suckered in. The NY Times BITS blog mentioned those same concerns.

But the numbers do little to tell us how good (or bad) Amazon's season really was. The company didn't disclose whether shoppers bought more or fewer high-priced items than in previous years or whether discounts ate into profit margins. It didn't disclose revenue or even the total volume of products it shipped throughout the holiday season.

What's more, as consumers do more and more of their shopping online, where Amazon is the leading retailer, a "record" season at Amazon is hardly surprising. Amazon has claimed that its holidays were the "best ever" or "busiest ever" every year since at least 2002.

While E3 was king for a long time, the people there screwed up and PAX is just too good to let them back in. The ship sailed on E3 and it ain't comin back.

The thing you have to realise is that most women just want a "listener" when they're feeling emotional. As long as you give occasional signs that you are paying attention, they'll believe you were "listening" more than if you actually try to have a real conversation with them. They don't want answers, they just want someone to be there. So talking to a distressed teenage girl is one of the easiest tests you could get.
