This kinda thinking is pervasive on all levels and taking over our society. Play it safe - play it safe. We have forgotten how to take risks in this country. Taking risks is vital for our future, and is what made this a great country. Instead we have become a fearful bunch of whiners and pussies.

But do you really want to cross that bridge? Not to mention having your name on the cops or some government shit list. Intimidation by those with power is a powerful .

With that said, Imagine the costs, headaches and risks to convert over an institution as large as a medical center that rely on thees mission-critical machines. Is Microsoft going to foot the bill? I think not. It's too bad M.S. does not understand that with its success comes responsibility to cater to, and not to cause headaches for, their customers they had for 20 years. Forcing people to change what works because they want to make money on a new OS has repercussions for others. Making older, but perfectly functioning hardware obsolete because the next new O.S. wont run on gets expensive. If it not broken, don't fix it. Hospitals and other institutions have better things to do than to play with the next cool O.S. like a home user can. Oh yea, btw, windows 7 sucks.

  11. XP still here on Microsoft Pulling the Plug On Windows XP In Three Years · · Score: 1

My father went to the hospital last month to our local medical center. I was rather suprized at something:
It's a rather high tech hospital, computers with large screens plastered everywhere. From the 6 large screen systems in the emergency room with patient data, to the Thinkpads hospital personnel roll around for patient intake, to the front desk and the nurses station computers and thin clients..

Every one of them was running Windows XP Pro. In all those computers, I did not see a single Vista or windows 7 system anywhere.
    Does that tell you something?
(BTW my father is ok :) )

  12. It's common on Have American Businesses Been Stranded By the MBAs? · · Score: 1

I worked as a technician for several computer stores in the past before I opened my own consulting company. 3 out of 4 were run by "Business men" or "Sales people" that had absolutely positively no clue how a computer worked or how to build or fix a computer, or to even use a computer. They were more clueless than most of our customers. One guy was a shoe salesman before he opened his computer shop. Yet another was a vacuum cleaner salesman. It was always funny to watch them stew in their own juices when a customer asked them a technical question.

  13. It's not just the cops. on Court Case To Test Legality of Recording the Police With Your Cell Phone · · Score: 1

But under the strict 'two-party notification' laws in Massachusetts, it's a crime to 'secretly record' audio communications unless 'all parties to such communication' have given their consent.

So the cops are (ab)using this law, however if I'm reading this correctly then I have the right to have anyone arrested recording me in public. Anyone could make a citizens arrest if they see they are being recorded under this law as well. (Including cops dash cams :) )
I wonder how that would stand up in court?

Well that's exactly what they don't want. It's more profitable to dismantle servers after a while and obsolete games so you buy new ones.
I think games are going to actually be more online dependent to support this business model. To the game maker it has many benefits:

Strong enforcement of DRM with constant patches, etc. ala Sony
Ability to add new content or tiers in which you must pay extra for.
To kill a game when they want your to buy something new.

With this new paradigm you will permanently own nothing.
    It makes perfect sense.
Just another example of companies having control over things you purchase after the fact.
