The analogy is more like Honda buying the Ferrari company and allowing them to continue building the same cars.
It won't work that way for long. Dell, in his ever long quest to cut costs and increase profits, will be looking at Aleinware and ways to implemnt his strategy. GM tried the same thing with Saturn and eventually they had to move the car to the standard platform and ruin a good car in the process. Pre 1994, the Saturns were great. I just see Dell doing the same thing to AW - I REALLY hope I'm wrong!!!!
I've spent three months looking for a new job. So many of them have extremely specific requirements, so specific that there is no way I could even be considered. So now I've left the field. I spent the last 20 years not really liking my jobs and not realizing it.
Sorry about what's happened. I'm in the same boat, only it was longer. I think you're right about leaving the profession - not because of you, but becuase of state of the industry.
After a few months of looking, I started hearing (second hand) that "if I was any good, I wouldn't have been out of work for so long." I started thinking that, maybe, they were right - after over ten years of being in the field. I'm thinking of starting a non-IT realated business.
Why not have a doctor's office with a few nurses, a video setup, and some nice Philippine doctors on the other end.
It was in the Wall Street Journal a few months ago where insurance companies are sending patients for non-emergency surgury over to India. The quality of care is actually superiror to the US because the patients get more one on one care, they can stay longer in the hospital, the doctors are American trained, and after the hospital, the insurance company does mind if you spend another week on the beach, and it's a third of the cost of US care - oh, yeah, you can bring someone with you - on them!
Lawyers are being recruited in India too. The Indian legal system is also based on English common law. The lawyers over their don't demand big offices - (the article said that if an Indian kid can't make it as an Engiineer, then a doctor, he'll have to settle for being a lawyer). So what's ahppening? Legal socuments are being emailed to India and Indian Lawyers are going over them and sending them back.
So, no one is "safe" from globalisation!
If your job is to work behind a computer, your job can be sent anywhere in the world.
Nothing...I was just (I guess poorly! Doh!) pointing out the hypocracy of the folks who are against the "Fair Tax" because of it's regressiveness ( even though there's a provision for a rebate to poor folks) and yet, they're perfectly happy to let the lotteries go on.
Yes, I agree, lotteries are completely voluntary, whereas, taxes are forcibly taken.
I hate it when I'm unable to get my point across. I guess that's why I don't make my living as an essayist!;-)
Moreover, I feel I must point out that naming your proposal the "FairTax" rather than the "National Sales Tax" is political demagoguery at its worst. This is without considering the merits of the proposal.
I agree with that statement and it did bother me that the authors of the bill (HR 25) had to call it the "Fair Tax Act", but hey, these same people named the "PATRIOT" act. I am for the tax, BTW. But I think it's worse that a regressive tax like lotteries go completely unchalleged by the same folks who are against HR 25. And what's even worse is that the lotteries are advertised and give the poor folks who are the primary purchasers the false hope that these crooked games (the payout vs odds is completely unfair) will get them a better life.
I think it's also this perceived liberal vs. conservative, us vs. them, or the "bipartisanship" of America. As soon as a viewpoint is labeled "liberal" or "conservative", it immediately polarizes many people. But when you actually dig down into the base issue, beyond the hyperpole and mindless rhetoric, I usually see some common ground - a big swath of it.
It's the "sound bite" media that's really doing us in. And "they", the media, are doing it because that's where the money is. There's no profit in being rational, careful, insightful, and just using common sense. Sensationalism has overtaken the media. Trying to get the issues past that, well, is impossible. Let's face it, folks want the sensationlized version. They want to feel superior to the "stupid" people who have a different opinion from theirs.
Dude, it's not worth arguing with those folks. They've never actually talked to those folks. I did. And did I get an earfull! As far as they're concerned we Westeners should mind our own business. They get pissed because, as far as they're concerned, we don't want them to cut their rain forests down, we don't want them working at our factories over there, and we don't want them to do anything to make a better living. The grandparents don't realize that if these folks aren't working in those "sweat shops", they'll be cutting down their rain forests or something else that's far worse. And sometimes, paying them remotely close to a western wage will disrupt the local economy.
For example, Intel, IIRC, started paying some of their workers a much better wage than normal 3rd world wages. It was so good, the local physicians gave up their practices to work at the INtel plant. So, the locals lost all of their medical care because Intel decided ( to shut up the sanctimonious white sub-urban liberal arts college students) to pay a better wage.
Those folks above really need to see the big picture. Those folks know what to do and they'll do it in their own time - their way. We need to respect that.
Why not? Humor is the best way of dealing with the ugliness in the World - especially with things that are beyond our control (yeah, like not buying their products will make a difference when there are millions of folks who don't give a shit and buy it.). That's why there's so much comedy and humor around death. It's the folks who have the attitude of "It's not funny! Don't laugh!" who really worry me and who I stay away from.
"And all 6 billion people in the world cannot be thought workers."
Why not?
Because about 5 billion are using most of their thinking ability just to sustain themselves. And it's only going to get worse as the Earth's populstion increases and more and more resources are taxed to their limits. And no, I don't believe "technology", "advances", or any other sooth saying (cop-out) predictions will be able to rescue us. Saying so would be almost as foolish as saying that God will save us.
Is it illegal to resell your original copy of Windows?
I don't know, but with the required "call home" for many software packages, I'd be very hesitant to buy any software second hand. I'd be afraid that when I installed the second had software, it'd call home to activate and refuse to activate because there have been too many installs for that particular license.
This is a just business transaction. It happens all the time. If Gael Duval wants to, he can just create (yet) another distro that will abide by his Linux philosophy. How is this a tragedy or something bad - other than for him - maybe?
I don't understand why they always insist on designing wearable computers like this to work from the back of the wrist the same way a wristwatch is worn.
That's interesting. For me, the best place would be strapped to my penis.
You can pee and check email, it'll make it look bigger ( and square), and it's the best place for viewing porn!
Who would ever wear such a thing? It looks ridiculous. Completely style-free. The girls would laugh at you.
That's what it looks like to me. I was thinking it was maybe the size of one those diver's watches or something that big, but NOT as big as it is! I guess I've been slanted by "Dick Tracy". I guess that dates me too.
FTFA: But -- and this is a very big but -- newspapers will have to adapt as their readers demand news and sport on a variety of platforms: websites, iPods, mobile phones or laptops.
What I see happening is that information is being broken down more and more into sound bites and geared more towards the intended audience. For example, you'll hear a completely different take on a story say from Fox as you would from Salon.com. That's assuming they even cover the same stories all the time.
There's only a few folks who will actually want to read the whole story - whatever it might be. And there's even fewer media outlets that will come out and actually state their leanings. The only one that comes to mind is "The Economist" (they state quite often that they are "a conservative newspaper.").
I have one and it didn't do me any good. An MBA teaches you how to be a corporate drone. You'll notice that all of the great entrepreneurs, regardless of business area, DO NOT HAVE MBAs. They have street smarts, or a degree from the school of hard knocks. For example, in Jim Rogers book, "Investment Biker", he advises someone to take the money that they would spend on an MBA and start a business. In the first 6 months of business, even if they fail, they will learn more than they ever would in an MBA program.
Here's what I suggest to techies: if you really need to go to school to learn somehting, go for a certificate. Many B-Schools offer a certificate program where you just take the subjects that you're interested in without having to spend 2+ years getting a degree. Subjects I recomend: Stats, Economics, Accounting, Business Plan Writing, Finance - everything else is common sense, fluff and a way for a University to get more revenue.
Which brings up an interesting issue: get marketing folks involved with F/OSS?
Or, maybe an MBA project for one/.'ers who are going for that degree and publish the project on Freshmeat or something? Why not? I've never seen a F/OSS project that deals with the business side. Maybe it's time for that.
"Party happy long time boom boom belt" is in the top 20, right?
Also, they state that when they die they'll go to heaven and have 42 virgins.
I say, "Fuck That!" I want heaven to be filled with power tools, non-stop lumber, concrete, cars, computers, and all the tools I can use for eternity! And a really slutty chick who'll do ANYTHING!
Where the fuck am I going to have time to do 42 virgins, who don't know what the fuck they're doing and who probably want to "talk" after words?!? No Fucking Way!
Tools and sluts for me!!
Oh yeah! A really big fucking screened TV with every fucking channel - including non-stop pron!
I see a lot of posts saying, "Don't buy sight unseen!"
But, no one has suggested using Google maps/earth. That's what I would do even if I were buying locally.
I was once on a trainging flight and as I passed over this really expensive neighborhood, I saw a quarry not more than a few hundred yards away, tucked in a very heavily forested area. I'm sure after they spent mega$$ on their McMansions, they were probably surprised by the blasting and all of the trucks going by.
Now, I'd make sure there wasn't any surprises like that if I were buying a home.
From that movie, for those wondering. I saw it a few weeks ago, when I saw the title that was exactly my thoughts.
Corrected.
I knew what you meant and I'm sure 99% of the rest of us did too. I just think it's so sad and pathetic that there's a small minority of folks here on/. who have to bully others with innane grammatical and spilling corrections just to prove that they're smarter than others (or so they think) when it's just a posting on/. .
I have better things to do than spend all of my time making sure a posting on/. is publication perfact.

See: Diamond
Wouldn't that be something if we've evolved from bacteria that was orginally the cause of some cold/illness of life on another planet?

I'm thinking of writing a book about a Windows guy who disguises himself as a Mac user to see what it's like.
I call it: "Mac Like Me".
Sounds cool, huh?
This is a just business transaction. It happens all the time. If Gael Duval wants to, he can just create (yet) another distro that will abide by his Linux philosophy. How is this a tragedy or something bad - other than for him - maybe?
That explains all of those Perl books in that S&M shop I,err, accidently walk in to every other day.
I'm just curious, will the company also compensate the employees who are working more hours - even if they are coming in late?
I know, if you said something like this, they'd call you in and tell you "what a bad attitude you have." or that "you're not a team player."
Yeah, I'm bitter....fucking corps...
Yeah, I see your point and it would get in the way, now, wouldn't it? Ok, scratch that product idea off.
I'm going to work on my anal TV now.
In the dictionary, under juvenile, you'll see my picture!
