if you do a "clean" install off of the DVD w/out formatting the drive, it just moves your old windows, documents and settings, and program files directories to windows.old and installs clean. This way you don't lose any data from XP, but don't have to worry about all the clutter of upgrading : you just grab the pieces you want and copy them over. I have done this on 4 win 7 installs, and it couldn't be easier. the Migsetup.exe wizard tool is another easy way to do this as a clean install but w/out losing data. I think the installer is top notch. My only request would be an "advanced" button to allow people to pick a little more granularity as to what packages are being installed. I have "ultimate" but I don't need/want media center, and other various pieces.

I had a person experience with this. It's probably a bit boring, but here goes.

I purchased about a year ago a LeadTek Geforce 6800 GT from Newegg.com After getting it and doing some benchmarks, i realized that somehow they had sent me some sort of wierd card...it was actually the equivalant of a 6800 GTS (it had memory running at a much lower clock speed than it should have been, and clearly didn't run at 'stock' GT speeds). I contacted newegg, they were very cool about it, and they refunded my money after I mailed it back to them.

I later wrote a review of the product along with the description of the problems that I had in the hopes that it could alert some people who may have been inadvertantly mis-sold a product like myself (Newegg had no idea how I had gotten this card) along with a actually glowing review of newegg for their customer service, but it was never added to the website. I tried a different version later, and it was also not added.

I can understand it to some extent, but I felt that in a way it's also just protecting their behind, and I felt like there should have been a way for me to warn other customers. After all, isn't that why we read reviews? Not just to look for the "5 STARS OMG IT RULES" reviews, but also the problems that people have? I know that's why I look at them. It is I think, a marginal business practice that I don't really agree with.

That doesn't mean people want to figure that out. I've had several people who i do on the side desktop support for me end up calling me later saying that they got their computer infected again, and go frustrated so they went and bought a new computer. but wait...PCs not only have emulators for every old console known to man, but also the entire back library of PC games that go back 15+ years! (granted, getting some of those DirectX 1 games to run anymore in windows XP is, uhm, DIFFICULT)

Sure it's harder to develop for a system that has infinite hardware combinations, but I think the variety is also the biggest strength of the PC gamers computer. PCs have the biggest archive of old games ever.

I guess this also goes to show that there are all kinds of PC gamers. Some don't need to upgrade their hardware every 6 months to be able to play the games they like. Some do. Consoles have a certain rigidity (which is reduced in modded xboxen) but that is attractive to some people as well. They are all solutions to bringing us, the consumer, entertainment in the form of glowing pixels. I doubt we'll see the ways that entertainment is brought to us reduced anytime in the near future.

I really think it depends on the 30 year old. Many of them grew up playing nintendo mario games and have a fondness in their heart for them.

Also, many people look past the name "mario" or the hype of the "mature" look on another system, and look beneath...for gameplay. In my experience many games with "mario" in their name have really fun play mechanics and expand on the existing genre of that type.

Examples : Mario Power Tennis, upcoming Mario Soccer, Super Smash Bros, Mario Golf etc.

Nintendo finds a medium people like...fighting games, sports games, etc, throw in some first party licences to attract fans, and then add in new and inventive gameplay. (crazy power shots, interactive environments, great 4 player action)

It's a formula that has kept me buying their stuff...but has probably made some gamers lose out on fantastic games because they just see "Mario" and are turned off. I don't really know what to say other than "it sucks to be you" i guess...but really, give some of these games a shot.

Some of their development groups (Camelot most specifically) has been making cool new inventive games with new content (only splashing the big names like Mario). They made Mario golf for the gamecube, but the gameboy advance version didn't have any of the mario characters and instead focused on your main guy (whatever you chose to name him) and used graphics similar to their awesome Golden Sun series.

Perhaps it's time to start pushing the old "tried and true" characters a little into the back, and trying their new game mechanics with new characters, but it's pretty easy to see why they use the recognizable ones...they want to sell more copies.

This 30 year old (well not quite, but almost) will still be buying Nintendo Revolution. I'll probably buy the others as well!

The reason they don't do it as a standard is probably cost. The best part about DVDs and CDs is their low cost. It's just a plastic disk with mylar glued to the top. We'd probably use domain policy to force this on, especially if there is a way to sort and collect this data on a central server, allowing us to use this as a troubleshooting and early warning system for computers that are having problems. We have a lot of sensitive customer information that I wouldn't want being sent to microsoft, so if we could just have the end point of the reports be us, I think that would be a useful tool.
