I liked it better in the 70's when all of "pop" science was preaching that we were headed for a mini ice age. This global warming "religeon" is just a little much; espicially since there seems to be so much politic-ing involved.
Now that something somewhere with this functionality will finally get wide exposure (slashdot is a great start) we can expect an OSS software package based on this to appear within a few months. Of course I'd prefer if GAIM was expanded to include this functionality.
Contrast this issue with that of the adoptation of IPV6. The ONLY way we will ever see IPV6 adoption is through a government mandate. IPV4 has way too much "inertia" for anything to supplant it. The same can be said of office applications. Try submitting your resume in anything but.txt or.doc (MS Word) format. NOBODY will be able to read it, believe me I tried sending mine in.pdf format and was told to "please send it in word". Once companies wishing to sell software to government are forced to support a common (and open) format then perhaps people will actually be able to choose the word processor they will use, otherwise they are locked in to what ever the dominate product (and it's proprietary format) are at the time.
Good theory but this is a WHOLE new chip that has only 8 pipes. The production costs of the bigger chip would be prohibitive to sell a product at the target price. ATI will respond in kind within the next 6 weeks.
The main problem with windows in-security is that there hasn't been a virus/worm attack bad enough to make people really look at alternatives. Lax building codes don't get addressed until a supermarket roof collapses and many people are injured/killed, the same is true for the computer world. If a worm was created that automatically nulled all sectors of a hard drive 4 hours after infection people would take notice and steps would be taken to either i) fix the problem ii) change the product that has the problem. I think MSFT is on pins and needles hoping that this never happens . It would be catastrophic if said worm ever did exist but that might be the only thing to get people to really take this seriously.

Don't worry everyone. As soon as the polititions realize that normal people will be upset for having to PAY for this it will disappear. Either that or everyone in New Mexico can just get a motorcycle!
The upcoming Sony PSP (Playstation Portable) will do all this AND play games. Of course it doesn't have an integrated hard drive but it can read those cute mini-dvds (or whatever Sony is calling them). I think the multimedia capabilities of the PSP has so far been overlooked by the high-tech press. This could be Sony's "silver bullet" and gateway into making the PSP + PS3 the "must have" combo for xmas 2005.
Actually all radeons that support two displays support dual vga. If you get a retail version it includes a DVI-->VGA dongle. This dongle isn't present in most OEM versions but can be ordered directly from ATI.
I've often wondered about the most space efficient way to manage computing power. I can only assume that 1u rackmount systems have the highest value of computing power per cm^3. Of course they are loud and hot, these nano-itx guys look to be fairly quiet/cool. I can just picture a borg-style cube of these tiny systems in my basement...
Your bike no doubt faster in the 1/4 mile as well. Costs only 2.5% of the 959 too. Motorcycles are the performance bargain of vehicles. There really is no comparison.

I've noticed that at movie theatres more people are using the "self service" kiosks than going up to the cashier/attendants for their movie tickets. The next thing will be automated refreshments (popcorn/soda). I'm certain that more and more automation will take place in the service industries. I have no idea on the timeline though. I though that we would be "cashless" by the early 2000s but it hasn't happened yet.
"It's a lot slower than MS Office, specially on Linux".
You've run MS-Office on Linux? It was faster? Have you tried it with one of the newer 2.5.x kernels, you may notice a speed increase.
This whole episode has turned into a big mess. NVDA seems to be the bad guy in all of this. Their DX-9 product was delayed and their existing products where only DX 8.0*. The benchmark heavily favours DX-9 parts and NVDA's existing lineup was/is getting smoked in the benchmark by it's main (only) competitor. They decided to go on the offensive and try to kill off this benchmark. The 30 person company that produces 3D Mark have stood their ground against the multi-billion dollar NVDA. NVDA instead of admitting that their Pixel Shader is quite slow when running against 2.0 specs insteads tries to decieve and FUD their way out of it. Looks like they got more than just some patents when they purchased 3DFX... Now they have painted themselves into a corner and how this will turn out is anyone's guess.
*DX8.1 has PS 1.4 which is actually much closer (AFAIK) to PS 2.0 than PS 1.3 (DX8).
I wonder when a graphics card company will have the GUTS to release a demo that can run on ALL hardware and not just their own. Of course the company in question would need to have hardware greatly advanced from whatever else was available. Perhaps ATI could have done this when the R9700 was launched???
For a high end GPU that is passively cooled you can look to the passively cooled Radeon 9700 Pro by Sapphire. Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro Ultimate Review Basically you get a leading edge card that generated NO NOISE. A dream come true!
Looks good... which distro installs on it? I mean with something that cool you wouldn't want to run "your Mother's OS" (tm) on it would you? It's too bad they aren't selling these *WITHOUT* a display, You could actually bring your own personal BEOWOLF cluster of these on trips etc.
Actually if you read up on XBox-Live there may be a fee of $10/month once your first year is over. Also MS has never ruled out extra fees for future games. So basically there is no "designed in" cost savings over the PS2 online model.
http://xbox.ign.com/articles/361/361526p1.html Extra fees are already being charged (will be charged upon release) of Phantasy Star Online for the XBox.
These little cars are all the rage in Asia as Bit Char-G (bit charge) and Europe as Compact Char-G. Check out http://www.blackadderhall.com/bitchar-g/index.html for the scoop.
I was just looking at Toms review and his 9000Pro makes due with only a passive heatsink. Anand otoh has a 9000pro with a fan. I'm a quiet pc kind of guy and am really interested in a modern, performant Graphics Card that does not generate noise. What is the story on this?
I'm very pleased that someone is finally serious about the PC noise problem. I have been able to get a fairly quiet pc by using an expesive quiet power supply and a "flower" heatsink fan combo. It would be nice to have more emphasis placed on the noise generated by all of the fans/hard drives/cd-dvd drives within a computer system.
I think Sony has the right idea in that they are just going to use the existing internet and just be another standard access point. Is MS still trying to circumvent the internet???

What we in the nerd world need is for SUN to bring out a low cost, small, quiet, reliable OPTERON/Athlon 64 box with their JAVA DESKTOP preinstalled.

Enough with this crap. NOBODY needs more than 16 bits! :-) All the same though how long has uSparc supported 64 bit. Is this really big news?
