Of course I am not going to stick my key a door in the middle of my yard that looks like my front door. Likewise I am not going to be tricked by a fake yahoo login when I expected an email message. The problem is changing the public's perception of the login/passwd pair. I am perfectly happy to store all my information on a trust-worthy company's server, because I have confidance that I will not be duped.
Yahoo does this sort of thing already. You can store your bookmarks on their servers, and then using Y!Companion, you can retreive the bookmarks from any computer (as long as you are logged into yahoo). Works well. First off you don't have your girlfriend seeing your bookmarks (unless she can login as you), and you get them everywhere. You don't get the "don't load porn at work" feature, but you can easily put the porn links inside a directory, inside another directory, so that it doesn't show up on cursory glances.
Is SourceForge the new GeoCities? The only thing at the MonoLogo page is the front page with one screenshot. There is nothing checked into cvs, as far as I'm concerned the project is completely made up, and the screenshot faked.
Here's what I want:
* not just the ability to implant images, but also to extract them
* something that reads my eye muscles and knows where my eyes are pointed
Then every time I look in the lower right corner of my FOV I would see a super-imposed clock. Everytime I looked in the lower left corner of my FOV I would start or stop recording video to the computer. I'm sure I could come up with useful functions for the upper corners, maybe some sort of zoom, or super-imposed edge detection. Then I want a couple buttons easily accessable to navigate a super-imposed menu, to play back recorded video, snapshots, etc.
I would be willing to pay more then $100k for this, and would gladly be a beta tester.
The problem with that, is that will cost slashdot a lot more bandwidth, and nobody is buying subscriptions anyway. IMO we need a distributated solution to solve a distributated problem. Say there were a browser plugin that added a special URI like sdtp://.... this plugin would search for an archive on some P2P network, and if none existed it would attempt to go to the site (creating an archive and sharing it). Then slashdot could save a setting where your URI's would be the caching ones or not.
I have never seen so many BWM's and Lexuses in one area. I have a Russian coworker, and when he first moved to the valley and was looking for an apartment, he decided on one because the parking lot was full of BWM's and Lexuses, he figured they had to be nice. He was wrong.
There should be a less popular service that just posts yesterday's slashdot articles, so as to get around the slashdot effect. I don't mind reading stories one day late:)
Lots of people say to band together with the others getting sued, or to use places like ALCU or EFF to help. I suggest biting the bullet and fighting it, and then after you win, suing the US Government for all the fees incurred in fighting the suit. It is after their fault since they gave out a faulty patent.
Yeah, yeah everyone has said, but really, how often do you think Bill thinks about buying a country? I don't really think he thinks about spending his money extravegantly. He's already said that he's *only* giving his children $1M or something, and that the rest of his money is going to charity.
Oh god can we be any more stereo-typical here? How many kids that grow up in Minneapolis, Chicago, Kansas City, or St. Louis have even *seen* a combine in real life?
Check out Atollo, it's new building "toy", and it's got some compatiblity with Legos. Instead of bricks they have what are called "Brokits" that allow cool new ways to connect pieces. Look here for a description of the different ways to connect the two Brokits.
I finished college in '99. I had a problem long about the end of my jr year. I didn't really have any CS courses left for my last year, and I didn't really feel any smarter. Ever since I was 7 I had wanted to be a programmer, now with all of my CS education effectively done I was worried about my goals. You see I had been so focused on CS my entire life that now that I felt the goal was achieved I didn't know what to do.
I had a good friend who assured me that new goals would pop up, but it is hard when you have always been looking at one goal. So I finished my last year, concentrating on my other major (Philosphy) and on having fun.
My first job out of college was not the best, writing code to communicate between a sparc and an encryptor for satelite communication, but I didn't stop looking. In college I had wanted to write games, but now in the workforce I was giving that idea up. I started to be more interested in the web, and so I thought about working at a web company. As luck may have it I was regularly playing ultimate frisbee with a bunch of people from Yahoo!. When I noticed a couple bugs in their games, I asked after the ultimate game if anyone worked on Y!Games. I told them about the bugs, and I asked for an interview. Now, 20 months and 6 games later here I am, happy.
My advice is, do the dirty and unexciting work, but always keep your eyes open to other possibilities.
You can always go the ego booster route. My business cards say, "distributor of justice". One of my coworker's says, "supream leader". My roommate has a couple sets, "angry villager #3", "master of the universe"
On a related thing to your story. My friend worked for a telemarketer that did long distance phone service, the company name was "Long Distance" so that made people think that they still had AT&T or whatever. Their speaches also made it sound like they were somehow part of the person's current long distance carrier. It was all very ugly, and he quit 'cause he felt he was lieing to people.
