I took a photo of a tape dispenser with nothing but the table in background, it wasn't able to figure out it is a photo of a tape dispenser, it gave me a list of similar photos which had nothing at all to do with tape dispenser, there was even a photo of a swan.

I took a photo of a memory stick, it wasn't able to figure out what this is. Once again I got the "similar pictures" one of them was a photo of bees, nothing even close to memory stick.

I took a photo of the hand sanitizer, it recognized the Purell logo and read the text on the bottle. Taking a photo of the back of the bottle didn't result in any meaningful matches. Taking a photo of the bar code identified the product, but that's something I can already do with the barcode reader application.

It can read QR barcodes too. Nothing special, the barcode reader app already does that.

  7. completely different on Why Movies Are Not Exactly Like Music · · Score: 1

Movies and music are two very completely different things, as different as books and music. You listen to music, when you're done listening, you can keep listening to it. You keep the cd in your in your car so you can listen to it on your way to work. You keep a copy at home so you can listen to it when you're relaxing after a long drive. You keep a copy on your mp3 player so you can listen to it while jogging. You keep a copy at work so you can listen to it while slaving. You got a party, you put on your music. Next week you got a party, you can put on the same music.

Not so with movies. You watch a movie, you're pretty much done. You can't invite a bunch of people to have a good time and watch a movie, then invite them again next week to have a good time and watch the same movie. You can't watch movie at work, you can't watch movie while driving. Most Hollywood movies are so bad you can barely stand to watch it in the first place, you don't want to sit through that again. If you really liked it, maybe you might be able to stand watching it again just once more to see if you missed any parts.

Buying movies is a pointless endeavor. This is just my opinion, maybe I'm wrong, maybe people like watching the same movie over and over again.

I like it a lot: "leave the industry" is a very good advice, they should follow their own advice.

They already made huge profits and continue to make huge profits despite worldwide recession. Over the past few decades the copyright law has been assaulted repeatedly for their sake and we have to endure a nearly infinite copyright term, along with DMCA, DRM and other bullshit just for their sake. If they feel their business is still being treated unfairly and they can't make enough profits to continue then they should leave the industry. The door is wide open, the message is crystal clear: "by all means please feel free to GTFO anytime you like."

They will not be missed: the void they create would be filled instantly by more creators who don't have such draconian views of content control, ie. people who are out to make art, not a quick buck.

Yea... they think they hate Windows, until it's time to do real work: that's when you see all Apple owners resort to running Windows on their super expensive Apple computers. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Apples are only good for dicking around and useless for actual work... they say it.

It really doesn't make sense that Apple can legally prevent anyone from running Apple OS on a different hardware than what it was intended for. It would be like saying the music cd's you buy from walmart can only be played in your car's cd player, you are not allowed to play them on your home cd player. That makes no sense. You bought it, you can run it on whatever device can run it.

You can wander off, and come back to find:
Thank you for watching the advertisement, please enter the advertised product's name to continue.

On a bigger scale, does it bother anyone else that we live in a world where we pay for things by watching advertisements? The advertisers then charge us extra money for the products they're selling so they can pay for the advertisements, which in turn take up our time. So in a way these advertisements cost us double:
    1. we spend the time to watch them
    2. we collectively endure the cost of producing and distributing these advertisements
... and we don't enjoy either part!
So, what is the purpose of an advertisement? If a new product is coming out, we can find out on the review sites to figure out what sucks and what rocks. Maybe the advertisement's purpose is to appeal to your weaknesses and make you get a product without looking at the reviews. In my experience I have discovered that usually the crappiest products/services are the ones with the heaviest advertising and the good ones are busy doing real work instead of wasting time/money on advertisements.
I think advertisements have gone too far, and advertising is a drain on the resources of a world with finite resources.
How about they don't waste? Don't waste time making the ad, don't waste money airing the ad, don't waste my time making me watch a stupid ad. Invest money in making a better product that you genuinely care about instead of trying to convince people to buy your tripe.

  17. Re:Carmakers lie on Toyotas Suddenly Accelerate; Owners Up In Arms · · Score: 1

BMW insists there's nothing wrong with their electronics even though every single one of their cars indicates 4-6 MPH over true speed.

So when the car is stationary with true speed of 0 MPH, the indicator is indicating 4 MPH?? That seems highly unlikely. More likely you probably mean it's a percentage over the actual speed, that would make sense, and here's why:
Look at tread first: Suppose your tires are exactly 18" diameter + tread... minimum legal tread limit is 2/32", tires normally come with 11/32" of tread. So, simply running low on tread will shrink the tire by 9/32", and cause the car to read higher speed limit by a whopping 1.5% ... but wait, there's more!
Did you ever notice tires inflate and deflate? If you over inflate the tire, you could get it to swell up by almost half an inch, or maybe more, so half inch of difference on 18" tire is about 3%... combine the two and you get about 4.5%. But wait, there's more!
The metal rim also expands and shrinks slightly with temperature! This is not going to make as much of a difference as the other two, but you still have to factor it into the equation.

You can't have a speedometer that's showing less speed than actual speed because that would be illegal (illegal to drive a car on public roads without a speedometer that shows actual speed at the least). That explains why speedometers on all cars almost always read higher than actual speed, because they simply can't be allowed to go under the actual speed, and there are lots of factors involved.

Now, BMW being a big company and all could come up with a way of calibrating the speedometer with the GPS. Unfortunately, as easy as it would be for a dick like me to duct tape a system that can do that, for a big company like BMW there would be millions of dollars worth of R&D, testing, crash testing, fool proofing etc to go through... I don't think you'll see GPS synchronized speedometers anytime soon.

this is a case of deliberately disabling a working feature for the express purpose of forcing you to buy their hardware over another's.

You have an excellent point. The idea of adding limits to an OS like this is very anti-competitive. I feel the need to further illustrate the point.

If Microsoft made a deal with Dell and made Windows run exclusively on Dell brand hardware deliberately, there would be a massive uproar of epic proportions from end users as well as other hardware manufacturers. No amount of EULA weaseling can justify the artificial monopoly Microsoft is creating for Dell. I'm sure everyone would agree this would be very anti-competitive.

Now, the plot thickens: suppose Microsoft bought Dell and became known as MicroDell. Would MicroDell suddenly have a justification to make Windows run exclusively on MicroDell computers? No, it's the same situation as before and it's just plain anti-competitive. -- This is exactly what Apple is doing: Apple is making Apple OS run exclusively on Apple computers to drive out competing hardware manufacturers.
