I looks like a great way to store MP3 files but can you rip DVDs to the HD and then play em right off the HD? you probably can't rip them on the player itself.
in theory, if you could rip them on the player, then you have to go through the painful task of transcoding them from mpeg2 to mpeg4. on my p3-800, it takes about 7 or 8 hours to transcode a dvd to divx. (i'm a backup-concious consumer, mind you.)
so it'd take a helluvalong time to rip them.
How many DVDs will fit on a 30 GB HD? dvds, or divxes? each side of a single-layered dvd can hold about 4.7 gigs of info, iirc, so probably aruond 6 dvds will fit on that 30 gig drive. however, if you rip/transcode the mpeg2 data to mpeg4 (divx), (and target the resulting file at around 700mb), you can stuff approx. 42 movies on said drive. your mileage may vary, depending at what quality the divxes are encoded at.
back at my old office, we had satellite internet through starband. we had to install some retarded client software as well just to be able to use the damn thing.
note: satellite sucks ass. too expensive, bitch to configure, and infinitely shitty pings. (i couldn't ping google in under 800ms.)
for a mindless linux-router/firewall setup, try ipcop. it takes about 15 minutes to configure, and lets you do everything from dyndns updater, DMZ pinholes, detailed logging, traffic graphs, and other goodies.
do NOT get starband. i had it at an office it used to work at, and it was terrible. i couldn't ping google in under 800ms, and when i did, it average at about 25% packet loss.
i've got 5 80mm fans, 1 120mm, gorb, and blorb in my system. even when i have all the fans running on 5volts, it sounds like a fucking 747 is idling under my desk.
i have the worlds best gear grip: a large timbuk2 bag. it fits everything except my case and monitor, and is unlike the gear grip, is actually useful for other things.
i dunno if i agree with this or not, but i have an interesting story regarding windows shares: i met my girlfriend through one.
first off, i am a college student. my best friend lives in a dorm different from me, but we manage. one day i showed him how to poke around the local windows network and get into people's mp3s/pr0n/movies. he thought this was insanely cool.
one day, he left me a message saying that he had gotten into some girl's share, and she had her whole hard drive shared up. rather than fuck her over by nuking a few choice files, he found her AOL IM id in/windows/aim95/usernamexxx. he added her to his list, and told her that her whole computer was shared and anyone had access to it, but he didn't know how to get rid of the sharing.
he called me over to her place, she and i finally met, and i showed her how to disable sharing.
look, i hate to bring my musical prejudices into this, but metallica sucks, and the fact that they are going after little kids even lowers them on my scale. its bullshit. if all they are after is more money (wouldn't surprise me), then maybe they should (*gasp*) get back in the studio and release anotehr cd.

why don't you just setup a firewall or router of some sort? i'd have to assume calling them to change MACs is a pain in the ass...
everyone knows that everything2.com is the best blog site in existence...
you mean people actually /use/ CDRW discs?
be sure to check out the pearl street mall. pretty jacked-up place, but cool nonetheless.
best keyboard ever: microsoft natural keyboard pro
best keylayout ever: sun type6
now if only someone would switch the control and capslock keys on my natural, i'd be happy.
yes, but it doesn't make browsing websites any easier, for many of the images timeout...

i've used:
greek mythology (zeus, aphrodite, hades, etc)
DBZ characters (goku, gohan, vegeta, etc)
beastie boys song names (paulrevere, grasshopperunit, professorbooty, etc)
xp is built on 2k. wasnt having an ACPI compliant motherboard part of 2k's system requirements?
what a fucking terrible show...

wow, that really fucking sucks.
damn recession...
only the human species is stupid enough to do something this terrible to members of the same species. i, for one, am embarassed to be human.
mmm, usb 2.0... now if only my devices supported it...
didnt windows 95 come out 6 years ago today?
am i the only one who finds this article to be extremely stupid and not funny?
gah, time for a new processor in the lunix box. it shouldnt take 34 minutes to compile on a 262mhz proc, but it does...

what do these camcorders run? and does anyone else kinda think that 20 minutes per md is a little skimpy? what is the price per minute of recording?
