I'm not sure why you are preaching security and recommending NoScript.

NoScript is a bandage solution. It offers no real Security or Privacy. If anything, I feel that Adblock Plus does more to protect you... without breaking the internet.

Yes. We do need better security in JavaScript, I completely agree... but NoScript is NOT the answer.

NoScript exclaims to be the best security feature in the world.... but think about it like this:

    - You are using Firefox 3 with NoScript
    - You are browsing around the net with default settings
    - You come across a page that has some nifty features you want to give a try, but oops! You need Javascript.
    - You decide to Enable JS on the page for a temporary session (or whatever it's called)
    - Site contains some form of malware and infects your computer. ... how did NoScript protect you? If you answer honestly, it didn't.

What we need is on-the-fly analysing of code to determine if it may potentially be insecure or malware encrusted. If this were implemented right (although I know it would be quite difficult), it should look for external scripts and ask to block them if they don't come from a trusted site. It should also check for overflows or things that may crash your browser and warn you (this is semi implemented -- if the script goes off it's rocker Firefox will tell you it's about to freeze/crash). And so on and so forth...

I am not that kind of programmer... if I was I'd have started on a plugin ages ago.
Needless to say I am a web developer and the only real JS I use is within custom content management systems.

As an aside: Just this past Thursday (Aug. 28th) was our 3 years together. I organized a night in a nice hotel in 'The City' (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) and purchased a Promise Ring. Not an Engagement Ring... just a Promise Ring. It cost me about 2/3 of a weeks salary (needless to say I make about $800/week). The new Provincial Gov't appears to be selling it and making use of this natural resource (which is now worth a fortune) whereas previous Provincial Gov't had some ridiculous rules and regulations to companies buying/selling SK oil.
I understood to a point... but their (major) demands were that they had to be SK owned companies. No companies from other provinces or even the U.S. could come and buy it from us.

The AB Gov't decided years ago that they would let anyone come and drill the oil and just pay a nice big tax to export it. Their plan was to get out of debt with the Federal Gov't in 10 years... they did it in 3. They are the only province that does not have a Provincial Goods/Service Tax. All while little ol' SK was sitting here on top of more oil than AB.

Now the rules have changed I think and we are doing as AB is... but I don't remember. Politics bore me... although I do understand the importance of keeping up. ... and that's my story.

Sure, people need to make money. That's fine. I found my niche, and I make a good living.

That being said, I also contribute to a few open source projects and am in the process of preparing my projects (including my money-maker) for release under the GNU GPL. Essentially it's a web CMS platform... I run some private servers and build sites/e-stores/etc for local businesses. There's a few projects where I cannot release specific parts of the code (built as modules for easy separation) as I've promised exclusivity for those specific projects (nothing signed as I live in a relatively small demographic -- trust is more important here than a fancy contract).

I feel that if I release my code for free, everybody that uses it will get something out of it. Wether it be a functional website, a chance to make a bit of cash off it or a chance to learn some new tricks I've used in the code... I attract a following that helps with testing and bug fixing... everybody benefits. I'll still make money doing what I'm doing. I don't see how I could lose money by releasing it as my market is businesses that don't have the time or patience to deal with it... As well, who better to hire to use the code to make something for you than the original developer?

Worst comes to worst, people don't use my code. Best case scenario, everybody uses and benefits from it.
